Heater is a three-piece Columbia, Missouri super group, if such a thing exists. Heater's guitarist and lead singer, Zach "Zz" McLuckie, used to be a member of CAVE and Sneakers (both have released records on Permanent Records), among others. Heater's bassist / second guitarist, Jeremy "Jerusalem" Freeze also plays guitar in Jerusalem and the Starbaskets and both he and Heater's drummer, Jon "Wujj" Wujick, formerly jammed together in California Raisins (their only release was a split 10" with CAVE also on Permanent).

Now that you have the band history, we might as well get into the sounds confined within, Heater's first widely distributed release. "God and Hair" is a super upbeat, melodic pop record in essence, but as I mentioned before, these guys come from a very DIY background. It's got some fast repetitive lo-fi punk rock jams with reverb enhanced vocals similar to those found on the Sneakers "Children Into People" EP, and some Clean-esque pop elements, but it's also got tracks with a great laid back summertime '90s alt-pop vibe not too dissimilar from the least noisy '90s moments of Sonic Youth and Sebadoh. All of these elements come together and make for a unique sound (thanks to a little help by Cooper Crain of CAVE's analog production techniques) and make for one hell of a summertime DIY pop jammer.

Available now here! (red wax, ltd 100, black wax, ltd 400])

The second Drunks With Guns LP officially reissued to cassette. Limited to 100.

Drunks With Guns were a nihilistic, noise rock / dumb punk band from St. Louis in the mid-to-late 80s.

Their second LP entitled ?Second Verses? from 1990. Second Verses contains material recorded by Drunks With Guns between 1984-1990, including "Zombie", "Drunks Theme," "Punched", "Leprosy", "Enemy", an alternate take of "Wonderful Subdivision" with more guitar in the mix, "Two Minutes", "Drug Problem", "DWI", and "A Beer".

The original LP also included covers of the Weirdos' "Life of Crime" and the Stooges' "Raw Power", but those tracks have been cut from this cassette tape reissue per the band?s request.

In case you missed our reissue of the debut LP on cassette.  Here's the story behind Drunks With Guns:

This band is legendary and there's loads of rumor and heresy surrounding the legend. The band formed in 1984, released about a half-dozen singles and a couple LPs, played four shows and called it quits (well, in the same way Chrome called it quits anyway. The original singles and the LPs (and even the Complete Drunks With Guns tape) are virtually impossible to find these days. Among others, Monty Buckles of the Lamps is a big fan of the DWG and he wrote an excellent article in Z-Gun #2 that we definitely recommend reading at some point. Anyhow, we've reissued the Drunks With Guns "Second Verses" LP (sans the cover tracks) in an edition of 100 tapes and they're ready for consumption. This tape ain't no bootleg neither. We actually took the time to get in touch with Mike Doskocil, the singer from Drunks With Guns and got permission for the release. We were hoping to do an LP reissue, but apparently the master tapes are in unusable condition. Don't fret, these tapes were professionally dubbed and the fidelity is about as good as your gonna get out of a cassette tape (read: they sound like they should, especially for a Drunks With Guns release). Don't have a cassette deck? What better excuse to get one than a Drunks With Guns tape! Tape decks are littering thrift stores everywhere. Save them from the landfills and enjoy some of the sweet jams that have been issued on the cassette tape format lately, there have been some great ones! Fans of Brainbombs, Flipper, and all things noise rock will definitely want to snatch one of these up before their gone.

Available now here! (pro-dubbed, one-sided b&w j-card, limited edition of 100)

Distros and stores please get in touch for wholesale rates at permanentwax@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Heater resides in a small college town off of I-70 known as Columbia, Missouri. The same cultural oasis in an otherwise sprawling rural wasteland that spawned Cave and Mahjongg, not to mention their various side-projects (ie. Lazer Crystal, Bitchin' Bajas, Jerusalem and the Starbaskets, etc.) Back in the late '90s and early '00s, Columbia was home to one of the most prolific, eccentric, and quality underground rock scenes in any small college town in America. You had to be there to know exactly what this writer is talking about, but hopefully someday you'll be able to live through it posthumously through a compilation release. The jury's currently out on that one, but that doesn't stop some of the members of that scene from making incredible new music currently. Heater is a three-piece Columbia super group, if such a thing exists. Heater's guitarist and lead singer, Zach "Zz" McLuckie, used to be a member of CAVE and Sneakers (both have released records on Permanent Records), among others. Heater's bassist / second guitarist, Jeremy "Jerusalem" Freeze also plays guitar in Jerusalem and the Starbaskets and both he and Heater's drummer, Jon "Wujj", formerly jammed together in California Raisins (their only release was a split 10" with CAVE also on Permanent).

Here comes the summer (of pop) here at Permanent Records.

