I saw Louie perform in Atlantic City this weekend, and it was great. Quick narrative of the show (No Spoilers):
7000 Seat Arena, 7 PM Show, probably sold about 4000-4500 of the seats. There was a 10PM show too.
Todd Barry opens. Did about 20 minutes of material. Gets a lot of laughs from me, luke warm response from the crowd, has one or two home runs. Love Todd Barry, and I'm really glad I got to see him. Seems like his style doesn't really lend itself to an arena setting, and I would rather see him in a club, but whatever, he's great.
Louie does about 90 minutes. I'm pretty sure it was the first time he did his entire year's worth of material for an audience that size. The bits were great with two or three tiny gaps in the flow of laughs, but I could tell that by the time he finishes a tour with this material, the set will be super tight and make an excellent special. Besides, at this point I'm just as interested in hearing him speak thoughtfully about life, and I don't expect every second to be a laugh riot. That being said, I think he is working with a great foundation of material, and it seemed like he's about 85% there in terms of making what he has as funny as it can possibly be. Material included a lot of familiar topics: body image, stories about his daughters, how fucked up cell phones are, etc. Closing bit was excellent, but I don't want to give anything away. Bottom line is that he is worth going out of your way to see.
