^ what's the art?
That is a sign taken from a Red Hook institution that I've long been obsessed with. Russo Notary Pubic/Realty on Smith and 9th.
Under the turntable are just Yazoo/Mamlish/Herwin and John Fahey records. Not shown are compilations of any sort, and soul, reggae, Billy Childish/related and others. Plus the 200 or so I keep at work for listening.
i'll give you 45 dollars for that copy of liquid swords
$45? Seriously? I'm interested.
YES!!! Russo Notary looks like a building you'd float by in a scene from Deliverance or something.
It's like someone puked up folk art all over the front of a shabby vinyl sided 2 story row house.
Russo Notary (and some other "business" too right? Like they claim to be a realtor or something.) How about a remake of Deliverance but set along the Gowanus canal?
I actually recorded a bunch of songs with the Electric Shadows in a studio right next door to Russo Notary. Some of the unsavories that hang out on that strip could fit into an urbanized remake of the movie.
There is/was also a squat right near the canal called the Batcave with a bunch of crusty kids. I used to always see them on the train with garbage bags full of bagels.
I actually just moved into this neighborhood two weeks ago. There are some characters, but it's a'ight. My two block radius is a Little Little Italy, with a group of dudes walking back and forth bewteen their club "The Glory Social Club" (tough not to refer to it as the "Glory Hole") and the Canal Bar. Go Gowanus.
Bat Cave is no more by the way.
