^ Still haven't picked up Splazsh, but I like the singles. Okay, I like the "Thriller" series best... as for Honest Jons releases, I do like that T++ doublepack a lot.

Revisited Confield recently and enjoyed it more than I thought I would... it got filed fairly quickly when I first got it, though I bought it more as an attempt to "get" glitch stuff, so I guess the wide exposure to "weirder" music far and wide in the intervening time may have opend up my earpores a bit.

What does it mean that I still prefer the UK stuff "influenced" by DJ Nate more than the DJ Nate stuff I've heard (the 12" teaser to the album)? What are the rules of appropriation on this one? I do fully intend to check out some of that Spinn and Rashad stuff, tho'...

Last night while cooking dinner (soup. almost always soup.):

Sun Ra - Sleeping Beauty... finally picked this up, this and that Dadawah LP are two things I've been eyeing to keep my lobes massaged, the samples I've heard of that are just so smoove. This 'un is great, but as far as "relaxed Ra" I think I still prefer Lanquidity.

Bo Diddley - Have Guitar, Will Travel... So fukkin' great.

T. Rex - The Slider, Love this album but listening to it after Diddley was a mistake. The boogie was just so un-HUNG in comparison. I mean, it's a diff thing but it was like juxtaposing Diddley's jawbreaker-sized cajones next to Bolan's chiclets. NOTHIN' CHEWIN'. Will keep properly segregated in future times.

Morning bus trip:

MV&EE+Bummer Road - Deep Space Circuit (disc 1)... hadda leave early to hit up physical therapy before work. Needed "e-z morning" tunes, this did just fine in a cottage cheese stylee. I'm guessing these folks are mostly hated here, and I haven't kept up w/ their prolific asses since the Golden Road stuff started so much, but summa the stuff I've checked in on over the years has stuck w/ me. This is somewhat recent (3-4 years ago?) live recordings, and I think they maintain a nice "rural fug" that "keeps me smoked". Gentle but the multi-hued threads dangle 'round the edges. Does the Siltbreeze connection gain any mileage here?

Birchville Cat Motel - Chaos Steel Skeletons (random disc, couldn't see which on the iPod)... Forgot I picked this stuff up back in the, y'know, drone years. These discs are all of early stuff recorded for microcomps and whatnot, much harsher vibe than his albums proper. Lotsa feedback, bent sine queefs, washing machine stuff, whatever. I get "in the mood" for a disc of this every now and again, and after physical therapy this seemed pretty nice... not as harsh as power electronics or nuthin', and definitely some throwaway stuff, but it made me think he must have lived with some nice, damp rugs through the years. Musty.

Quite a bit of time each week. Would love to copy frankie's format but i've got a busted elbow so yr lucky for each correct capitalization. Got a desk job that is either 'cushy' or 'mind numbing', so i do a lot of browsing/buying during the workweek. Mailorder up the ass, and a lot of overseas techno pricing. Craving a trip to ikea after checking assorted expedit arrangements cuz the slab city i'm nurturing at home has nowhere to go but vertical. I listen to stuff on the iPhone on my bus commutes and at work, don't buy too many CDs any more... my home stereo is my refuge from a world I can't see well enough to keep from falling 10 ft onto a bike path, so you'll find me groping wax most weeknights from 6pm until bedtime or the wife and I pop in a DVD. Listen while reading, cooking, whatever. Still feel bad for records that got filed with only a couple spins under the belt... did I really "get it"? Probably not. I do hold back when I start to feel burned out and will go a couple weeks without sweating it, when my ears stop getting that magic tingle and just get.,. waxy. The weekend is pretty much all records spinning while I'm at home, which can be pretty much a full daze worth in the winter months. I have a few record freak friends, went on a quad manDate multistop dig last weekend. Just try not to talk about it with other friends.

Great set and great interview afterwards. Keep 'em rolling in. I want another Kevin Failure Eastern Bloc Block or Tom Lax NZ Extravagonzo.

Or would settle for more live Sabbath boots as well.

steve miller band - fly like an eagle - YES.  this record should come in a beer koozie.

Gonna break out th' BUFMS box to soak in their "edit" while I koozie my damn self tonite.

What is this "Bass Puppy"? I'm not too familiar w/ S&S, think I've heard a couple tracks on WFMU or somewhere that I liked but never followed up. But I like dubstep! Or... some dubstep. So now I am kurious ojay.

On that end, a good deal of spins this weekend went to Mala - Return II Space, which is probably the only actual "dubstep" thing I've bought this year. Not counting the Hessle, Hemlock, Swamp 81 stuff I've snagged (well, that Skream 12" is, okay)... they all do right by me but are really crossing tons o' lines. The Mala release is great and maintains thee vintage DMZ flavor of joints gone passed.

NWW - Livin' Fear of James Last... only NWW I owns. I like it, been watching that NWW thread to perhaps snag some vinyl but for now this has plenty to wallow in / twitch my jaw to.

Mike Rep + Quotas - Stupor Hiatus & Ozzie - The Parabolic Rock... yesterday was hot as a nice, hot fuck. Went back to back to back to back on these and couldn't resist downing a couple beers, though I was awaiting the cool evenin' time to go for a run w/ my betrothed. I still did! These things made me a fuggin' champ.

