I came across a flyer for this record store when I was in Moscow a few weeks ago, but I didn't get a chance to visit the place.

http://dig-store.ru/

it's adress is
Pevchesky Pereulok 1/2 building #1 close to Kitay-Gorod metro station.

i've also heard good things about this place http://artinrussia.org/the-legacy-of-unofficial-art-in-st-petersburg-the-case-of-pushkinkaya-10-art-center/

there's an exhibition on Dutch punk at the centraal museum. they got some interesting things on display, fliers record covers pictures etc. it mainly focusses on Amsterdam and Utrecht. Fairly surreal.

Unfortunately 90's style ska-punk and nu-metal seems to be what's most popular over in Russia.

Looks like there is some decent stuff in Perm at least,

and this guy from Kirov has apparently been listening to the lil bunnies

i don't think anyone in eg the uk who was really wanting to rebel against society would be in to punk music tho! it is basically old guys stuff, nostalgia. all those kids who were rioting and looting last summer weren't punks that's for sure.

The vast majority of those kids were not conciously participating in political protest. their actions were just a logical conclusion of a particular aspect of mainstream culture, the looting fits in with consumerism and the wish to get stuff without paying for it.

Also not everybody who wants to rebel against society wants to be a punk, punk is just a small aspect of the types of counter cultural movements. Nor does everybody who's into punk want to rebel against society.
But in some societies more freedom is given for counter cultural movements, and I think the degree of this freedom within a society influences the way punk developes in that society.

yeah there are lots of homeless in Tokyo, life is tough there for lots of people.

well i guess it's because there is nothing to rebel against if you have an easy comfortable life like there is in those latter places.

By that reasoning Japan should have an incredible punk scene.
Having a comfortable life plays a role though, I live in northwestern Europe, and governments here tend to invest in concert halls, my municpal government has a fund to help bands tour in foreign countries, most bands don't see the point of biting the hand that feeds them.

But I think it also has to do with the degree of conformism demanded in society, I don't know about Russia, but it seems there is more tolerance for people who want to stay outside of mainstream in the states than there is in Western-Europe.
