Music Shit / Re: Shit-Fi: new online music zine
« on: February 09, 2007, 06:57:12 AM »
The first one on that list, Afterbirth, is a retarded classic from Michigan '87, with the ridiculous band photos (looking like a low-budget Kiss/King Diamond hybrid) being the best thing about the record. I picked one up at FMU ten years ago. I'll have to pull it out and make an mp3 of one of the tunes. The refrain was something like "go to hell, you faggot french fry."

I sorta like how the "Shit List" is all sorts of genres mixed together, with no description - gonna try to check out some of the ones i haven't heard, and seems more fun to be surprised.

Thanks Joe! I figure whatever 60s reish Crypt puts out at this stage of the game has GOT to be pretty damn good, and you can count on ace packaging. Sounds like I'll be getting crazy to this.

The Ikon Story is absolutley AMAZING. Not every track is a killer, but there are plenty of top notch cuts on it  (the opening segment/ Ikon advert is about the coolest shit ever)and the package is unbeatable. Worth it for the Madd Inc. track alone. You'll play it constanty if you like to get crazy.

While on the sixties topic, anybody heard this?

THE IKON RECORD STORY: America's #1 Unsung Garage Label: 1964-1966 Double 180-gram LP CRYPT-09629 tracks (22 originals and 7 cover versions) (plus 2 radio adverts) of never reissued 1964-1966 garage punk, surf instros, frat stomp and folk-punk from 20 teenage bands recorded at Sacramento's IKON STUDIO. These 28 cuts, culled from the to-be-simultaneously-released 60-song double CD on the FRANTIC RECORDS label, are the result of FRANTIC RECORDS' Joey D and ACE RECORDS' Alec Palao having spent the last 6 years tracking down every band, every master tape, and (often without luck) the impossible-to-find 7" singles released on Ikon. This vinyl version is housed in a deluxe full-color inside-and-out gatefold jacket crammed with color and b&w photos, label shots, and extensive liner notes. After 27 years of extensive reissues of 60s garage punk rarities, only ONE Ikon track has ever made it to a reissue - WHY? Because almost NOBODY even owns any of the original Ikon 45s... The sole KNIGHTSMEN copy is in a collection in Seattle, 2 fiends in Petaluma and Australia have 12 or so Ikons, 2 in Connecticut, 4 in NJ... TUFF stuff to find, baby! Well... prepare yourselves for an ass-whomping BOOM when you drop the needle on any of these 4 sides, baby! MARAUDERS "Surf Jam", SHONDELLS "Something's Got A Hold Of Me", DENNY & KENNY DUO "Meet My Little Sweetie In The Night Time", AVANTIS "Too Much", JOHN ROSASCO QUARTET "The Shift", PROPHETS "It's All Over Now", BRISTOLS "She's Gone Away", KNIGHTSMEN "Daddy Was A Rolling Stone", MADD INC "I'll Be The One", PARISH HALL BLUES QUINTET "I Can Never Say", UNKNOWN GROUP "Searching", SHONDELLS "It's True", PROPHETS "You Wonder Why", MYMES "You Lose Girl", BOBBIES "Orangutang", TOWNSMEN "High Heel Sneakers", MADD INC "Sooperspy", AVANTIS "Countdown", BOBBIES "Truck". RC & THE TAMBOURINES "The Quirk", KNIGHTSMEN "Fever", MYMES "I've Got Better Things To Do", MERGERS "Love, You Funny Thing", TOWNSMEN "Leaving Me", SONS OF SOUND "I'm Coming Home", CAUTIONS "Groovin", SHONDELLS "I Cried Last Night", MADD INC "Batman", KEE-NOTES "St James Infirmary" DOUBLE LP $21.00 / CD $21.00

Amen, Officer Brad!!!!

Dude, I'm sorry but once you get past a certain age, say... 19, admitting to liking Crimpshrine is pathetic.
shouldnt they be pathetic for liking it at all, and not just for admitting it?

I hated all that shit back then when it was going on in the 90s - everyone would rave about Op Ivy and I thought they sucked balls, along with Crimpshrine, Jawbreaker, etc... And I always thought Screeching Weasel were crap too. Lookout is responsible for so much insipid poppunk garbage. I just buried my head in Back From The Grave and Pebbles comps till I heard Supercharger, New Bomb Turks, etc...

Used Records For Sale/Auctions/Wantlists / ebay listings + set sale
« on: January 18, 2007, 09:11:23 PM »
In an attempt to free up some record box space, I started listing titles from my $3.99 set sale boxes on ebay, starting with the letters A and B:

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewListedItems&since=30&userid=jaylitch&include=0&rows=50&sort=3&completed=1

The complete list is here and records are 3 for $10:

Fuck, when did you guys come to Boston? I'll have to slap my gig informant for not mentioning that to me. Definitely would've trekked up from Providence for that. What venue was it at?

Seriously though, I just listened to this on their website and I think it's a good record, but far from a great record. I like their other 45s better. Cool cover and severely limited number would drive me to a "reasonable" high price (i.e., the $33 I bid and lost last time it was on ebay). This is just plain stupid.

Seems like ebay hides the bidders after an auction ends at a certain amount... Up until the end you could still see everybody who was bidding. Anybody know what the dollar cap is??

I was just following that one too... almost out of my chair when I saw the ending price. Funny thing is, I was the underbidder of a copy this summer: $33. Guess I shoulda splurged and bid $50+, huh? Ummm, anybody got a copy for trade?

Perfect example of ebay's lame "bidder protection" policy. I don't know what's worse, whoever bid $377.77, or the high bidder's ridiculously exorbitant bid on a record that came out a few years ago.

Yeah, this one really pissed me off too. Searching bid histories was an easy way to get an overview of what's up there, who's bidding, and how much stuff is selling for. Most of the time I didn't even use this info to capitalize on scores for myself (though of course I was happy when it did); it was more of a way just to keep up with things. I barely have enough time in the day to keep up with the daily "punk" postings, nevermind garage, new wave, and whatever's hidden/misfiled in general "rock" or other categories.

They say scammer "bad guys" (an actual childish quote from their explanation) are to blame, but I'm sure it has more to do with them missing out on their cut of people hitting up underbidders and selling outside of ebay, thus avoiding listing/final value fees.

Ryan's right, unless you have elaborate daily searches in place and the time (and patience) to wade through tons of crap, we're going to be missing out on lots of stuff. Fuck.

And to boot, eBay just rendered "lewdsnot" irrelevant.

Ha - mystery solved! It's on their first, self-released single (the one on blue vinyl).

I saw the Fireworks live circa 1993-94 in Providence - they played to an audience of maybe 20 people on a week night and they were killer.