What we have here is the pro-dubbed limited edition cassette tape version of "God and Hair". The LP version is currently in production and should be available within the next couple of months. There are, however, only 100 copies of this limited edition cassette tape and it may never be pressed again. Feel free to preview "Black and Gold" from "God and Hair" on our MySpace page.

The LP version of "God and Hair, along with the Black Math and Brain Idea records currently in production will complete the Permanent Records "Summer of Pop" trifecta, and the upcoming new Cacaw record will completely annihilate it.

Steel Pole Bath Tub put out a bunch of killer records between 1986 and 1996, most of which are long out-of-print. Towards the end of their tenure, SPBT was signed to a major label in the free-for-all signing bonanza of the post-Nirvana years. The second album SPBT recorded in 1996 for their major was deemed "unlistenable" by the suits and went unreleased until 2001, when it came out on CD via Zero to One. So here we are 14 years after the original recording of this incredible record, releasing it on vinyl for the first time. The entire SPBT catalog is great, and is highly recommended to fans of the noise rock released on labels like AmRep and Noiseville, and genre defying bands like Chrome and Melvins, but "Unlistenable" stands out as a stellar document of a weird band at their weirdest, and it's a damn shame it took this long to finally hear it on wax.

Only 100 copies were pressed on white vinyl.  Also, all of the white vinyl copies (and a very limited number of the black vinyl copies) come with a poster and sticker set designed and printed SPBT member Dale Flattum.

Available now here! (black wax, w/ screened poster/stickers edition of 400 [first ~100 still include the extra goods])

White Wax edition of 100 gone.

AVAILABLE FROM PERMANENT AND PLUSTAPES.  Here's the first review:

"While its name conjures images of a 30-strong collective playing everything and the kitchen sink, Montoyan Artisan Connection is actually the solo lysergic eminations of Chicagoan Lance Barresi, a backroom psych traveller of the highest (We're not talking Dr. Who here) order.  Throughout his eponymous debut's 10-track running order, influences like Les Rallizes Denudes and Chrome are apparent, however, they're never pervasive, instead, they seamlessly melt into the backdrop of his acid-fried visions of a future tomorrow.  So, if heady psych trips and narco-pop daymares are your cup of tea, then make sure you prop yourself up in your egg chair with, well, whatever helps enhance your listening pleasure, and drop out with the Montoyan Artisan Connection." - Jason Jackowiak, Impose Magazine

Charles Albright self-released a 7" last year that knocked us out. It obviously had the same effect on Scott Soriano at S-S Records, 'cuz he reissued it on his own label. It's long since sold out and highly sought after. Anyhow, here's Mr. Albright's (not the serial killer, unfortunately) follow-up, a fine 7-song EP. It's a blown-out, lo-fi, catchy punk jammer with loads of hooks and sweet riffs. A couple of the tracks are experimental guitar instrumentals that give you a chance to catch your breath before picking yourself up off the ground to begin pogoing again. Charles is a big fan of Black Flag and if you are too (especially the early stuff), you'll probably dig this slab.

Review of the Charles Albright "I'm On Drugs" 7":
From Terminal Boredom (RK):
"I'm On Drugs" crawls right off the vinyl and comes stumbling through your living room with its impressively over-driven bass, barreling drums, ray-gun guitar solo and zen-like titular mantra. Fulfills the three P's very well: proto, psych, punk. On "I'm A Fine Young Man...", "Charles" ditches the hard drugs and gets hopped up on goofballs or cheap beer or something rock'n'rolly. A standard grade garage gasser. I'd prefer he go back to the hard drugs, which he does for "I Wanna Hold You", a monolithic bass throbber with freak-out guitar splattered all over it. Best cut of the bunch, a real heavy heavy monster sound."

The debut LP by Brainbombs side-project, No Balls, old out immediately upon it's first release on the Swedish "Release the Bats" label.  Here's the much more affordable, domestic pressing of 500 copies on Permanent.  The only difference is the artwork.  Just in case you're not already familiar with Brainbombs, here's a quick overview:

Brainbombs are a legendary Swedish noise rock band that've been putting out records for over two decades.  They essentially drive dumbed-down, Stooges-esque riffs into the ground for 5 minutes, call 'em songs, and continue that way 'til the record is over, single or LP.  Over the top, the vocalist delivers misogynist, creepy, and totally fucked up lyrics, all the while sounding like a serial killer writing his memoirs.  Occasionally, there's some atonal trumpet skronk a la Steve Mackay's sax on "Fun House" in the mix.  It's a simple, effective formula that should be easily replicated.  Many have tried, but very few, if any have succeeded in the way Brainbombs have over the years.  We're huge fans around here and we're honored to be working with these guys.  For those of you already familiar with the Brainbombs MO, here's the deal.  If you like Brainbombs, but you don't particularly care for the vocals, then you'll love this.  If you like the Brainbombs, and the vocals, you'll still love this.  "Come Clean" is brutal, pummeling, repetitive, noise rock at it's finest.  Some folks are already calling it the RECORD OF THE YEAR.  Read on...

