Is there or was there an Atlanta show in June? I'm out of town for Real Cool Time.

Most of what I previously wrote is still valid except Full Moon Records closed a while ago before I ever noticed.

If you're staying at Highland Inn, a few things nearby:

The Righteous Room: Long running dive bar less a block away if you need a drink without commuting. Smoky.
Victory Sandwich Bar: Non-dive bar 3-4 blocks away with a few good beers, low end craft cocktails, good food, usually some sort of punk music, and ping pong. Non-smoking.
Highland Row Antiques: Right next to the Inn. Lots of MCM. They have a big basement sale one Saturday a month but I think it's the first Saturday.
Green's: Excellent beer store.
Savi Provisions: Hipster convenience store.
Manuel's Tavern: Old school restaurant and bar updated just enough to stay relevant. Large menu and good beer.

I was there a few weeks ago. I don't know if you already know more or less than I do but here goes:

Grimey's Records: I've been here a few times and it is worth going to but I've never gotten much.
The Groove: I just went there for the first time. The LP selection was pretty bare but they did have a good pile of 1990+ punk-type 7"s.
Fond Object: First time for this place, too. They basically only stock punk-type LPs. The prices are a little higher than I would like but they had a good selection.
Third Man: In case you don't know it's not a true record store. They only have Third Man stuff.
The East Room: I went to a show here and it was a solid venue.
Robert's Western World: If you go to one honky tonk downtown, go here.
Hattie B's: I drove by both locations once each and the line was ridiculous.
The Pharmacy: Probably my favorite restaurant I've been too. Huge portions, tasty food, good prices, good beer, not too crowded, you won't feel too old or unhip.
12 South Taproom: Solid bar food and beer, trendy part of town, can get crowded, you may feel slightly old or unhip.

Music Shit / Re: Grindcore recommendations

Cool. A few bands I hadn't checked out before, cheers. Cloud Rat was a surprise, I hadn't heard them for years, the fast stuff is great, the slower a bit too emo. I've always liked Insect Warfare, Iron Lung and later Assuck. Wormrot I guess could be called 'next level' in terms of the genre and have a lot more metal than I can usually handle but some truly great moments have kept me coming back to them. Palm - My Darkest Friends is also noteworthy.
I don't listen to grindcore but saw Assuck a decent amount of times in Tampa in the 90s and they were awesome.

Pop Punk / Re: Ink & Dagger

I own an Ink & Dagger record cuz it's the split 7" w/ Le Shok and it has the best song Le Shok ever wrote on it. So, there.

Absolutely agree with that being the best Le Shok song.

I was in a band that did a 2 week tour with Ink & Dagger in 1998. Hate them or not, they were a force to be reckoned with live. Not the easiest guys to deal with though.
I'm pretty sure I saw them around then but don't remember anything about it. I never listened to their records.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Ripping from vinyl

I do a fair amount of ripping and I think it sounds really good. I have a mediocre Ion USB turntable but a nice Shure cartridge and I think that makes the difference.

That said, I think what you are asking about, is some records just record with a low level hum in the background and I just don't know why that happens. It doesn't happen much but it does happen.

Nice job with the Don Howland interview.

On a moderately related subject, my copy of Dedicated Fool came with fan mail from the previous owner.

This is among my favorite new records and I don't own any other Lumpy related stuff. I don't think I find them very weird at all. They're pretty solid rock to me.

In my marginally educated opinion Wax Trax has by far the best new section. They order a lot more obscure and smaller press stuff than Twist & Shout. IMO Wax Trax has a fairly weak used section, other than a massive amount of 45s I've never spent much time looking through. Twist & Shout's new section is fairly pedestrian but they have a ton of used LPs.

I just came across THE NINE ELEVENS on YouTube. I don't think they have a bandcamp page. The vocals make me think of the songs Jeff sang for Rat Traps.

Both that Expos book (same author as the TB Rays book I've read) and ABA book look good to me.
