Non-Music Shit / Re: Sports Writing
« on: August 03, 2016, 11:50:52 AM »
Since you're a Floridian, though from a different market, you may enjoy Jonah Keri's The Extra 2%, about the Ivy League/Wall Street influence on the Tampa Bay Rays.

I've never read it but David Halberstam's The Breaks of the Game about the 1979-1980 Portland Trailblazers is supposed to be exceptional. Pretty much everything by him is supposed to be great but I've only read his The Education of a Coach about Bill Belichick.

If you don't know much about sports books, John Feinstein is one of the most prolific book writers out there and what I've read by him is good, but I avoid his Duke/Bobby Knight adulation. Of his I've read Open: Inside the Ropes at Bethpage Black and Next Man Up: A Year Behind the Lines in Today's NFL.

I mostly read football and a few randoms I enjoyed were The GM: A Football life, a Final Season, and a Last Laugh about longtime GM Ernie Accorsi and The Draft about the 2005 draft.

Surprising that Rob specifically calls out the production of "Sea of Blasphemy" as I always thought the recorded version was pretty lackluster compared to the energy they would put into that song live.

Very sad. Romance Novels were definitely one of my favorites from the 2000's.

I took this video of them in April:

Someone else took a better video of them from that same show:

I thought they were great and so did everyone else I talked to that night.

It's 12 studio tracks that pre-date "Yes. No. Shut It". There's quite a bit of overlap, but it's before their sound "changed". More tame / more rawk. Say what you will, but this is the sound that I prefer.
That's exactly how I feel about them.

That record has been hard to find for a long time. I got mine at least 15 years ago and even back then ebay was the only option.

I've only bought 1-2 RSD releases ever and overall could not care less about the event, but was out of town and in a store the Sunday after RSD and half the people that walked in were specifically looking for RSD releases.

I don't know if this is the right forum but I just came across the DLIMC stuff and it is excellent.

It looks like the Highland Inn averages around $75/night so I'll work off that.

Downtown Atlanta has a huge hotel infrastructure for conferences and business meetings that don't get a ton of use on the weekends so they're not too expensive. It looks like you can stay at the Marriott, Hyatt, and Hilton for around $130/night. These are pretty classy big city hotels with multiple restaurants and bars. (The Hilton has a Trader Vic's.) Each hotel has had at least a few movies filmed there over the years.

If you don't care about hanging out downtown and don't want to spend as much, you may try the Ramada Plaza at Capitol Park for $100/night. This is very close to my house. It's kind of isolated and there is absolutely nothing right around here, but you're basically sitting on I-20 and a 3-mile straight shot to East Atlanta Village and the EARL.

I don't know every scuzzy hotel in town to warn people about, but whatever you do, make sure you avoid the Savannah Suites on Pine Street. The Red Roof Inn on Parkway is somewhat transitional now I think but that area has historically been very hoody.

I just randomly came across this and it sounds to me like some of the best new regular-style punk rock I've heard in a while.
