in hindsight i think nirvana owes a lot to husker du; strange there aren't any husker du records on the list.

I totally second the Great Unwashed.

I'd love a vinyl copy of Peter Ivers 'Knights of the Blue Communion'.

Samoans are timeless - I get dumber the older I get, and music like that makes more sense to me.

All the originally released Pop Group stuff is owned by Warner UK. They wouldn't even license ONE song for a CD compilation to me.

Hi Dan!

Did they completely refuse to, or just price it so high that it wasn't affordable? Just curious cause I remember hearing years ago about someone wanting to reissue the second Slits album and CBS (or whomever it was) wanted an insane amount of money for the rights ... though I think it's been subsequently reissued so someone musta forked out for it.

Sure, re: backline - in Japan, apparently every club has really pro gear that's permanently there, and it's well maintained by the club.  Of course shows cost $40.

If you were to skim a bit from the door towards a maintenance fee that would take care of the repair problem, but then we're back to bands not making as much money.  I've not been to UK shows where the club provides a full backline - usually the promoter just loans his own amp, and borrows one or two from a friend.  This obviously has it's advantages and disadvantages; it gives basement shows a different dynamic (though we don't have basement shows here).

In general I've found that it's easier to find venus in the UK - there are no shortages of pubs or art spaces or jazzy coffeehouses.  In Pittsburgh it seemed like there was always a new crisis about nowhere to have diy/indie/punk shows, since there were usually only 2 or 3 places that were constantly under threat.  I get the feeling it's way better now and no one needs to worry about that anymore, but there still aren't like 50 different venues to put on gigs.

Glasgow is pretty typical of the UK i guess.  If it's a noise/drone show you'll get the same 20 people to all of them; if its a punk show there is absolutely no crossover.  If someone like Pink Reason or Home Blitz played here (which would be AWESOME) I have absolutely no idea what sort of crowd it would draw.  But regardless, you would still get paid ?50-100, sleep on a floor, and have to buy your own beer and food.  I imagine if you're a 'bigger' act you could make ?150 but to make more than that you'd probably be getting into booking agent territory.

Continental Europe is where it's at ... you always get money and food and alcohol and awesome hospitality.  The one advantage the UK has over the US is that usually a backline is provided (amps/drums) or at least it can be without it seeming weird.  It's not uncommon at all for bands to tour on the trains or buses.  However you stlll always have to pay a rental fee to the bar/venue to book a gig, and sometimes a sound guy on top of that... on the continent I think it's more common for the space to be free, since the bar makes a shitload from the alcohol sales anyway ....

i just put out an LP for the first time in 3 years and i've actually been in shock about how much it costs to ship records now.  we need to come up with some sort of 'underground railroad' or something.

hmmm, speaking as a pittsburgher, i'm not totally surprised.  i never really thought of it as polluted, but maybe in US terms ... but you should go to bombay if you wanna experience POLLUTION.  like, your clothes get dirty and apparently breathing the air is equivalent to smoking several packs of cigarettes per day.

Behind the Curtain is totally amazing.  i probably listen to it more than the studio albums now, but maybe that's because i've jammed the studio albums a zillion times now.  another totally great and inspiring release is Document and Eyewitness which is completely confounding and obtuse.  if you like your art-punk heavy on the art (i do), this is really brilliant.

i must admit i've always been afraid of reunited 80's wire, but that's probably just due to the predjudices of my punk friends at the time.
