Music Shit / Re: What record SOLD YOU/corrupted you?
« on: October 12, 2013, 09:39:28 AM »
Graduated from turn-of-the-millennium mainstream pop punk to the Ramones around 13, spent a couple years into Epitaph Records, Social Distortion, Rocket from the Crypt. The real eye-opener came when an older friend introduced to me to everything Mark Sultan and Greg Cartwright around 15/16. From there I found the then-brand-new Termbo. A couple months later, The Hunches' Hobo Sunrise ripped apart every conception I had about rock'n'roll.  All my friends were into noise at the time, and I thought it was stupid and not rock'n'roll, then I heard the Hunches take noise and screeching and chaos and turn into the most bracing, visceral rock I'd ever heard. Despite having heard the Stooges plenty by this point, it was only after the Hunches that I "got" Funhouse.

In terms of bad guy climax as the series progressed the Nazis were nothing compared to Gus though and Esposito gave a performance for the ages.
This is my main complaint. I enjoyed the show until the end, and I know the point of the show is Walt's transition to being the bad guy, but he's also the protagonist and has to have someone to fight. And the Nazis were some pretty bland bad guys for the show to go out on.

Get paid to get my PhD, work on liver stage malaria.
This, although I'm still in my first year of grad school, so I don't know what my PhD research is going to be yet.

Non-Music Shit / Re: what beer/wine/cocktail are you enjoying?
« on: September 24, 2013, 05:28:51 PM »
Just moved to NC from CA and so far the only beer I've REALLY been digging on is the Hoppyum IPA by Foothills Brewing out of Winston-Salem.  I'm probably forgetting some.  Mostly I've just been spending money I don't have on "fancy" cocktails over at the OCSC.

I take it you're in Chapel Hill/Carrboro? I'm in Durham.

Yeah, I like Hoppyum. The Salamander Slam IPA from Frog Level (out of some small town near Asheville, I think it's called Wayneville) is good, too. I like most of the Duck Rabbit beers I've had, too.

Live Oak's hef is the best beer ever. Did you try their dunkelweizen? It's just as good.

I've really been wanting to get into homebrewing, but haven't had a chance. Can any of you dudes who are experience in it recommend what I should get from here? http://www.austinhomebrew.com/index.php?cPath=178_33_52

Yeah, the Dunkelweizen is great. You're making me miss Workhorse.  Been thinking about starting to brew as well, and there's a similar store here in Durham.

did saul really not know? i thought he was just surprised to find out he was still there....   i do have a question though. with walt growing his hair out AND having saul's guy show up/administer chemotherapy multiple times when it is presumed the hair was growing out... are there certain chemo treatments that don't involve hair loss? or did i miss the part where the beard and hair were just pasted on to disguise his identity?  i am genuinely curious and i figure it would have been one of the first things writers would have addressed, so maybe it is possible to be in treatment and not lose the hair? again, i just have no idea about that...
Looks like it's possible, probably depends on the drug...
http://www.cancer.org/treatment/treatmentsandsideeffects/treatmenttypes/chemotherapy/understandingchemotherapyaguideforpatientsandfamilies/understanding-chemotherapy-common-side-effects-hair-loss

And yeah, Saul only seemed surprised that Walt was still in limbo, not that he'd called in the first place.

Bringin' it back because I just moved to North Carolina from Texas and have a whole new region's worth of beers to try.

Right now, it's Olde Hickory Hefeweizen: http://www.oldehickorybrewery.com/hefe-weizen.html

Quite good, and the only wheat I've had out here that's come anywhere in the neighborhood of the greatness of Live Oak Hefeweizen, which is probably my favorite beer in all of Texas.

Anything in the southeast I've gotta try?  Haven't had much from outside of NC aside from a few Georgia breweries (Sweetwater, Terrapin).

Birds of Maya - recording I made of their live set last night. Fuck a bunch of Cuntz. I skipped that show to see this. Birds of Maya killed it. Show was in a church and two folk acts opened. Kids all over the place. Best BoM set I've seen. They were fucking into it. Ad hoc PA carried no vocals, but the guitar damage spewed all ove rthis thing make up for it. Super nice guys too.

