Sharp Ends 7"A: Crack Trap
B: Loaded Hearts
Comes with Download Code!
www.myspace.com/sharpendsFresh off their debut on Chicago's Hozac Records, Sharp Ends deliver their 2nd of three 7"s coming out in Fall 2009 (with each single decreasing in availability). For this one, Sharp Ends combine their early Joy Division vibe with more of a pop sensibility on the b-side,
Loaded Hearts, though the killer here is
Crack Trap, which has one of the catchiest guitar hooks we've heard in some time. Essential.
The Moby Dicks 7"A1: Ballad of The Red Dog
A2: Fuck Off Baby
B1: Mike Molloy
B2: Ogo Pogo (Hubble Bubble Cover... kind of)
Comes with Download Code
www.myspace.com/themobydicksandstuff%E2%80%9DThe Moby Dicks are a three piece (bass/guitar and two super shitty tom drums duct taped together) featuring two current members of Myelin Sheaths (HoZac single coming soon!) and two past members of Endangered Ape (RIP).
I wont hesitate to say that this 7" has it all - songs about a rad French-Canadian Hot Dog joint in the heart of the Canadian Bible-Belt ("Ballad of the Red Dog"), girls ("Fuck Off Baby" and "Mike Molloy" - a song named after the proprietor of the local record shoppe, but actually about girls) and a mythical Lake Monster ("Ogo Pogo", which is actually a cover of Hubble Bubble's "Pogo Pogo" with the words changed around). Fans of Romance Novels, Nobunny, Hunx, Personal and the Pizzas will love this.
Also available in limited qualities (first come first serve here... I think we have like 20 of each left?)
The Ostrich - Mt. Fuji in Red 7" EPA1: Mt. Fuji in Red
A2: Clean Room
B1: Rabies
B2: Braindrain
200 copies
www.myspace.com/theostrichIn mid-2008, at the top of their game and at the height of their popularity, The Ostrich broke up. In their wake, they left two 7" undistributed singles that they sold out (more or less) locally. The city of Calgary wanted to mark the breakup of The Ostrich with a municipal holiday (Ostrich Day), but the guys felt weird about it and let The Ostrich fade away into oblivion. Which is a shame, because the band (and especially their singles) are really, really good. Organ fuelled, post-punk jams with note-perfect production and a heavy dose of weird thrown in for good measure.
After the demise of The Ostrich, enigmatic front-man Chris Zaijko and drummer Mike Bressanutti went on to form
Sharp Ends to great success (selling out their debut show at Broken City in Calgary with people eager to find out if Sharp Ends could live up to The Ostrich's legacy). Needless to say, the rest is history.
We were lucky enough to find two boxes of Mt. Fuji in Red (the 2nd 7", and my favourite of the two - "Rabies" alone is worth the price of admission!), and have about 30 left, so act quickly.
Moby Dicks CDRTour CDR (and companion piece to the Myelin Sheaths CDR), which we have a few copies remaining. This CDR was meant as a stop-gap until the 7" was ready, and features 4 songs from the 7" and 4 otherwise unreleased gems. Wheras the 7" displays the bubble-gum garage sensibilities, songs like "Always Be Around" and "Talk Money" have an almost MC5 meets 13th Floor Elevators vibe. Worth it for "Whiskey and Palm Trees" alone.
Myelin Sheaths CDR
This CDR features songs that will appear on Myelin Sheaths singles for HoZac and Bachelor records (as well as some songs that are on this and nothing else). This CDR has been somewhat of a sensation for us (since the Weird Canada review, we've sold out of most of these already). Nonetheless, we love this one, and think you will too. Still a few of the second (and final) press.
