Music Shit / Re: standard books about music/bands
« on: July 21, 2013, 08:01:54 AM »
Reviving this thread again--are either of the Love/Arthur Lee books any good? There's one called Arthur Lee Alone Again Or, which is really short and has pretty bad reviews online. The one called Forever Changes by John Einarson that came out a couple years ago got much better press and apparently includes a lot of material from Lee's memoirs.  I'll probably go with that one, but just curious if anyone here has read it.  Are there any other books on Love besides these two?

It's been a few years, but I remember enjoying Flannery O'Connor's Mystery and Manners, a posthumously collected book of essays that's largely about writing (also about teaching literature, Catholicism, peacocks).

In HIGH FIDELITY the main character listens to a demo from 2 teen skaters and is inspired to start a label  The demo is actually Royal Trux doing Inside Game.
Royal Trux aside, does anybody actually find the inspiration to start a label from one demo?
Not quite the same thing, but didn't Tom Lax revive Siltbreeze almost solely on the basis of TNV?

Also, if SSR ever still posts here, he might correct me on this, but isn't that the case with S-S Records and the A-Frames?

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / Re: HAWKWIND 2013 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR
« on: June 12, 2013, 08:38:01 PM »
Nik Turner did a signing at End of an Ear over SXSW and impromptu played a handful of Hawkwind classics with his backing band--almost all way younger musicians. It was pretty good as long as you weren't expecting it to sound just like Space Ritual.  He signed my copies of Hall of the Mountain Grill and In Search of Space (and presumably everything else he signed): "Stay High. Nik Turner."

Put them in a box, out of direct sunlight, in the trunk, under a blanket, etc. Lots of ways to prevent this. Just keep the records out of direct sunlight and you'll be good.
Yeah, I don't think I've ever had a problem with just putting them under one of the front seats.

aka BANGOVER, colloquially.
Thought a bangover was when you were sore from headbanging too hard the previous night.

Oh, they put up a picture? I know that band. Would anyone like to hazard a guess as to how rockin' they are?
I think I ordered coffee from one of those guys last week. The mystery is ruined!

Whoa, did the price on 1200s skyrocket over the past few years or something? I bought a new one (an MK5) on Amazon in 2007, and I could swear I paid ~500 dollars for it. Pretty sure I remember it being on sale, too, but not 70% off--they're listed at $1650 right now.

Didn't see this part, but I did catch a little bit of the obits. I had no idea Marva Whitney died. Bummer.

Didn't see a dedicated thread, so I figured I'd ask this here: is there anything noteworthy or redeemable about Palo Alto? From what I've heard and read, it seems like sky-high rent and tech yuppies as far as the eye can see. I'm visiting in about a month/potentially going there for grad school, and it looks just far enough away from anywhere good that I'd just be stuck living there.

Music Shit / Re: History of Austin Punk - Documentary or Book?
« on: January 16, 2013, 12:26:28 PM »
I would absolutely buy a book and would probably prefer one to a documentary--especially since you seem to have the materials together for a book much more so than a doc. I'd rather have tons of posters, interviews, and discographies at my disposal whenever I wanted than have all that whittled down to 90 minutes of footage. Sure, it's niche, but niche books done well transcend the small scope of their subjects.  Cataloging every time a punk has been seen on film was a ridiculous idea for a book, but I thought Destroy All Movies was awesome.

If youve gotten to the point in life where you dont enjoy living in a shithole dont move to Durham
Thanks, the alt weekly one looks promising.  Just curious, what makes it a shithole? Nothing to do? Crime (based on the pistol whipping story on the last page...)? I know a few people who have lived there or visited who liked it a lot. Just looking for opinions.

Unless you're going into the hard sciences or a glorified trade like law, graduate school is the perfect time to dick around.
Molecular biology, although maybe a physicist would call me a soft scientist. Other goal: not still be in graduate school when I'm 30.

Any websites for shows/events etc. in Durham? Gonna be visiting Jan 31 - Feb 2 and potentially moving there. Looks like I'm missing Spider Bags by a couple weeks, but that's all I know about.
