Non-Music Shit / Re: 5 best/5 worst movies of the year?
« on: December 20, 2006, 03:32:03 PM »
This would probably go to most people's worst-list, but I thought Brown Bunny was really good. I also liked the new movie by Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki called Laitakaupungin Valot. Can't remember anything else at the moment, I guess I've been watching a lot of old movies this year.

Good Girls Gone Bad comp on ACE. Sparkle Moore tracks rule, but there's unfortunately lot of filler included too. Someone (Norton?) should give her tracks the 7" treatment they deserve.

Used Records For Sale/Auctions/Wantlists / Re: wanna buy new vinyl

SDZ (http://sdz.free.fr/) might still have copies of Cheveu's Clara Venus 7". When I ordered my copy from them it was about 6€ (postage to Finland included)! It's a killer, you don't want to miss out on it.

Check www.recordsbymail.com and search by the label name.  They have a bunch of Arhoolie lp's in stock. The prices there aren't allways the cheapest, but they are really reliable as far as grading and packing of records etc. goes.  I'd recommend checking out both Mississippi Delta Blues lp's, they are great (especially the Joe Callicott tracks on vol. 2). I got my copy of the Rev. Overstreet LP from GEMM. Don't remember how much I paid for it though, probably around $30.

This will cause tremendous agony among record collectors when they're trying to decipher whether their copy is one of the first hundred or not.

Bummer. I'm not 100% in to their records, but live they were amazing.

Started this morning with Howlin' Wolf's Memphis Days cd's on Bear Family. These Sam Phillips produced tracks may well be my favorite of Wolf's output. He's mean and nasty and Willie Johnson's guitar sound is at times unbelievably savage.  Awesome stuff!

My Howlin' Wolf session was interrupted when the Nothing People 7"  suddenly dropped out of my mail box. And yes, it's really really good. One of the best 7"s this year (and this has actually turned out to be a pretty good year as far as singles goes).

Music Shit / Re: Do the Cheater Slicks play out much these days?
« on: November 24, 2006, 06:59:14 AM »
There was some discussion a while back on Goner board about Slicks touring Europe after the new record comes out.  They probably won't come to Finland, but if they'll play in Sweden I'll be rushing to the boat to Stockholm. CS are on top of the list of the bands I'd like to witness live.

Music Shit / Re: what is the most you've ever paid for a record?

Somewhere between $40-$50 (Patton's - Founder of the Delta Blues, Can's Tago Mago, Beefheart's Trout Mask etc). I rarely regret buying records I have payed a lot of money for, since they usually are records I have already heard, the ones I regret buying are modern garage singles, because nine of ten are either mediocre or total garbage (although every once in a while there's something like Cheveu's Clara Venus, that makes buying all those shitty 7"s seem worthwhile).

Still on the same track - Gibson Bros, Fall and Cheater Slicks. Just listened to Forgive Thee this morning and I have to say that Dignity And Grace is one of their best songs ever.

hey everybody, thanks for all the SWELL MAPS info...i think you made the point that those records are worth my money!!!!

Now I think I'm going to listen to some Swell Maps when I get home.

Listened to the Cheater Slicks' Forgive Thee to and from work today.  Such a great album, but I'm of the opinion that the Slicks can do no wrong.

I've been listening that record a lot too lately, it's really really good (although Whiskey and Refried Dreams would be the ones I'd first be saving from the fire if it would come to that). Funny thing is that whenever I hear You'll Be Glad When I'm Gone Knockin' On Heaven's Door starts playing in my head.

Does anyone know why they parted ways with In The Red?

I've been wondering about that too. It's sort of a bummer, since Cheater Slicks somehow were the essence of ITR "sound", at least to me.

Been listening  a LOT of Fall lately. Somehow they (like the Slicks) fit well to this time of the year when days are filled with wet snow, rain and fog and sun goes down at 4.30. PM.

I emailed them some time ago about some other records and they never got back to me.  I'm probably gonna turn to Klang und Kleid on this one.

They should throw a party when the LP comes out and sell em to the people that show up.  Hell, I bet people would be coming from all over the globe to that event.  Then they could feel their true worth, for once.

If you wanna buy me plane tickets from Finland to the gig location I'm all for it!

Music Shit / Re: Jazzactuel Box Set

Thank you all (and thanks Luke). I think I'm gonna get this as soon as I have some money to spend.

Where could this box set be acquired?

Forced Exposure has it (the vinyl version) for $54 but I think I saw it somewhere for about $10 less.
