Music Shit / Re: Trash Kit LP

don't know about shops or distros but chicago independent are distributing it. there's a 7" recorded at the same time, also worth getting. plus a split 7" with woolf out next month which can be ordered here.

such a great band. nice to see them feature in a couple of mrr year top tens & they're even better live than on record.

ok, didn't know there was a 12" from '86, i just have the one that came out on demo tapes in maybe '06 or '07.

the chap from a touch of hysteria/ lush/ hard skin was called chris (acland), not john.

the new releases look great. really liked the a touch of hysteria demo 12" that came out a few years back.

trash kit
gummy stumps
woolf have got pretty great in the last few months

by the time i could afford to order the demonstration tapes it'd sold out, but i'm very happy with the everything and more 3cd box set, which is rather snazzy & has twice as many songs. would've probably ended up ordering it anyway, so at least this way i save money.

Some could even argue that Calvin Johnson single handedly started the Olympia indie scene with The International Pop Underground and K Records.
he's the most iconic olympia figure for sure (not counting that cobain fellow) but even he would never claim to have started the scene, let alone single-handedly. john foster was an important inspiration, stella marrs a co-conspirator ... tons of others.

Thanks, I did mention Rough Trade Records, not the shop, so hopefully that'll be ok

ah, righto. this question seems a bit strange, then:
Quote
4. Do you think people starting up independent record shops use the Rough Trade format as an influence?
(wouldn't labels use the format of a label as an influence/  shops use the format of a shop?). but whatever.

mid-80s scritti politti = hit, obvs.

3. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most, how much do you feel Rough Trade Records have influenced the independent music scene in the UK?
if you can edit the survey, it might be good to clarify whether you mean rough trade records (i.e. the label), or the rough trade shops. they're not the same company or even particularly closely related & haven't been for a long time.

i was hoping for more questions, frankly.

probably useful for your research:
-- rob young's rough trade book, which covers the label (published by black dog)
-- paul cox's/ tom fawcett's rough trade zine (reprinted  in '08 or '09 in an issue of artrocker magazine) which covers label & shops.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Best non-music documentaries

man on wire was really great: need to see it again properly on a decent screen, watched it (twice in a row) on a flight.
young @ heart is total feelgood stuff, loved that one.

also:
the times of harvey milk
night mail (gpo film unit classic about the travelling post office)
the london nobody knows (interesting flipside to swinging 60s london)
i for india ('cine-letters' sent between the film maker's father in england & his family back in india from the time he moved here in the mid-60s onwards)
dogtown & z boys + riding giants were both good as well, i thought.

feel like i'm forgetting some old favourites, but whatever.

would totally have recommended paris is burning but that's in the original post.

Love the type, colours, collage stuff. Basically everything I borrow from when making art of my own.
the apostrophes always inspire a kind of "how awful ... yet somehow perfect" reaction from me. love that they use them in all the wrong places, yet manage to miss out the one from king's road.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Gay people on Termbo

Are there really no gay people on Termbo??
I noticed many song sung by male in the "sexiest" song list. It probably doesn't mean much but it's sorta odd.
i don't think it really means anything.

finding a song sexy doesn't necessarily mean one fancies the singer. plus another thing to keep in mind is that usernames don't always indicate gender.

this is a very strange thread. but anyway, hello, i'm another queer person on termbo.

can anyone recommend / warn against this book? it was published by cherry red last year, its by jon robb from the membranes whose journalism i've always found a bit annoying, but this book seems to focus on the mid - 80's diy scene - the ex, nightingales, cravats etc. it seems to be an era without much coverage. any pointers would be appreciated as i can't find many reviews
i don't much like his style of writing, but as a series of short articles to dip into, i enjoyed the book. i think it's supposed to be fanzine-like (heavy on the opinion/ enthusiasm, lighter on the research) but found that umpteen times i was just getting into a chapter when it ended. on the plus side, short chapters = more bands covered. this is definitely not the definitive book on the subject but it's worth checking out.

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / Re: UK gigs of termbro-interest thread
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:10:54 AM »
the london popfest is happening this week, thursday to sunday.

some of it's for passholders only & much of it probably not of great interest to many on here, but on friday 26th there's an afternoon screening at the roxy bar & screen which is open to all & free:

2.15pm: The Shield Around the K (dir. Rose Dominic, 2000)
4pm: Take Three Girls: The Dolly Mixture Story (dir. Paul Kelly, 2008)

roxy bar & screen, 128-132 borough high street, SE1 1LB

anyone interested in k records will have seen the shield (personally i'm not that into it, though the live footage is ace), but i'm not sure that the dolly mixture documentary has been shown since the rough cut premiere at the barbican a year or so ago. it's great.
