this ambiguity and uncertain mood gives the album its immense power, and its fascinating mystique.

review of wonderfuls up at Volcanic Tongue:

Much-anticipated full-length vinyl LP from this fantastic Australian underground group: no one does the sound of lonely and of near total emotional dislocation like Wonderfuls and their approach has developed from crude jack-off garage blues to a majestically bleak and beautiful amalgam of Buckley/Underwood style elegiac folk/junk, the dreamtime post-Velvets heartbreak of prime Felt and the most broken of the Gun Club sides. Only Shadows Now is their greatest side to date, with black, minor key ballads cut with peaking slide/e-bow guitar solos straight out of Mother Juno, tumbling slow-motion chord patterns and that singing-while-talking style perfected by Lawrence. A classic late-night spin and one of the most beautifully lonely and baroquely beautiful acid folk albums of the year. Highly recommended.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Terrorist attack in Paris
« on: January 10, 2015, 08:35:22 AM »
And nobody is supporting the attackers. Nobody.

Someone of us are just asking Europeans to stop being babies about it. This is absolutely not a freedom of speech issue.

Terrorism is what happens when you have a toxic society. It's the same over here and I say the same shit to US citizens who whine when shit like the Boston Marathon bombing happens.

...and if this strengthens the fascist right wing in France, it means that many people were just sitting on the fence waiting for a reason to hop over. I don't think that the riots in Ferguson caused people across the US to become racist, it just gave them an excuse to express their racist outrage. Fuck those people, and fuck those people who defend the racist drivel that newspaper published.

Again, where were these people when the gov't of Mexico executed 40+ students for expressing themselves?

exactly.
furthermore, what are the real causes of this attack ?
that the french government has constantly established laws to restrict the freedom of arabs, that the french government has actively promoted an islamophobic anti-arab and generally xenophobic ambience in this country, that the french government is heavily involved in colonial and imperialistic wars across the world, that the french government has protected the killing of 2000 palestinians last year, etc. while devoting most of its time, effort and money to yielding its powers to the entrepreneurs and generally savaging and dividing the working class here

Urgh. Not looking forward to the spectacle of hordes of soft-left 'liberals' clamouring over themselves to write nonsense whilst declaring themselves Defenders of Free Speech, somehow positing it as a moral duty to print offensive, racist things just to assert the right to do so. Free speech that's just an intensification of the language of social oppression, that's threatened only by those it oppresses, isn't freedom.

I wonder how many of these principled defenders of freedom also denounced France for banning the veil in 2010 and for banning Pro-Palestinian rallies this summer? Or for the very real erosion of the right to protest here in the UK?

Free speech is under attack, but not by criminals with guns. The idea that terrorism is in any way an existential threat to our rights or freedoms as citizens is moronic beyond belief, but will no doubt be spouted by journalists and politicians across the news tonight.

very true

after Salty Town, their self-released debut masterpiece, here comes the new Lp by Brisbane's Wonderfuls:

Only shadows Now - Robert delivers 10 confessionals that drift around tragedies, hopelessness, failed systems, nonconformity and physical/psychological experiences. Set to the minimalist sparse compositions of Dan McGirr (guitar) and Natasha Buchanan (synth, voice) whose guitar and synthesizer lines entwine around the bleak lyrics and help paint Robert?s world of despair and loneliness. Only more downer, time hasn?t healed the wounds, they?ve only become deeper.

Wonderfuls make sombre, depression ridden tunes of nostalgic reflection. The band is a duo comprised of Brisbane visual artist and noted wastoid Bobby Bot on vocals, and his Gold Coast based cousin Danny McGirr on guitar. They?ve been playing under the name Wonderfuls since 2004 yet have rarely played live, but when they do it has always been something of a special event. Why? Because the Wonderfuls express deeply personal issues like mental illness and social isolation better and with more sincerity than any other band you will hear in our fine tropical city. - Matt Kennedy (Kitchen's floor)

In some ways, Wonderfuls is a gruellingly masculine piece of work. Masculine because it?s about not being a man: it?s about not being strong, not being dependable and steadfast. It?s the horror of knowing that life has disallowed it. - Shaun Prescott (Crawlspace)

RECOMMENDED
Harrowing, shivery Sandoval/Roback style romantic apocalypse from this Australian duo, last heard leading off the Warm Cupboard comp on Albert’s Basement. Vocalist Elizabeth Downey coos away at these tales of hurt and longing in eternal twilight, the sun peaking down below the horizon after it’s dried up the land below until it’s unfit for use. Dan Hawkins supports on bass, organ and a harmonium sounding instrument, creating a hellscape over which the beauty above glances and glides. It’s a strong mix of a contemporary sound offset in traces of the avant-garde, and though the comparisons to Mazzy Star and Opal are strong, they don’t detract from what this duo has to offer. Good last meal/final snack soundtrack for when the world seems just that grim. (http://bruit-direct.org)
