(SNIP)
I still need to check out Josey.

I checked out Josey and grabbed The Brood - Hitsville and Compulsive Gamblers - Crystal Gazing Luck Amazing, which I had been looking to find for a long time.  Good store, very nice people.

For future use:  BBQ Rank of Preference
1. Q39
2. Joe's of Kansas City
3. Jack Stack
4. Gates

Didn't get a chance to try JC's or Char Bar or Arthur Bryant.  And I hopefully will get to Half Priced Books next time to look for records, I've heard good things...

For punk venues hit up the Blind Tiger on Main Street www.facebook.com/blindtigerkc
Most of the people that work there are in bands.  Two of the guys from the Wet Ones bartend there.

As for record stores try out Mills www.facebook.com/MillsRecordCompany
They have a good mix of used & new and prices are decent.

Right across the street from Mills is the Riot Room, http://www.theriotroom.com
This venue that has a lot of metal, punk, & rap shows.

There is also Josey Records www.facebook.com/joseyrecordskc
A good selection on new stuff and they have a lot of good used records but tend to be a bit higher price wise.

Revolution Records www.facebook.com/Revolution-Records-Kansas-City-197610503584028/?ref=py_c
Mostly used and prices are all over the map.

This site has a good list of upcoming shows in the area, http://www.shuttlecockmusic.com/p/kansas-city-area-show-list.html

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for this. It helped a good deal.  I really like Revolution Records, it seems like they just bought a pretty solid collection of heavy psych/garage rock stuff and they were putting it out at pretty reasonable prices.  I thought Mills was pretty good, a little wacky when it comes to pricing for condition. It's a Beautiful Day, the smoke shop/record store up the street, was pretty cool, it seemed like they were still pricing records in the 3.99-7.99 range, blissfully unaware of the internet. If I lived around here, I'd check that place regularly, it also seemed like they had some decent gear. I still need to check out Josey.

I ventured into Kansas today and visited Brothers Music, which was okay and then went over to Lawrence for Love Garden, which I thought was pretty excellent.  I cleared out their Gizmos 7 inches and grabbed a stamped STINK off the wall, thanks to my work per diem.

Thanks, that sounds cool.  I'll try to check it out. Any good punk venues?

Hey, Going there in a week for work. Would love recommendations for worthwhile record stores, thrift stores, food or concert venues to check out while I'm there.

Thanks much...

Going to Paris for my first time May 9-16.  Any great shows? Any notable art exhibits? Any record fairs?

Thanks much...

Also of note is the record fair at Spitalfields (1st and 3rd Fridays), which is a bit overwhelming but also had quite a few good deals when I visited.  I'd be curious to get the local's take on this, as I don't really have anything to compare it to.

That's a great tip. I'll be in London on the first Friday and I'll definitely check this out.

Thanks again for the record shopping advice guys.

BUMP.

Going to London next week.  Just wanted to check and see if there's anything new I should check out when I'm there.  I'm also going to be in Cambridge for a night, anything worthwhile there?

Thanks in advance.

Got mine yesterday.  One of my most anticipated albums of 2016 already here.  I hope they do a tour for it.

I love Bowie and I'm glad so many others here seem to have loved him as well.

This scene from Mauvais Sang is magic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt2KlkBUgXA  (2:28 in, if you only want the "Modern Love" part).

I asked the band when they were in Los Angeles in August and they said they haven't started writing the next album yet but seemed to indicate they would start once they were done with the tour.

Music Shit / Re: Secrets For Selling Records

This record store business model (nothing priced) seems like a total anomaly to me STILL, though.  I have only ever encountered one other shop that does this [The Record Man, Redwood City CA].  Please name others!!!

The Record Collector on Melrose is a great example of this.  They have tons of records, weighed heavily towards jazz and classical and a labyrinthine system of organizing their records.  You grab from the owner's henchman and they go up to the owner, who sizes you up and gives a ridiculous price.  If you decide to pass, chances are high that he will yell at you and call you a deadbeat who can't afford to buy his good records.  His yelp reviews are a comedy treasure trove: http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-record-collector-los-angeles
