Is Hocus Pocus on any other release besides this tape? I've seen him play that song live a couple times and I like it a lot.

I took a seed out of a habanero in April and stuck it in some soil in my windowsill just to see if it would grow. It grew really well, and I've got two peppers that are just about to ripen. The plant just keeps getting bigger too. Can't wait to make some salsa or jerk chicken with them.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is always really fun. I'm planning on going to both Saturday and Sunday. And the best part is that it's free! Schedule here:

I still don't think I've heard a correct answer for what that brown stuff is. I know that there is fish sauce somewhere on the sandwich, probably mixed into the spread, but there is no way that spread is pure fish sauce.

Could it be this stuff?

I get Bahn Mi at Cafe Dolci in SF every once in a while and this is what the bottle looks like. My coworkers and I were trying to figure it out one day.

Tai Chi (Polk between B'way and Pacific)- Probably my favorite non-dim sum Chinese place in SF. Pretty cheap and way better than 99% of the places in Chinatown, Clement, or in the Sunset. Worth it just for their big-ass egg roll and wor wonton soup, but there are dozens of great things on the menu.

Thanks for the tip!  I went today and tried egg rolls and Wor Won Ton as advised.  I'll definitely be back.  I'd always assumed anything on Polk past California was going to cost me more than it was worth, but I'm obviously going to have to rethink things.

Tai Chi is awesome. I've been eating leftovers for the last two nights. It's right by my place, and yeah, there really are a lot of good places around there. Little Thai at the end of the block is really good too, and Tajine has just opened back up in a new location on Van Ness and Pacific. I also really like Peter D's for breakfast on Van Ness and Broadway. It's a cool little diner with a bunch of old ladies working there.

Also: Polk Street Station.  If you want some biscuits and gravy (or chicken fried steak) that's the place.
It's total divey diner food. Love it!

This place closed not too long ago. Bummer.

anybody got leads on the cheap sushi? i remember the spot at california and polk being pretty cheap, or maybe it just seemed that way because id always be in there drunk as fuck late night

I think you're thinking about Nara at California and Polk. It's really good and cheap- a regular visit sort of place for me and my lady.

Red Box Sushi on Eddy is also really good, but has uneven hours.

Down the street from Nara, we also just tried Chai Yo for Thai food, and it beats Little Thai for Thai food in that area.

For breakfast, there is an amazing place allllllll the way out on Lombard called Home Plate. They bake their own pastry out there, and you can see what German tourists are wearing this season UP CLOSE. Medium-level prices, and how often does anyone go out to outer Lombard anyway?

Oh man, I love Home Plate! Those scones they give you are the best. I would have to call this my favorite breakfast spot in the city.

And oh yeah, Mi Lindo Yucatan on Valencia St. (across from Little Star) is awesome Yucatan food. Super cheap and delicious, and they have the spiciest salsa I have ever eaten at a restaurant.