Review of the No Balls LP:
From aQuarius Records:
FINALLY! It's here, the first full length from NO BALLS. The new project from TWO of the Brainbombs, and it's just like the 7" (which is sadly now out of print): a noisier, more metal, more stripped down, more mesmerizingly hypnotic, even more fucked up and fractured and RAW, nearly instrumental Brainbombs which means this is fucking AMAZING!!!

If you love the Brainbombs, and how could you NOT, then you'll love this. It's like these guys took unreleased Brainbombs jams and stripped them down to their bare essentials, then dipped them in a boiling cauldron of blown out distortion, hurling them into the void, picking out just a single riff from each track, and looping it, over and over and over, pounding away at that same riff FOREVER, total maximalist minimalism, like some impossible hybrid of Brainbombs, Gore, Black Flag and Lubricated Goat, hypnotic and mesmerizing, filthy and raw, metal AND punk, post everything noise rock, this shit is so fucked up and fierce.

Angular slashing riffage, buried super distorted vocals, but only here and there, some of that old dented BB trumpet bleat pops up every once in a while too, but those elements are practically swallowed whole by the churning black mass of sound that is No Balls, a gloriously sludgey and psychedelic kraut punk doom, mantra like, but also totally rocking, and simultaneously the best and the worst thing that's ever happened to your stereo. And your ears.
Totally ruling, utter sonic destruction, total musical bliss, filthy and fantastically and utterly recommended. Some of us are thinking... RECORD OF THE YEAR. Oh yeah...

We here at Permanent Records couldn't be more delighted to be sharing with you our very first Record Store Day Exclusive release, a split 7" between (the brand new CAVE side-project) Bitchin Bajas and Moon Duo (featuring Wooden Shjips' guitarist Erik "Ripley" Johnson).  CAVE and Wooden Shjips share a lot in common, but their respective side-projects make an even better split pairing.  Each band specializes in minimalist, repetitive, psych that's obviously influenced by Krautrock. however, they differ in that Bitchin Bajas focus on the melodic repetition while Moon Duo is heavier on the rhythm and quite a bit darker.  This is Bitchin Bajas debut release.  Moon Duo has released 3 critically acclaimed records to date. Both tracks on this split are exclusive to this release, which is limited to 750 copies, never to be pressed again.  Happy Record Store Day!

We've distributed all of our wholesale stock, they will be available through: Revolver, Forced Exposure, Carrot Top, Thrill Jockey, Norman, & Forte.

Individual copies available through: Floridas Dying, Love Garden Sounds, & Fusetron

Of course, we'll have our stock for the shop, and the bands will have theirs too.

Thanks!

Expo '70 bass/synth player Matt Hill has gone solo. His debut LP under the Umberto moniker is an analog masterpiece heavily influenced by the classic film score work of Goblin, except arguably better. From the moment you drop the needle, you'll be transported to Italy as an extra in a vintage horror flick directed by Dario Argento. This is some of the most accessible, yet totally authentic sounding music of the "giallo" genre we've ever heard. It was previously only available as a hyper limited edition CDr and cassette tape via Sonic Meditations. NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL IN AN EDITION OF 500 COPIES (100 ON RED VINYL)!

Review of Umberto "From The Grave...":
From aQuarius Records:
"Doubtless many movie (and music) buffs would agree that Italian '70s and '80s "giallo" (horror/thriller) cinema, from directors like Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, had soundtracks usually as evocative and inspirational as any visual aspect of the films, soundtracks which often stand as effective works of art all on their own. The scores by prog band Goblin being perhaps best known, influencing such modern day bands as Zombi and Crime In Choir. Now here's another, utterly blatant and most excellent example of Italian giallo soundtrack worship by a current artist: Umberto! Umberto has a heavily synthesized sound, keyboards buzzing and droning and squelching, crunchily distorted or eerily ethereal, sounding at once like ominous Gothic organ music and also spacey futuristic electronica. Mechanical drumming plods along, propulsive beats adding to the menacing atmosphere. There's also plenty of fat disco synth-bass, and we bet folks into Italians Do It Better 12"s, or Black Devil Disco Club, or even skweee would get a kick out of this too, not just Goblin fanatics... but yeah Goblin fanatics (and John Carpenter and Zombi fans too) REALLY ought to check this out! Very cool, very creepy, and even at times kinda catchy-groovy.. "