Sheeit! Glad this didn't hit Wednesday, or those of us commuting to Home Blitz (awesome show, btw) woulda been fukk'd. I got outta there just as shit was getting heavy on Thursday, was afraid my bus was gonna hold off on leaving but we made it out before the real shit started.

On the plus side, it may have washed out whatever that smell was behind Ground Zero... did somebody drown a cat in puke and then bury it in dogshit?

Also: Good set Aluminum Knot Eye! Would witness again. A++++ Hell-er.

In fact I'm more a fan of the housier EP's of Andres. Really have to check the Moody out.

Any recommendations? Aside from II, I've got either Moments in Life or About Time (ordered one of them but received the other, can't recall offhand which way it went).

Also... any experience w/ 3 Chairs? How does Detroit house fare in a supergroup setting? See also: Urban Tribe...

Mick Collins' vocals, supposedly recorded at a Dirtbombs show, are featured on the new Moody EP Ol' Dirty Vinyl. Haven't heard. Has somebody?

I've got this. Love the 12"... I just found out about the Mick Collin thing a couple of days ago and haven't spun again to check that song specifically, but as a package I like this more than Det.riot (haven't heard Anotha Black Sunday yet) as far as recent-vintage Moody goes.

Edit: I esp. think you'd like this 12" considering how much you dig that Andres II album. The "dirty vinyl" element here brings it a bit closer to that style, though still further to the house end of the spectrum then Dez, who mixes in a bit more hip-hop IMO. Fugga genre. Great tunes.

Has anyone checked that JA Caesar stuff out? Sounded interesting, but prolific...

I like that Speed, Glue and Shinki Eve lp more the more spins it gets...

Agree w/ the general sentimens above that the writing in this is fairly middling, but that there is a lot of interesting info contained within. I haven't extensively hunted out the stuff in his top 50 (or whatever) list, but I've enjoyed quite a bit of what I have heard. But I'm not terribly discerning.

Really dig Toshi Ichiyanagi even if he did break up the Beatles by loosing Yoko back onto the market.

I haven't had the guts to click thru on this yet, but from the blurb I read it appears to be Pitchfork's new Klearinghouse of the Kultic, a sort of FOURTEEN DIMENSIONAL "The Out Door". No doubt the non-Euclidean, non-trivial topographies mapped out by these complex linkages will sound out new depths of swamp-ass'd Lovecraftian laff-insOUTS that should provide fertile fodder for this very thread...

Went to Costa Rica in Feb/March 2009... only "resort" vacation I've ever been on. It was awesome, but I can't really say I experienced a lot of the culture or anything... took day trips to do a mangrove tour, check out some of the mountain scenery, and do the zip-line thing. Other than that it was all about the all-inclusive BOOZE and warm weather. Drank Pina Coladas, read "I Have Fun Everywhere I Go" while lounging in hammocks, and drank more (mostly in the pool).

Is now kinda the hot season? My advice would be to keep cool. Lemme know if you can score that stuff; I was not aware of that and wish I had been.

Oh yeah, saw a crazy TeeVee show in the hotel room one night that was all about dance clubs. They interviewed Ellen Allien. That was kinda weird.

The Denny's in San Jose was gross.

Miranda -- I think that is In the Company of Thieves... I haven't actually seen the dude selling records there (I've seen one on Willy St) but I think I have heard about that...

Re: Glass Nickel -- You was practically on mah block. I don't know how often they have basement shows there but I've seen some good 'uns, topped by a Sword Heaven / 16 Bitch Pileup set where the Sword Heaven drummonster brought his wardrum upstairs mid-set for the enjoyment of all patrons present.

Music Shit / Re: Best hangover record
« on: June 17, 2010, 11:46:54 AM »
... intensify a punishing hangover...

I've followed this path as well, and I agree that it is usually oddly slotted between "regular" hangover (where mild soundz hold s'whey) and ACTUAL hangover (wherein silence is sought but seldom found). It's a fine hairline, this "Actuel" hangover, where Brotzmann sops the sotted brow and the Broken Flag box buffets the burdensome bloodvessels with banshee abandon. Brutal!

I'd like to see MRI scans of these distinct states. Perhaps this will be my break into the bioinformatics sector...

Yeah, it's fuggin' sweltering. Well, I'm in A/C right now but will be back in the muck shortly.

Probably already took care of yr caffeine needs, but FYI for other days here, if it's still super hot out I would recommend the iced coffee at In the Company of Thieves @ 908 E Johnson if you can make it there.

Otherwise, there'a a few options I would think are much better than Starbucks... Ancora? If you mean strong, like strong and BLACK, then I'm not as sure of the breakdown, 'cuz I usually just French press my own. Bradbury's (just down the hill from where Cafe Montemarte used to be on the outer loop) has good french pressed coffee, but you'll likely have to submit to some fairly tepid indie rock.

If yr drinking sugar-things, the White Zombie at Ancora is good, the Spanish latte at Zoma on Atwood is a personal fave, and I've heard that Cafe Soleil on the capitol square (under L'Etoile) has something mind-blowing simply called "magic coffee", but I have not yet partaken.

This has been a slow week at work.
