i've never spent any money on advertising aside from the business cards and merch (which we sell cheaply).

all our advertising was sympathy articles.   want priceless advertising?  have a fire  :(  no, dont.  really.

i still have never met the big time music hack for the paper nor does our entertainment weekly rag bother to distribute them at the shop (though i was on the cover when we re-opened).

for stores talkin up the $20,000 in sales.  thats what like minus the 12,000 invested?

To be honest I'm not completely sure. I just run the z-tape on the register, but I'd say that 12,000 is a fair estimate.

12,000 in stock. i assume that most stores had an extra 1 - 4 workers being paid, record store day freebees/food/etc., advertising, plus regular daily expenses.

again, im nowhere near that...but i dont have any real employees, either. and rent is cheap.   my friends acted as security (richie is menacing) and old lady and her squad ran the register while i just sorta roamed and and made sure the bands stuff went smoothly.   we called a local taco truck and they parked right out front.   gave away some stuff...gift certificates and whatnot.  we had a super popular band from town play a "surprise show".  woo hoo.   they usually pack clubs and stuff, so that was cool for the kids to see 'em in our basement.

just got our purling hiss/puffys 12 "'s today.  so our numbers arent the kind that are being posted...but maybe im just smaller than what is considered a small shop. i have one register.  trying to be posi, i guess.

we blasted through our used section (tons of stuff put out the day before) and i was totally ready for the stock being sandblasted.   also, dont have a lot dead rsd stock because i didnt get most of my big order.  im not kidding...$800 bill from our one-stop (any shops wanna suggest a good one stop for big label stuff?  pm me or something, cause im still confused almost 3 years in) for our "official rsd stuff". i sent in an order 4x that and thats what they sent me. but i also went wild with the indie label and non-official stuff--which went fast. looking back, im glad a lot of the shit didnt come now.   still, my best day ever.

i dunno...d-men need to keep their heads up.   guys are going to be afraid to hit anyone.  i didnt think torres most recent hit was that bad, either. kept his arms down and didnt hit the head...seabrook just didnt see him coming. its the playoffs...they've taken enough of the balls out of the game---im glad torres didnt get a reputation based suspension.  because thats how it usually goes.  and i hate chris neil, but he's the kind of hard nosed prick i wish the sabres had.

again...its the playoffs.  i dont like seeing guys get hurt or head shots, but those guys gotta keep their heads up.

what is illegal about that hit?

another thing from Mr Negative: If the stores are packed on RSD by people who normally don't go to stores, the impression they walk away with is that record stores are doing great! No need to support them the other 364.

i recognized most of the faces...but im in a small city and, apparently, a microscopic store. a lot of the people i didnt recognize said they heard about my store thru all the media attention record store day received this year.

the first year i had just opened a few months earlier and didnt know what it was (i think rsd #2).  i wasnt even at the shop...band was on the road and as it became clear it was a big deal as it got closer; i realized i probably should have been around that day.

thanks to user:davemartin for turning us on to it right in the nick of time.

some of the usual vs. rsd numbers (money) people who either own or work in smaller shops have posted is blowing my mind.  do small stores normally take in a grand on an average day? what are you selling?  what are your biggest sellers recently?  it'd be cool if stores got together (that werent competeing) to discuss this sorta thing.

if i was pulling in a grand a couple times a week, i'd be doing really well, but thats not the case.  i think the BIG store in town is more likely to pull those numbers, they also have millionaire backing.  they sell lots of hip-hop and gospel and top 40 stuff, in addition to actual music.  i need a new one-stop.  any shop owners/workers have any suggestions?

we did really well yesterday, i cant complain...but i feel like im not smart enough to do it alone.  tips!

Maybe some type of punch-card system could work well with RSD.  Stores could issue their own cards and customers who've accumulated XX+ amount of purchases throughout the previous year get in the store 2 hours before the general public;  X-XX get in one hour before.  Stores could decide how many tiers they'd want to apply.

great idea let's make record buying more elitist.

dont think stores didnt save stuff for their pals or local promoters.  there is greasing at ever level possible, im sure.

What!? How dare they?? Record store employees have so many other perks in life, that's just SOOOOO UNFAIR!

perks is keeping yourself a copy, not saving your buddies copies.  but i understand...im guilty as charged.

we got about 30-35 percent of our official RSD order--the sanctioned bullshit.  i have absolutely no idea how they allot items--but i have my theories.  most of them involve me whining, so ill spare everyone.

we were real busy all day...when people realized their rsd title was gone or never there to begin with--most people just went shopping.  we sold tons of used and regular stock items.

we hardly have any leftover rsd stock.  i accidentally ordered some stupid flaming lips book that nobody touched.  luckily...merge and polyvinyl and matador had stuff people wanted and we were able to get that stuff without a fight...but the major label stuff was pretty slim.  and i was careful not to order garbage or something id never stock anyway.

our one-stop got bought out a week before record store day, another distro fired our sales guy and never sent us our stuff.   it was a freakshow.  we had bands in the basement, that was fun.

how much was that?  one of the few things i wanted as far as the "official releases" went, but i did get the mississippi john hurt and trouble in mind/permanent stuff i wanted.

We are a pretty small store and normally $3,000-$4,000 is a good Saturday for us. Yesterday, we hit $20,000 in a day for the first time in store history. Last year's RSD was the previous record, which was about $13,000 or $12,000 or something. So, as much as I hate everything else about RSD, at least it has a good result.

shit...3K is a normal saturday...we're nowhere near that in buffalo.  please forward business tips.  seriously...those are nice numbers.   that said, we did a bit pretty well in here even though we barely received anything "hot" from our RSD order.  the hardcore kids were waiting in ourring rain for the revelation shit--which nobody in NY state bothered to get outside of nyc, according to their website.

our one-stop got bought out a week or two before record store day and ILC just didnt bother sending our regular order, rsd crap they were offering or respond to any emails after firing our sales guy.  im finished whining about "allotments"...just curious how they figure out who gets what.   its definitely NOT first come first serve, because i thought i had it figured out this year.