Edit: full disclosure - I probably could have made at least the Cuntz set after the Birds, but with a 9 month old I gotta pick my battles and decided to get home
after seein' zee birds for the first time last month, and yucking it up with the philly heads that know em the best, it appears that their shows over the past year are a culmination of the powers within.  seein' them in a basement was exactly what i needed.
Saw 'em for the first time last weekend at Hopscotch. Played with a bunch of folk bands at a small amphitheater.  It was everything I hoped it would be. Spacin' and Purling Hiss were no slouches, either, but Birds of Maya were on a whole other level.

Any chance of uploading that live set?

Intense and crazy episode.  I like Walt setting the end game up by taking Holly and ensuring that he has an opportunity to make sure Skylar walks before skipping town before, what can only be, a showdown with the skinhead.  What else could that heavy weaponry in the first episode of the season be for.  My guess is he bails for a year or two and then returns to wipe 'em all out.
Not even a year...we saw him turn, what, 51 at breakfast? Asking Skyler to do the bacon numbers thing. I think that was the beginning of season five, but I don't remember. And then he does 52 for himself when he's at the diner--which was definitely the beginning of season five pt 1, but a flash forward. Anyway, there's also the few months downtime we don't see after he retires from cooking and is just living the idyllic suburban life (with eighty million dollars) before Hank finds Leaves of Grass on the toilet. So he's gotta be away for a few months at most. Plus, there's no way he's patient enough to wait on revenge at this point. I'm guessing he'll be away as long as it takes him to grow a beard.

I forgot about the birthday bacon.  My first thought was of how shitty their house had become.  Figured it would be a year or two but we must obey the bacon.
Although now that I think about it, I'm not really sure how much time elapsed between Walt retiring and Hank finding the book...it seemed like a few months, but I don't know if it was ever made explicit.

Hello, it looks like our gig on Wednesday 9/18 might be falling through. If anyone can help us find a show we can jump on anywhere vaguely between Nashville, TN and Richmond, VA we could really use the help. Thanks!

heathens.radio at gmail dot com or dm...
Raleigh/Durham? I just moved here, so I don't really have anything in the way of booking contacts, but it is between the two (although way closer to Richmond than Nashville).  Bull City Records does in stores occasionally.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

Oh, there's also Duke Coffeehouse. I think the Duke radio station, WXDU, is in charge of booking the shows there, though I could be wrong. I just started grad school here and am doing DJ training at the station, so I could ask if that sounds like something you'd be interested in.

Angry angles did "black hole"
Goddamn, for the longest time I thought I was crazy because I swore there was a Lost Sounds cover of "Black Hole." I'd even get it stuck in my head sometimes and thought I had invented a cover version. Thank you for clearing that up.

Cities / Re: Houston

Sound Exchange and Vinal Edge were always my standbys growing up, but I haven't lived there in about six years, and I know a few new stores have opened up since then, but I haven't been to them. Whenever I go back to visit, I just wind up back at those two stores. Vinal Edge used to be in a completely dead part of town but moved to the Heights, an old neighborhood with a lot of vintage stores, etc. recently.

Mango's is the hip new(ish) venue, but again, it opened after I left, so I've only been there maybe once. Here's a Houston showlist page: http://www.spacecityrock.com/shows/

The Menil is an outstanding private art collection that always has interesting exhibits and is free. The Rothko Chapel is right next door and is definitely also worth a visit.

I went to this a few weeks ago when I was in Houston and enjoyed it: http://www.mfah.org/exhibitions/james-turrell-retrospective/

There's a Vietnamese placed called Mai's that everyone swears by. It burned down and subsequently reopened a few years ago--I haven't been since it reopened, so I don't know if it's changed for better or worse.

Oh, and Old Kyle is right--Les Givrals is great and cheap.

Steve Gunn - Time Off was a nice soundtrack to a lazy morning drinking coffee. Haven't listened to any of his solo work before this, and I have one GHQ lp that I like, so I was sort of expecting this to be instrumental/have vocals only as an afterthought. The singing's a pleasant surprise and free of the self-conscious weirdness of a lot of modern folk singing.

Brother JT - Jelly Roll Gospel: Pulled this one out as I was boxing up records for an upcoming move. A lot more funk influence on this one than I remembered.  The opener, "Lift You Up," is a total jam. For whatever reason I can handle JT affecting gospel ("Spirituals" was the first one I bought) a lot better than Jason Pierce doing the same, even though I do like Spiritualized. Need to give Brother JT's new one a listen.

UFO - Profile: Parts of UFO 1, 2, and the live album ("Boogie for George"). Prefer owning the albums to obvious cash-in comps like this, but it was cheap, and I'd never heard the live cut.
