Cities / Re: Things to do in LA
« on: August 02, 2009, 07:03:46 PM »
Anyone have any other tips on record shopping in LA?  I've spent a lot of time there and know my way around, but most of the people I know there can't see why anyone would go anywhere but Amoeba.  With Aron's and Rhino gone, I'm ass out for alternatives.

1) Vacation Vinyl  www.vacationvinyl.com

On Sunset near Virgil.  It's fairly new (less than six months old, I think), and the stock is limited, but it's not bad.   Some punk, hardcore and metal mixed in with what I guess would be considered indy rock.  I made a couple decent finds when I went last month.

2) Headline Records  - www.headlinerecords.com

On Melrose near Fairfax.  Punk and hardcore.  You can usually pick up a handful of good stuff here, although prices seem a bit high.

3) Territory BBQ & Records - www.territorybbq.com

On Hoover near Melrose.  This is also a  new place.  It's a BBQ restaurant with a record store attached.  Sounds like a great match, but both parts could fail miserably.  I haven't been yet, but I'll try it next week and see how it goes.

4) Rockaway Records - www.rockaway.com

In Silver Lake.  Various genres.  The one time I went I couldn't find anything appealing at all, and prices on just about everything seemed high.  Checking the website just now, it seems that they focus on high-end collectibles.

5) Don's Music - www.myspace.com/donsmusiceaglerock

On Eagle Rock Boulevard.  It's small and easy to miss, and the owner keeps somewhat erratic hours.  Call before heading over there.  Mix of genres, with a decent selection of garage-type stuff.  I haven't been there in over a year, however, so it may not be as good as I remember it.

6) Record Suplus - www.recordsurplusla.com

On Pico in West L.A.  Various genres.  Large selection, but 99.99 percent is crap.  I'll occasionally find some decent albums.

7) Bagatelle - http://used-vinyl.in-long-beach-ca.com/

In Long Beach.  Mainly Rock, Soul, R&B and Jazz.  No punk or hardcore.  A great place for digging.  Boxes and boxes of 45s and LPs that would likely take several full days to get through. The hours are limited - something like 11-5 Monday through Saturday.

8) Freakbeat - www.freakbeatrecords.com

In Sherman Oaks.  I haven't been to this one yet, though I've heard it ok.

from the journalist who broke the hipster grifters story...

Did anyone read the comments on this story?  It looks like the supposed victim trashed his apartment himself and made up the story about his "friend" fucking the place up.  Then he set up gift registries at Target and Bed Bath & Beyond so people could buy him new glasses, towels, two(!) ipods, etc.  People have bought him a lot of the stuff he asked for.

The guy even posted some bullshit pictures of the supposed standoff with the swat team and the wrecked apartment when people were starting to call him out on the story.

More information and bitchy comments here:

I think Ben and Luke from School Jerks did grade 15 there.

Grade 15???  Do Canadians go to school until they're 21, or do they start first grade when they're 3?

Apparently Charles Mingus' cats spent a lot of time in the bathroom.

Fucking bizarre.

I'm comforted to know my cat's not the only weirdo who hangs out in bathroom sinks...

The store Goodwill does in fact ebay its best stuff now

Does anyone know ebay seller name(s) Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. have?  I don't think I've ever come across anything that was being sold by a chain thrift store.  Do they sell through some "I Sold it on Ebay" type places?

Did they ever find out who stole those rare records from the MRR archive after Tim Yohannon died?

Nigel Planer (Neil) wrote a book called Neil's Book of the Dead.  It's funny as hell and worth buying if you can find a copy.

A great episode of the Comic Strip Presents is "A Fistful of Traveler's Checks":

He deserves some respect for taking on the prison guard's union, but the main reason they aren't building more prisons is because the state is totally out of cash.

He's not bad on the environment when compared to most other republicans, but on any other basis he's mediocre at best.  Money for transit has been cut just about every year he's been in office, he pushed for relaxed environmental standards on new highway and construction projects, lowered the vehicle licensing fee  (costing 6 billion a year in lost revenue),  and generally doesn't do a whole lot except talk about reducing greenhouse gas and then does little to actually accomplish anything, especially if it's something that might piss off businesses.

He's generally hamstrung by the fact that most of the republicans in the assembly and senate hate him and he has no clout with them and can't get any votes out of them.  He's pretty much useless.

http://cgi.ebay.com/BIG-STAR-RADIO-CITY-on-8-TRACK-TAPE-Power-Pop_W0QQitemZ160317096394QQihZ006QQcategoryZ618QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I'm liquidating part of my extensive alternative music collection from the 70's & 80's on 8-track & beyond.  This is a homemade copy of RADIO CITY by the legendary BIG STAR from 1972 on 8 TRACK TAPE.  I recorded this from the compact disc and the sound quality is excellent.  The splice was reinforced and pads replaced.  Also, I timed the tracks so there is no program change in the middle of the song!  This is a fun item and pretty cool if you like Big Star.  The label was made on a laser printer & packing/clear tape was then applied to keep it from damage.  This album to the best of my knowledge never made in onto 8 track, but it is from that era.

!!!

Would you expect any less from BIGMONEYGRIFF?

I worked with a guy who claimed that while on the high school pole vaulting team he fucked up a jump and the end of the pole got him in the nuts  One of his balls "blew up"  to about 3 or 4 times it's normal size.   Permanently.  He had to tell women he was about to bang about the giant ball because they'd get freaked out if they discovered it without any warning.

I've got a mental image of a guy on a bmx bike getting a flying roundhouse kick to the head and smashing into a table filled with Dot Vaeth Group singles.
