At the end of the day, it comes down to the person, not the gear. However, if you play music a lot, playing a guitar/bass you really like makes a world of difference. If you can't afford good gear, you just take what you can get. I've been there.
I couldn't care less what ratchet/wrenches I was using before I started working on cars. Once I got in part time at the hot rod shop, working eight hours a day under a lift, I really grew to appreciate quality hand tools -- the ones that made jobs easier...ratchets that wouldn't slip and line wrenches that wouldn't round fasteners. I helped my neighbor today replace the radiator fan and coolant temp sensor on his mom's 1999 Saturn. When I broke out a 3/8" flex-head ratchet to clear an obstruction he was stuck on, it blew his mind. He didn't know such a tool existed.
I always preferred using lower-end basses for shows in case they got stolen. I remember seeing the Orphans play in Los Angeles in the early/mid 2000s and Wade snapped the headstock off his 4001 Ric as he was spinning it around. He didn't flinch and went straight for his backup Gibson Thunderbird. I think I still feel worse about it now than he did back then.