Hey Everybody!  Happy New Year!
We imagine most of you are already familiar with Nothing People and their previous releases on S-S and Hozac, but for those of you who aren't, here's the 411:

Nothing People, like Wooden Shjips, are one of our generation's great bands, that doesn't tour much. Unless you live in or around their hometown of Orland, California or you happened to pick up one of their excellent releases on S-S or HoZac, you may not have ever heard of them, but those who have, love them. The critics over at Population Doug and Victim of Time have raved over Nothing People's previous releases saying things like: "psychotic glam-punk for nervous nobodies" and "nothing has never been this necessary." David Keenan of Wire magazine even wrote:

"Nothing People are a West Coast rock group that paradoxically sound like they just teleported in from NYC circa 1975, with a sound that would have sat perfectly on the same bill as Suicide or the New York Dolls at Max's Kansas City. There is a nicely sleazy glam-punk edge to the way they greaze their garage rock sound that reflects on early 70s avant glitter like Victoria Vein & The Thunderpunks, The Twinkeyz and Debris, albeit cut with a weird, dystopian sci-fi edge that is equal parts Chrome, Pere Ubu and early Roxy Music."

Those of you who've been following our updates and year-end best of lists for the past couple of years should already be familiar, at least with the name. We love this band. Anyhow, we're stoked to be announcing the release of a brand new Nothing People 7" on our very own in-house label! This new limited edition 7" contains two brand new Nothing People songs and is housed in a super-deluxe texured glue pocket sleeve with gold foil stamping on the exterior, is the first release featuring former Monoshock member Doug Pearson! We're big fans of Monoshock as well and we couldn't be more delighted by Doug's addition to the Nothing People line-up. This release includes two of their most rockin' numbers to date. Feel free to preview the A-side, Enemy With An Invitation on Nothing People's myspace page if you're not already sold. This one's limited to 100 copies on white vinyl and 500 on black wax.
Why not make this yr first purchase of 2010?

Note:  We understand that this isn't the least expensive single you'll ever buy, but we would like to state for the record that the manufacturing costs on this record and it's beautifully gold-foil stamped packaging we're exceptionally expensive.  We're not trying to gouge anyone, we're simply trying to re-coop our costs on this awesome (looking and sounding) limited edition record.

Purling Hiss is the solo side-project of Michael Polizze. Full-time, Mike is the guitarist in Birds of Maya which released an LP on Holy Mountain a year or so ago that totally ruled. Birds of Maya do full-on psych similar to the way Earthless does it, but maybe more heavily influenced by Cream or Blue Cheer than Hawkwind and Krautrock, and their record was much more lo-fi than "Rhythms From a Cosmic Sky". Apparently, Birds just aren't full-on enough to satisfy Pollize's far-out tendencies. On his debut solo record, Pollize plays bass, drums, and guitar, relentlessly, as if he's playing to save his life. This recording is so intense that the pressing plant told us they'd risk breaking their equipment if they cut the lacquers with the original master. We sent 'em a new master and the result sounds great! The LP contains 6 jams, 3 longer, repetitive, blown-out psych jams, and 3 shorter more experimental noisy pieces. All 6 will blow yr mind. It's one of our releases, so obviously we're gonna recommend it, but Purling Hiss is especially recommended for fans of Birds of Maya, Earthless, Loop, High Rise, Les Rallizes Denudes, and Lo-Fi, Blown-Out Psych. Feel free to preview 3 of the songs from the eponymous Purling Hiss LP at myspace.com/purlinghiss. We pressed a total of 328 copies of this record, of which, 109 were pressed on Grimace Purple vinyl. These colored vinyl copies will be available only directly from us or the band. Once the colored copies are gone, we'll start selling the 219 black copies. Digital download codes are included with each and every one.

New Releases For Sale/Distro Updates / Drunks With Guns Tape
« on: November 16, 2009, 07:36:07 PM »
Just in case you missed our weekly update, we reissued the self-titled LP on cassette last week and it's currently available at PermanentRecordsChicago.com!  Only 100 of these to go around.

Here's the scoop:
Drunks With Guns were a nihilistic, noise rock / dumb punk band from St. Louis in the mid-80s. Their self-titled LP from 1987 included 9 songs worth of Brainbombs-meets-Flipper style punk with titles like "Dick in One Hand...", "Punched in the Head", and "Wonderful Subdivision". Among others, Monty Buckles of the Lamps is a big fan of the DWG and he wrote an excellent article in the last issue of Z-Gun that we definitely recommend reading at some point. Anyhow, we've reissued the Drunks With Guns self-titled LP in an edition of 100 tapes and they're ready for consumption. This tape ain't no bootleg neither. We actually took the time to get in touch with Mike Doskocil, Drunks With Guns' former singer, and got permission for the release.
