David Nance is a very good record. The Silver Wings song is fucking with my head. Country song with noise guitar solo. FUCK. Pretty much everything I love about music in one song. Then the next song is a simple acoustic rocker with an electric piano player who sounds like they are having a seizure. A really good guitar rock record. This is really surprising to me because I did not especially like the Goats Head Soup remake. Maybe I should re-visit.

I dig that he can vocally pull off a Merle Haggard cover...yet only two songs prior, his vocals remind me of David Yow.  Toally agree with ya about that solo too!  I really dug the GHS remake - it's not drastically different from the original for the most part, yet still adds a nice layer of scuzz.  Not familiar with Simon Joyner besides this LP, anybody here into his stuff?

VERY excited to hear more from Fully Glazed!  And speaking of the Loki label, just gave the Midnight Mines a listen...good stuff!

david allan coe - requiem for a harlequin

never heard it. really strange. in ways it sounds like a companion piece to Kim Fowley's outrageous. slight charles manson vibes too. you could probably play a drinking game with how many times he says the words "asphalt jungle". how did i go so long without hearing this? need to dig deeper into coe's actual discography, clearly ive been in the dark for way too long.

"Penitentiary Blues", "The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy", "Longhaired Redneck", "Rides Again" and "Human Emotions" are all good ones.

One failed to mention that the "Suicide set" did not involve synths at all, juet guitar and violin and maybe a rhythm machine on some of the songs.  It didn't sound anything like Suicide.

The worse you try to make it sound, the more I wish I could have seen this!  Even though I might've left frustrated.  Beats leaving a show bored.

@rr: It might be time to simply state that Royal Trux were a terrible live band.  Would they even dispute it?  I saw them in '93 or '94 when they were touring Cats and Dogs.  They performed as a duo, which was disappointing, because of course one wanted to hear the songs from the last couple of LPs and singles, which screamed out for a powerful, rock-quartet treatment.  No such luck.  It was interesting but not at all pleasurable to watch, and it didn't help that they were two or three hours late to the gig because they were out ------ ----.  Years later NMH told me that they regarded that show as their "Suicide set" (as in Rev/Vega) which makes sense and lends a retroactive intellectual appeal to the show that was manifestly absent in the moment.  I saw them a second time in 2015, when they played a sold-out reunion show at Irving Plaza.  This time it was a full band but it was almost as messy, the sound was generally poor, and JH was sometimes painful to watch, writhing on the floor in a state of apparent intoxication while NMH, in a state of apparent sobriety, accompanied her with workmanlike aplomb (it sank and stank).  They closed with "Back to School," which was nice and served to remind one that they are at their core very thoughtful, self-possessed people with an acute awareness of their story and legacy, but the show was garbage and they had to have known it.  NMH's historical reenactment of Twin Infinitives in 2013 is the only time they worked well "live" in one's experience, and one must qualify this by saying that said show was closer to a Borgesian dare than a conventional rock show (and it was brilliant.)

Jennifer would probably say the reunion sets were great...but both times I've seen them, she was way too wasted to making that judgment.  Who knows what NMH would say.  I never got to see them in the 90s...so can't judge those shows, but the one you describe doesn't sound bad at all.  I've read similar complaints where people expected em to sound like "Twin Infinitives" and the 3rd LP...only to get a polished rock band with 2 drummers.  The reunion gigs (judging from 2 shows I saw and the live LP) have their flaws - mainly, Jennifer getting too intoxicated, but they were both fascinating to watch.  Far better than watching them do a tightly rehearsed, totally sober set of songs spanning their career.  I doubt that the new live LP (which I think includes the show you attended) would change your mind though.  Would love to see/hear footage from that 2013 set if anyone's got it...

I also liked the Bill Orcutt (and the Haino too actually, tho the historic context plays a big role in that) LP quite a bit...I had heard his VDSQ release, and wasn't into it, but this one I enjoyed.  No Jandek records in my collection!

Wow, no posts in almost a week in this thread!  Here's my Saturday listening.

Melvins - A Walk Through Love and Death 2LP - First LP of this is pretty cool - not untypical for the Melvins - yet the songs don't come off quite as heavy as usual.  Having Steven McDonald on bass seems to have given them a slight power-pop influence at times.  Overall, reminds a bit of "Stag" though not quite as weird as that one.  The second half of this is a soundtrack to an unreleased as-of-now film, and it is pretty much weird noise and field recordings.  Some interesting moments in it, but didn't listen to it today.

Cop Shoot Cop - White Noise LP - Holds up surprisingly well!  Haven't listened to any of their major label stuff that follows this LP in many years, kind of curious what I'd think of it now.  Guessing I wouldn't dig it, I thought they were pretty weak compared to the earlier stuff even when they first came out.

