Non-Music Shit / Re: Record Store Day 2011

My friend's record store had their best day of retail sales (in their 30 years of existence) on Saturday.

Bon's & the Tempelton suck ... S2 & the Nice (aside from the Shelley Duvall-looking waitress that forgets you're there) have been pretty good to me when I've been there.

I prefer to head west & eat at the Zen Cafe w/ the Goretex-yuppies ... usually at breakfast time I'm not in a state too fuck around with questionable food.

Nothing beats the Douglas Fir in Portland or the Cyclops in Seattle tho.

Are we talking about the little guy that used to bus tables at the Cobalt dressed in drag?

some of those stores deserved to be closed.

Yeah, it might've conjured up a bit more sympathy by focusing on the Ma'n'Pa shops rather than showing a bunch of Tower Records or crappy 'used CD'-type places.

Of course any decent person would agree to it - yes, you'd look like quite the asshole if the show didn't go on otherwise ... at least ask well ahead of time, offer to help load gear, buy some beer, etc ... I've seen even that not done.

It's by far more of an asshole maneuver if someone doesn't want to do any of the basic work ... what if every band on your bill did that too?

In years of sneaking bands up across the border to Vancouver, lending a backline (& sometimes guitars) was a necessity ... the payback was usually any bands in Seattle or Portland would return the favor.

What I can't get over is how many local bands around here ask to to borrow gear - it's one thing if you have some show w/ a bunch of bands & need a quick turnover, but it's more often a case of sheer laziness.

And I love it when they show up & ask an hour or two before they're supposed to go on, making you the asshole if you didn't agree to it ...

Just go to an auto wreckers & pick one up ... would prob cast less than $50. Installing it is all of two bolts & one simple electrical connection (plug) ... getting the tools in to access it is usually the biggest problem, but you can do it!

It does sound like the alternator ... maybe get it tested/confirmed at a shop though.

He went from being the inimitable frontman of one of my favorite bands to being the Vancouver 'Downtown Eastside' poster boy ... you can probably still find him drinking in any one of the dive bars down there any given day.

Good on ya for writing that ... I'll bet there's a whole department that handles that kind of stuff that will actual be concerned ... (btw: one of my best friends from high school opened the first two Papa Murphy's on Vancouver Island ... I'm forwarding that to him) ...

I too cannot let sleeping dog lie on shit like this ... & never underestimate the power of a well-written letter. At one point I was supposed to have my driver's license suspended for a year, but I wrote them a well-worded rebuttal & got out of it ... whereas my dumb-ass friend was in the same situation got his suspended.

Things sounds like an urban legentd, but I almost puked when I read it.

And hear I was gonna pipe in w/ an anecdote about Vancouver's overpriced-yet-humongous-bed-bug-infested situation, but I'll take a pass.
