Pop Punk / Re: Records that lost their luster

Stayed at the hotel this was filmed at. The guy who smashed the can into his head at the end of the video showed up and did meth in our bathroom.

True, the ones inspired by Gentlemen Jesse or whatever were dull and shitty; At least the EH clones were colorful ridiculous peacocks (who also were shitty). Plastic Letters forever!!

Wooooah ooooh oh

Can we derail this into a MySpace Power Pop! thread? Where's teenagegurls when you need him..

Loved it, listened to it a bunch, suffered through a horde of imitators with not one of them being worthwhile and completely burnt out.  These things happen.

Aw c'mon, those Exploding Hearts copycat bands were fucking hilarious. The laughs I got out of them were infinitely more worthwhile than any other recent attempts at powerpop I've heard.

I'm sure it's passe around here, but I think the Exploding Hearts have aged well - especially in comparison to their contemporaries. Stumbled upon footage of their last show again recently and it looked / sounded just as good as it did more than a decade ago. I'm sure many of you will disagree, but there hasn't been one single new band in that style who has come even close since.

---

There's a big difference between something losing luster over time and being embarrassed now for liking it in the first place. It's also way too easy to over-analyze and call everything 'corny' (what isn't?) now that we're all such well-seasoned experts who've heard it all before. I'm as jaded as anyone about the current music scene, but it's funny when people start purposely challenging the status quo by going back and tearing apart old records they used to love, as if 'no longer being excited or impressed by anything anymore' somehow validates their status.

'The Ramones are just OK now. Was a huge fan until I turned 35 and realized this stuff is actually pretty childish and repetetive, y'know?'

Got mine last friday and spent most of the weekend glued to this book...I still haven't find a record not listed....

Same here. Can't believe how much is covered! Absolutely insane.

Jeff - it's very comparable to 45 Revs, but includes LP's and also reissues.

Seems to have a much wider scope. I mean, even Pinball Summer soundtrack is in this!

Is that Adam Roth LP reissue still in the works?

How is Roy doing these days - still in Albuquerque? Truly a one of a kind. Miss his rabid enthusiasm, ridiculous / brilliant ideas, and hilarious perspectives on everything. Hope he's doing well.

Good deal! Both Apostrophe records are great.

Buffalo is THAT bad? Niagara Falls? You guys obviously are doing pretty well if these are legitimately the worst places you've been.

...and Gurnee, IL? How is this worse than ANY suburb in the country?

zzzzzzz

I guess.. Everything through 'Indiscreet' is near perfect. Gets uneven after that, but worth investigating through 'Angst In My Pants' (their last solid album?).

Music Shit / Re: KBD era reissue wish list...

I said it earlier in this thread but I think the nasty facts single is one of the best overlooked singles of the era.  Glad to hear people will be able to buy it again

Nothing overlooked here. It's been a punk/power pop fav since its release and hasn't let up. I don't love it, but its popularity is undeniable. This record is usually one of the first people hear when they dip their toes into New Wave era obscurities.

hasn't been on a comp since the 80's and every time I play it out I have a bunch of punks ask me what it is. Maybe it used to be mega popular is it is with your social group or something, but it's not on a kbd/bloodstains.  The only time I remember seeing it referenced was in that "reference of female fronted punk" and I think it was only "drive my car" (the standout obviously).  Their second 7" I think was on that m'lady cassette only comp from a few years back but.... cassette comp....

Well...it's been a KBD 101 band for many years. Obscure to many people in the world, sure, but not obscure to anyone who listens to this sort of music.

NFs were on Back to Front volume 1. This was a pretty influential series, I'd say right after KBD & Bloodstains (and it was compiled by one team), and this volume came out almost 25 years ago. Any band that was on the first volume of one of the big "obscure punk" compilations is pretty well known.

This is a lame thing to "argue" about, for sure. But Nasty Facts are a pretty well-known band in the KBD world.

Yeah - and don't forget the Nasty Facts 7" picture sleeve appears on the back of KBD #1 (even though none of the tracks are included on the actual comp). DOESN'T GET MUCH MORE KBD THAN THAT.

ugh, just listened to (parts of) those tenement songs. i don't know what i was expecting, but what i got was what i should've been expecting. fragments modern machines shrubbers EWWW.

Finally just did the same thing. Maybe they have a really cool light show. They seem to be considered gods in some Milwaukee circles, which makes perfect sense after hearing them. 'Just good rock n roll' is how they've been described to me, but this is closer to what I assume Jimmy Eat sounds like - who I'm sure also uses cool vintage gear and bust out an occasional Black Flag cover. As do the Foo Fighters,  Figgs, and Green Day. Brilliant. I hate this music.

Neither song on the third 45 appears on the LP. Bside is 'Until The Day' and is easily one of the best Key songs. Really good condensed Beatles influenced powerpop. But both sides are great.

And you can get it for around $5 with a sleeve!
