Music Shit / Re: Best 2013 Lps
« on: December 12, 2013, 02:30:23 PM »
One part of that video that stood out to me, and that I kept thinking about after watching, is the scene where the kid from Wild Nothing or whatever band (I honestly don't know) was saying, guilelessly, unselfconsciously, that she's grateful to MS because he allowed her to "grow her band."  I thought it was the oddest phrase when I first heard it and I thought, wow, what a peculiar idea (what does that even mean?) and later I realized that it's an unwitting substitution for "grow her brand."  It's esp. poignant in light of how generic her b(r)and is.
I think the top (bottom?) moment for me is the Beach Fossils dude equating moving to North Carolina as going into a "black hole of nothingness." It stood out because he named my current home, but really I'm sure he just meant "anywhere that isn't Brooklyn."

Checked out the new Cheap Time LP..... It's actually pretty good.  It's kinda unusual for a band to do post punk type stuff without taking a goth angle.
I generally agree with your JN musings (like the one yesterday-ish): he's great at copying what he's into at any given time, but his personality rarely comes through. He definitely "reuses" riffs and melody lines often, though it's often nuanced and occasionally surprising as well. That said, I like the recent Cheap Time moves the best since that early demo where they were nicking Redd Kross, and while it's probably just him covering material I prefer, it could also be he's raising the bar. CT is a live show institution for me regardless, I always enjoy the band live and rarely miss them when they come through town, they're technically excellent & play with energy. Now I'm interested in the records again.
I've only listened to the new Cheap Time once, today, and was only sort of half listening. It was good, but I don't have a strong opinion of it based on just a cursory listen. But I think Wallpaper Music was the best Jeff Novak record by a long shot...could be I'm just echoing what you said, that I like the stuff he's ripping off more now, but I did think that one had some X factor. He's still wearing a lot of the same influences he has been for the last few years, but that was maybe the first of his albums where I felt like I could say it sounded like Jeff Novak and not Jeff Novak trying to sound like so and so. The influences just melded together in the right way. Or something.

I liked the Wurster call on last week's Best Show...they've been reviving a lot of long time characters for a final sendoff, but this one was only tangentially related to the usual Wurster characters.  Lotta NJ indie rock inside-baseball jokes near the end. I listened to a lot of Best Show Gems over the past week--cross-country holiday driving and tedious lab work leave a lot of time to fill. I haven't listened to WTF in a while, probably oughta get back on board with that one.

I bought the Drags' 45x3 about a month ago at a record fair. Hadn't listened to this band since high school, probably, into 'em all over again. I also have Stop Rock n Roll, which I need to pull out. I downloaded Set Right Fit to Blow Clean Up, which I'd never heard. Had no idea they'd taken a left turn near the end of their run. Sorta Mudhoneyish? I like it.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Technics SL 1200

I scored one off Craigslist probably 2 months ago for 220. It looks rough but plays great. As stated above, patience is key.
Rough indeed, but what a price!

I've never even heard of this website and know nothing about if they have a good reputation/products/etc.

There are some great slow punk jams on the last Baseball Furies LP.

Heldon - Interface reissue on Superior Viaduct

I like this record, but it's scaring my dog.

Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / Re: Nik Turner / not Hawkwind

He was great in Raleigh on Monday, despite playing to about 25 people. Though the words "Raleigh" and "Monday" probably going a long way toward explaining the size of the crowd. Having a band of young folks probably helps the energy level, but he goes all out, not even considering that he's 73. I even bought his new LP, which ain't bad. I've also got a ticket to the Dave Brock Hawkwind all the way in DC, but now that's not until March. I've heard mixed things about that Hawkwind's live show, but if it's even close to as good as Nik Turner was, I'll be satisfied.

Music Shit / Re: Neu and Krautrock/early electronics

As far as more long form compositions go, these are probably really obvious choices, but worth mentioning:
Terry Riley - A Rainbow in Curved Air
Morton Subotnick - Silver Apples of the Moon
The first two La Dusseldorf albums are two of the world's greatest running records.

I haven't explored much of Moebius's solo work, but I like Tonspuren a lot. Superior Viaduct has reissued some good stuff in this vein recently. That Sensations' Fix album has a few tracks on it that sound like Gottsching stuff or (No Pussyfooting) cut down to radio-friendly lengths, and Heldon's Interface is also great Fripp-style guitar and electronics.

As a result of all the recent Groundhogs talk on the listening thread, I was poking around Youtube and found out Tony McPhee recorded a solo album where the entire second half was an experimental electronic piece in protest against the British aristocracy's fox hunting. Not as much bleep-bloop fun as Zuckerzeit, but really weird, and I felt like sharing it because I don't think it's been mentioned here before:

Almost none of these are actually German, but I guess they're in the same general sphere of influence.

Excited to check out A La Ping Pong, thanks for posting, Jared.

Is there still a James Arthur LP in the works?

While we're on TG bands, Teengenerate sorta fits, at least for later bands being about as good as the original. I guess Shoe did less than any of the other members. I never listened to Supersnazz all that much.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Your morning routine

I bike to the lab every day, weather permitting. Takes about 15-20 minutes. It's the bus if it's raining or snowing heavily, or if the roads are covered in ice/snow. The bus takes 30-45 minutes so I avoid it at all costs.
Yeah. It takes me 35-40 minutes to bike to my lab, but it takes just as long to drive because I have to park on the opposite end of campus and take a shuttle, so driving is reserved for rainy days, or if I have to buy something big (dog food) on the way home. Currently number 300-something on the wait list for the parking garage close to all the labs. The bus system here (Durham) is near-worthless, at least for my situation--closest stop is two miles from my house.

Where/what are you in school for?

I saw him play at End of an Ear over SXSW this year...was just scheduled to do a meet and greet/signing, but he and his band showed up and tore through a few classics--Orgone Accumulator, Master of the Universe, etc. It was real good. Can't expect the guy to perform like he's 30 or whatever, but he's definitely still got it. He signed my copies of Hall of the Mountain Grill and In Search of Space, "Stay high, Nik Turner."

I was all geared up to make the 4 hour drive to DC to see Hawkwind this week. Oh well. I guess I'll go see Nik Turner's thing again in November in Raleigh.

Simply Saucer - Cyborgs Revisted : still killer. A comp of unreleased stuff would be cool. I like the bonus tracks on this. "Low Profile" especially.
Yeah, "Low Profile"'s the one I really wish was on the LP

new True Sons of Thunder - Death Walks Behind You is a serious jam (and not an Atomic Rooster cover). The insert is gold.
