Music Shit / Re: Recent Acquisitions
« on: February 10, 2015, 08:09:37 PM »
Today i got 4 Ohio releases "so obscure" they are not even on Discogs, or maybe even on the web in 2 or 3 cases?
1. 'The Quatrillion Tapes', a mysterious minimalist soundtrack of analog sci-fi synth and guitar blips, clicks and blares found on a tape reel within an estate sale purchased tape machine back in '96.
2. Myke Rock's kid 45 from when he won a talent contest way before he was in Screaming Urge as a 15 (?) yr old. He mentioned it in an interview somewhere awhile back, cool to find it.. can't wait to hear it.
3. 'Hillside Garage Bands' sealed CS of a bunch of Comeblowus 60's garage bands.
4. Deadlys / Penetrations blue vinyl boot 7" of more 60's Cbus garage.

Ohio, easily. Consistently great/influential stuff across multiple genres since at least the 60's. I've told people before that the golden triangle of music could be Detroit/(+ Ann Arbor etc., that whole zone, Stooges, Hamtramck, Clone Defects, modern post-60's/70's stuff, you know how Detroit is kind of spread out) / Cleveland / Columbus.. but then you can also add Dayton funk, Cincy soul, RnB, etc. King Records, James Brown, he's not native but.., Bootsy, also Jazz dudes like the Ayler bros or Roland Kirk and Contortions / Bush Tetra / DNA type NY'ers who played w/ Pete Laughner, or Ubu, came from OH. etc. etc. Extermination Nights '74/'75. Pagans.

But then maybe it could be "Ohio and New Zealand have the best musics", per capita or something? NZ and nowhere else really has the consistent good shit as OH tho. A bunch of the 70's punk dudes in Columbus are still doing good stuff and never really stopped, tho lots didn't get released, so far. Cbus has even better stuff than Clevo overall too, but doesn't really get as much credit due to how heavy the proto- thing was/is up there.. Indians>Browns>Cavs, all consistent losers too.  New York rockers are mostly transplants (?) and/or industry chumps and California's over-rated tho there's some great stuff, a lotta chud too. Bad hippie hangover blackout eras. Those places are "just bigger" so there's more noticeable good stuff everyone always hears about, more so than the per-capita type thing and consistent output of Ohio. It sometimes seems like it's a really small incestuous group of the same people making OH or NZ music stand out tho.. but the Cramps, electric eels, and Pagans are all related by blood so maybe it is the water.

The new biography by Kim Gordon sounds pretty interesting. Seems like she accusing Moore for being unfaithful with a groupie ... but wasn't it the other way round? Anyhoo I live for sleaze.
No way, heard it was him and his Manhattan apt that he kept for the young skeeze.

I'm reading this great zine from Portland '97, w/ faves like Smegma, Royal Trux, TJSA, Dead Moon, Meltzer...  http://unionpole.com/assets/otp.pdf Osmotic Tongue Pressure No 5. The name is familiar but how come i didn't see this at Used Kids back in the day?

Luke Fowler & Kosten Koper - The Way Out, A Portrait Of Xentos Jones (32'00", UK, 2003)

Cited by Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton as "a classic of bric-a-brac nonconformity.", 'The Way Out' was a cut-up DIY concept LP released by the "mysterious" L.Voag (aka Xentos) in 1979. Situating himself in an inverted parallel universe where pop music was made by modernist, serialist composers and the avant-garde was left to those on the fringes of acceptance, Amos (aka Xentos) continued to produce and distribute a diverse mass of tape projects throughout the 80’s on his own label, Its War Boys, which spanned most known and unknown musical genres, under a myriad of multiple identities. Fowler/Koper's film creates a shape-shifting portrait of Xentos by interweaving snippets of his multifarious musical incarnations with new interviews, scripted scenes, found / filmed footage and unearthed Super-8 films by Xentos himself.

Conception, camera (DV/Super 8 ), script, sound recording: Luke Fowler & Kosten Koper.
Editing, Post-Production: Luke Fowler.

Note: There is a full list of credits at the end of the film citing sources for all music /interviews/film footage etc. featured, but our version of the film contained here within cuts off just before they roll.
This was great, glad there's a more recent link http://vimeo.com/93350187

Also watched that Cosmic Psychos around the same time in Dec. and the Circle Jerks one someone just posted, both thumbs up. Esp the Psychos. Anyone know if the 60's Los Saicos one ever got made/finished?

Side 3 Live at the Piccadilly Inn, Day The Earth Met The... Rocket From The Tombs.. seriously, why did Television even bother to come out after this? Keep meaning to check the TV set in full from one of their Cle nites that i dl'd some time ago, but have yet to do so. Tho the only reason i have even shown much interest again in TV in recent times is due to listening to so many Laughner bands doing covers in the 1st place..

I remember reading years ago somewhere on the net that there will be a 2LP reissue of "Don't Like You" with demo recordings on the other disc. Also a 3LP reissue of "Forgive Thee" was mentioned. Anyone know what's the situation with these releases?
Those would be nice..

In the meantime, the band have been posting so many hours of live sets and rarities on their Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/morbidweb it's enough to drive new and old fans completely bonkers!

Any documentation of the Flag cover?
It's on a tape https://soundcloud.com/northernspyrecs/pc-worship-wasted-recorded It's cool, someone should press it to 45.

Saw those dudes play to no one besides me and the sound guy at the 1st outta town date on their recent-ish tour, due to the promoter not remembering that she booked it and then dropping the ball when she was 'reminded' of it by the band/agent/label/whomever about a week before by not even bothering to try and add a local to the bill. Total bummer for them.

Seen 'em a few times before that as well and they always seemed to be doing interesting things and i would always think i needed to check 'em out more, which i finally did at some point.

Would like to see the Wrecks - Teenage Jive demo reissued.
It was booted as one side of the Eat Skull tour tape (circa their 1st 45).

Non-Music Shit / Re: What Youtube video are you watching today?

http://youtu.be/a9Wie9U7ggM "Lou Reed private memorial Apollo theater" - it's "ok", stories are nice enough, performances are passable/whatever, and when it happened i sure did think, "people sure do like that Jesus song.." but i can't really imagine actively watching this besides background, as it is for me now. Probably the most interesting aspect (20 mins from end of vid) is that it took place 50 days after passing, doubling as a 49th Day Ceremony in the Buddhist tradition of bardo.

I just watched The Slog Movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KRFdKrvwr0&spfreload=1
Quote
The original version of the 1982 Los Angeles hardcore punk scene document by Dave Markey, shot on Super-8 film for We Got Power Films. Filmed over the span of a year or so (beginning in June 1981), The Slog Movie captures many a So Cal hardcore historical moment including Henry Rollins' first show with Black Flag; West Hollywood Sheriff's busting up another night at Oki-Dogs; Circle Jerks and Wasted Youth at the Whisky, Red Cross (before they became Redd Kross) and Sin 34 live on the Santa Monica Pier; TSOL, The Cheifs (intentionally misspelled), Fear and Circle One (featuring the late John Macias) all shot at Bards Apollo. Also includes homespun sketch comedy and a commercial for the original Black Flag / Ray Pettibon skateboard. An audio / visual counterpart to We Got Power! fanzine.
I could almost not even care about the SoCal punk/hardcore scene generally (tho it's fine, whatever) but lotsa cool stuff in here and elsewhere on his 'tube channel that i've seen recently.
