Fugazi, August 21, 1993, Metropol, Pittsburgh. I had just turned 16. They were on tour for In On the Kill Taker and opened with "Facet Squared" (still one of my favorite songs by them), which also opens the album. I remember standing next to a wire cage kind of thing off to the side of the stage. And, if you'll recall, "Facet Squared" starts with a little bit of feedback guitar scratch, then a sort of solo distorted riff, and then everything kind of comes crashing down--vocals, drums, bass, etc. I could feel it coming and the second the whole band hit and Ian Mackye started singing, the place exploded. I went flying into the cage, which almost toppled over, and I can still remember thinking, "This is incredible. Should I be scared? Fuck it." That was the moment.

Cave is a child smearing his shit on the wall, asking everyone if it looks like a Van Gogh.  And somewhere in there, he's getting tailored for a suit..."

You should have ended it here.

Dark Blue - 2pm show at Rough Trade in Brooklyn-

Antagonist front person works when you're playing in an aggressive Scientists sounding punk band, but when you're fronting a band that sounds like the b-sides from "Out of Tim", you just seem like a prima donna.  I like the Dark Blue songs online, but as soon as my wife looked at me with a smirk and said "this sounds like REM" I just couldn't unhear it.  My takeaway:  being in an indie rock band and being an asshole to people that decided to come see your band play on a Sunday afternoon isn't cute or punk, it just means you're kind of a dick.

Why so hurt?  Did you just come from Brunch?  Is stage banter that is anything but praise for the audience considered being an asshole where you come from?  What REM records do you own and can you explain how you think the two bands sound anything alike?  "Out of Tim"? Is that is when stores are out of that shitty Replacements record?

Here's my take:  The bigger room provided the first time seeing Dark Blue where Sharkey's guitar tone wasn't actually painful.  Who knows, maybe folks not as deaf as me thought it was.  They were tight but the playing was a bit more relaxed than the Death By Audio set from last month.  No coats were worn on stage by any member of the band during this set.  Sharkey had a few comments about ebola, brunch, and white privilege where he singled out a guy in the audience.  Hard to see it as anything but reality based jokes of the lightest variety, but maybe you are more sensitive than I am.  The more I see them the more the songs get stuck in my head.  I appreciate their unwavering dedication to Mid-tempo songs.
I also suggested some theatrical stage props for Sharkey.  He's such a fan of the kick while playing that I suggested he get a door frame with a door that he could kick open a few times every set. He wasn't opposed to it.

I like the single. I haven't seen them live, but the dude's stage banter has always generally made me chuckle (if occasionally wince), but I can't picture how this band could possibly sound like REM, at least based on what I've heard.

Bono did get interviewed by Don Howland once. It was like Mailer and Cavett.

Where can one find this?

I seem to recall the general consensus around here regarding Nick Cave is that he's NPR rock now. Maybe so, but this is pretty intense.

Ballroom - I haven't gotten my shit together to see them live, but the three songs linked to in the

Dave check out their live WFMU set for an approximation.

I find this band less interesting the older I get.

I feel just the opposite, and they were possibly my favorite band for most of high school and college. They're one of the few bands from the "indie rock explosion" of my youth (early-to-mid '90s) that I don't think will ever sound dated (especially on Goat and Liar). Plus, they're, like, super tight, dudes!

What's good and where ? Too busy to look at those fucking lists too closely. I saw Hank Wood was playing somewhere. Protomartyr and OBN IIIs as well. What am I missing?

Who cares, though, really...

I'm liking that Golden Pelicans record. Vocal hooks, lyrics, and vocals in general are what make it for me.

Social Distortion is not getting ragged on a little too hard.

This.  I have ignored them since seeing Another State of Mind as a teen.  I figured I didn't need to worry about that dude or his music ever.  The only time I had to see them was on that Neil Young tour where Sonic Youth and Social D opened.  They sucked.
Fucking Sonic Youth. Talentless sycophants. I had no idea they leeched their way on to a Neil Young tour but it comes as no surprise. It's so them isn't it.

For what it's worth, Neil Young has stated in interviews that he thinks "Expressway to Yr Skull" is a guitar anthem. I'm pretty sure he asked them to be on that tour. Could be wrong.

overexposed to:
The Sonics

That shit is so elemental to me I can't imagine getting sick of it. Even when I hear them in a commercial, I'm like, "Cool, the Sonics." I hope "Boss Hoss" gets played in the next True Detective.

Ugh. Very sad. She certainly battled her illness hard.

The Replacements.

This reunion business confirmed it for me. I'll keep the records, but I can't stomach them anymore. I'm not sure if it's either of the reasons above exactly, but I'm done.
