Music Shit / Re: Recent Acquisitions

The non-album 45 might be my favorite Key record.

I think the Wind LP is very solid and consistent throughout.  Excellent record that won me over on first listen.  Only liking 'I Am The Garden' honestly seems a bit random to me.

The Beckies, however... maybe I'll have to revisit that one.  Was happy with it for the $1 I spent on it years ago, but only briefly touches on anything I like, other than one really solid track (maybe two).

The vocal on opening track of the Wind is so turn off, my god, awful. I don't really dig "i am the Garden". "Wonder Track" might be my favorite track at this moment….

I don't think there is a single track i don't like on the Beckies LP. I really like it…Makes me think of something lke Stories would have made a power pop album and i dig Stories so….

I like the goofy vocals in parts of the Wind record, but can see how it'd be off putting to some.  The vocals are one thier strong points for me.  The videos on YouTube are cool too.

Gonna put on that Beckies LP sometime this weekend, as it's been several years since my last listen.

Sundae Time record is pretty good too

LP is pretty cool, but the 'Baby Don't Cry' 45 is great.

Also the Things Fall Apart 'Bye Bye My Rose' 45 is KILLER.  Sounds kinda like Equals doing a Troggs song.

Great song / band.  All four albums are excellent.

Shivvers LP turned out incredible!  I'm blown away by how much clarity the remix brought to the songs.

Necessaries - You Can Borrow My Car 7"- $18ppd

Great powerpopper.  Skip probably still has 50 in his basement so expect a relist soon.

Acme Records in Milwaukee had it for I think $8 on the my last few stops - good chance it's still there.  I'm always surprised at how long good punk / powerpop records stay in the bins around here.

Music Shit / Re: The Go - "Watcha Doin"

It didn't feel like a 'jam' as much as a long / pointless repetition.   As far as I can recall - the only interesting part was that it never ended.  I think some guitar shredding or even a drum solo would have at least stopped me from walking outside.

I have no problem with bands that dress up like the MC5 (or whoever) & use only retro gear.  But it helps if a group of drunk high school kids don't open your show and effortlessly out-jam and out-shred you to the point you literally just look and sound like an cheap, inauthentic 70's tribute act in comparison.  That said - I liked the record at the time and have heard bits & pieces of other recordings since that weren't terrible.

Remember being excited to see these guys in Green Bay.  Think Mystery Girls opened and played one of their more chaotic sets (one of the shows where Jordan jumped off stage and punched somebody in the face mid-song).  The Go came on later with a cliche 70's patchwork-bell-bottoms-side-burns-sunglasses pose and played a really lame / long set, which included a generic 20-minute cover of 'Gloria'.  Granted I was 16 or 17 - but was expecting more MC5 than Black Crows at the time.

That really sucks..  Loved them both times in Milwaukee last year.

Here's the set from one of the shows:

Your Devotion
Don't Do This To Me
Say It Like You Mean It
Animal Attraction
Now And Then
May Day
Too Late
When it Hits
Love Is Like A Bullet
Burned Out Love
Torn In Two
Hangin Around With You
Feel The way
Heaven Help Me
Tomorrow Night
Curiosity
Your Imagination
Hot Mess
I Don't Wanna Hear It
She Satisfies
I Don't Miss You
Hate To Run
Capital Gain
The Things You Do
Summer Rain

Looking at the list, I think 'Heaven Help Me' & 'Hot Mess' were two that I didn't like.  Otherwise I thought they were legitimately great.

EDIT:
Saw the NY setlist and it looked a lot better.  'Okay', 'Boys Don't Lie', 'Wanna Get Lucky'... shit!

Does anyone know who's behind the Life Without Buildings reissue?

I think what's your rupture?

Wrong thread, but: anyone know the status on the Brett Smiley record WYR is supposedly putting out?  It feels like it's been a long time since I heard about it w/ no mention since.

Last time I talked to Mike he gave me the lowdown on this. Milk and Cookies reissue is going to contain like 8 or 10 unreleased studio tracks that were recently unearthed (not sure if there's overlap with it being different versions of previously released songs or if it's all unheard songs). Really looking forward to hearing those recently unearthed songs.

Hope /assume this will include some of those second album demos: 'Rivits By Radio', 'Girls In Gangs', etc.  But a 3xLP?!

Brunchspeak:

"Hella," even if you're from CA, but especially if you're not
Using "epic" to describe a rather mundane occurrence
"Totes" instead of the difficult-to-pronounce "totally"
A Valley-speak inflected "soooooo good"
"Like" as verbal filler
Using "super-" before any word to denote a superlative, as in saying "super-aggro" to describe someone who's very aggressive
Describing a messy social affair or harried work situation as a "shit show"
"Awesome" to describe something fairly common
"BFF"
"Curated" to describe a show, a compilation or anything other than an art exhibit of some sort

An Instagram photo with a girl making a heart-shape with her hands is Brunch.  Pictures of cats are Brunch.  Pictures of dogs are not.  Unless they're Rescue Pit-Bulls and are described as such.  Of if they're really tiny and feeble and have ironic names, or are named after characters from Ayn Rand's catalog.

Upside-down crosses are now brunch.  So's any sort of pagan imagery.  To wit, Death in June.

If you're white and you insist on addressing those with Spanish names in an affected Spanish accent, you are Brunch.

Women who actually refer to themselves as "fag-hags" are Brunch.  Unless they're entirely insane.

Funniest post I've read on here in a long time & totally accurate.

Brunch exists in Milwaukee.  I've witnessed all of it's defining characteristics collectively on multiple occasions at Cafe LuLu, Comet, and Palomino (among others).  Although nowhere near as dense or vibrant, I assume, as Williamsburg or Portland - it definitely has some life here.

Major listen over the past few days has been the Sound's Jeopardy LP.  Great LP -- far better than the first single and subsequent releases.  Manages stark passages but tempers the plodding moments with brilliant hooks and careful melodies.  Borland's vox are strong; his delivery, even stronger.  Such a good record for intoxicated nights alone, especially in this cold-snap we're experiencing right now.

Agree.  Find myself playing this one much more during the winter months for some reason.