Daddy Longhead - Cheatos LP - Cool, under-rated record from Jeff Pinkus and friends.  The USA/Mexico LP had me going back to some Butthole Surfers classics.  This LP is pretty similar to late 80s/early 90s BHS - not nearly as great, but something I've heard a lot less.

David Nance - Negative Boogie - First listen to this one, sounded great on first listen.  The Simon Joyner/Nance collaboration "Goat Heads Soup" has been getting a lot of play around here too.

Integrity - Howling For The Nightmare Shall Consume LP - never paid much attention to Integrity after their original break-up of the classic lineup.  No clue who's playing on this one besides Dwid.  Figured I'd give it a shot - I'm not super familiar with their later-period stuff, but this seems like their best release since the Melnicks got the boot.  More of a metal record, than HC - pretty slow and sludgy for the most part.  Reminds me of the slower heavier tracks on "Humanity is the Devil" and "Seasons of the Size Of Days".

The Stranger 7" - Haven't been a fan of the new wavey stuff Lumpy has been putting out of late, just a little too goofy for my taste (tho I've heard a small % of what they put out).  But this one I dig.  Nice mix of HC and noise-rock.

Royal Trux - Platinum Tips & Ice Cream LP - Live LP compiled from their first two reunion gigs.  Could probably end up writing an essay on this - but will just say while it's a sloppy mess much of the time, it's definitely enjoyable.  Cool to hear tracks from their final 2 studio LPs played right alongside a "Twin Infinitives" track - the studio versions would sound dramatically different, here they blend into a nice whole.

Brainbombs - Inferno LP - Never paid a lot of attention to Brainbombs after "Fucking Mess" - I remember there was that double LP that seemed to push things as far as they could go (to the point where they were even recycling song titles).  This is very good though - there's very little shock value in the vocals/lyrics - though the music is pretty much what you'd expect.  Which is what I want when I put on a Brainbombs record.  Nice to see them still going, while also exploring different paths with the Bremen side project.

Heard Rob's side of that split 7" (or at least one track) on Facebook, it sounded great.  Really liked his LP from last year, definitely recommended if you dig Robbie Basho 12-string type stuff.

Looking forward to this one, love the "Goat Heads Soup" cover LP and some other stuff I've heard of his.  Supposed to a be a 7" coming out on Richie this summer as well.

On Jerry Garcia's birthday (August 1st), there will be a musical celebration in Cleveland featuring David Nance and local rock group THE COWBOY.  Not far down the street the same night will be performances from The Stranger (Lumpy Records) and Perverts Again.

I'm all in on "modern psych" like Kikagaku Moyo, In Zaire, Mammatus, shit... some of the new Circle, but is it really far removed from the jam band universe?

... and having said that I vaguely recall someone saying jam band Orzic Tentacles were actually good.

Never heard the bands you mentioned, checked out Kikagaku Moyo, sounded good.

here's some I liked

USA/Mexico - Laredo
Hepa-Titus/Teenage Larvae - Omega Pig
Mountain Movers - S/T
Bardo Pond - Under the Pines
feedtime - Gas
Taiwan Housing Project - Veblen Death Mask
Brainbombs - Inferno
Kaleidoscope - Vol. 3
Simon Joyner & David Nance - Goat Heads Soup
PC Worship - Buried Wish
Tropical Trash 7"
FNU Clone Inc.
Alvarius B and Skullflower LPs on Nashazphone

I still feel like Cunning Stunts is not a great Cows record.

I still remember being shocked when you mentioned this in your Amrep article in Z-Gun!  I could just as easily pick "Effete..." as their best though.  Effete, Peacetika, and CS were the 3 I listened to a lot when I was younger.  Though, I didnt like Peacetika much at the time.  Think it's great now.  Whenever I listened to older or newer Cows stuff, I find myself wishing it was one of those three.  Pig Minor was a real grower though, great LP to go out on.

Killdozer slagging should be taken over to the "Worse Than Pop Punk" forum.

I have seen GBs, Hand Over Head, Thrall, and They Never Sleep.  Plus Mike Hard Band.  Always an entertaining time, though David Livingstone on guitar takes things to a higher level.  Sometime, I gotta dig up the Hand Over Head demo - it's got a few tracks that never made it to vinyl.

I do not see why people would not like most of the Amrep stuff, Cows, killdozer, Tar, the Dope N Guns comps, and a bunch of other stuff I am probably forgetting kicked my ass when I first heard it and still does. But then again, I am only 20 so it is probably still new to me since I got into it when I was 14 or so.

Killdozer was on Touch & Go, dawg.

They had a 7" on Amrep tho
