Music Shit / Re: Thrift Score
« on: September 15, 2012, 04:02:38 PM »
I found this today at a thrift store:

I'm not really sure what this shirt is (tour shirt? homemade shirt? Memphis novelty item?) but I was happy to snap it up for $3.

I've never much liked Cope or Teardrop Explodes and I've tried a few times.  There's not enough Post-Punk in this New Wave.

The owner was holding a NM copy of The Nerves 7" for a customer that decided he didn't want it after all and it was priced at $120

A nice one available for the same price here: http://waxidermy.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=43632

Thanks CollectorScum, I'm waiting for my login to be authorized for waxidermy, I think I'm going to get this and put my soul at ease.

I got a bunch of cool records the last few days:
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus
Beck - Odelay
Chris Knox - Croaker
Felt - Forever Breathes the Lonely Word
The Fall - The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall

However, I can't stop thinking about the one that got away.  I visited a fairly nearby record store that got in a bunch of amazing punk 7" and priced them near the high end of the retail price.  Last time I got a sneak peak through the collection and this time it was all out and priced.  The owner was holding a NM copy of The Nerves 7" for a customer that decided he didn't want it after all and it was priced at $120, which would be the most I've ever spent on a record.  I stared at it for a few minutes before finally passing on it because I just shouldn't be spending that kind of money right now.  I walked around with my girlfriend visiting a few clothing shops for the next hour and finally talked myself into buying it.  When I went back and asked for it, the record store owner told me that he called the guy who had originally put the record on hold and told him there was interest in that The Nerves 7" and the guy freaked out and came down immediately to pick it up in the hour I was away.  I was incredibly bummed out, I would love to own that record.

Pop Punk / Re: Burger Records feature on AllMusic
« on: August 29, 2012, 11:17:30 AM »
Is there a dick in my brain or is everyone missing the obvious?  Burger Records is something worth bitching about for the plain and simple reason that they are STYLE/SUBSTANCE POACHERS.  They invest NOTHING into ANYTHING.  Wow, they put on SHOWS.  BIG DEAL DUMBASSES.  I can PUT ON A SHOW for free too.  I can also release a zillion cassettes a year for $100 for 100 copies.  WHOA MAN, HOW ARE WE GOING TO MAKE THAT $$$$$ BACK?!!!  They bank on labels like me putting out good shit on ACTUAL VINYL and ACTUALLY GIVING A FUCK...ACTUALLY TAKING A RISK...and then they go behind my back (and tons of other labels' backs too) and just swoop in AFTER A BAND GETS POPULAR and asks them directly if THEY WANNA DO A TAPE VERSION ON BURGER.  It's a lame move because it makes the entire substance of "Burger Records" basically being some retarded glorified TAPE COLLECTOR who collects OTHER PEOPLES RELEASES onto a few tapes and then calls themselves a fucking label.  Give me a break.  They MIGHT be changing their "business model" now....now that they've sold 2,500 KING TUFF REISSUED TAPES....but this model I described is pretty much the ESSENCE and the CORE of what the fuck BURGER "RECORDS" (HOLY FUCK, CAN I GET EXTRA QUOTES WITH THAT>>???????!!!) actually was.  I really don't care that someone releases a ton of tapes...but that;s not what this is.  This is straight up taking credit for everyone elses good taste/sense of what the fuck is going on...then paying some measly investment and treating EVERYTHING like a minor task to get done with NO LOVE FOR IT.  Its like a race to get tapes done....like they are little scene cred points.  "Oh cool, got another point for being on top of that trend now!"  TAPES ARE FINE.  JUST FIND YOUR OWN BANDS, RECORD NEW MUSIC, MAKE NEW ART, AND PROMOTE IT YOUR GOD DAMN SELF YOU FUCKING CA FAGGOT LEECHES.

At least this is a hatred for Burger that I understand and I'm glad someone finally stated it but isn't that just them out hustling other labels and finding a niche for themselves and then filling it?  The cassette is clearly the inferior Pabst Blue Ribbon of media but if kids at shows are going to buy it for $5 instead of dropping $12 for the superior vinyl, shouldn't that option be celebrated to some extent for being good for the artist (who is seeing some profits from the tape sales, I assume) and ultimately good for the scene because that kid will eventually have the money to buy your awesome Useless Eaters LPs when the music bug has crawled into the recesses of his/her brain.

Also, I mentioned it earlier but Burger is now doing exclusive vinyl releases too that are pretty strong.  Pangea - Living Dummy, Nobunny - Raw Romance, Lovely Bad Things - EP, Cosmonauts - If You Wanna Die Then I Wanna Die, Natural Child - For the Love of the Game and others that I'm less excited about.  If their business practices of going behind labels backs to put out silly cassette tapes at budget prices allowed them to put out all of these LPs on vinyl, I'm all right with that trade off.

That's Ed, going to the beach with tapes is no way to live.

Worst label. Also the comments are closed, what's up with that?

It's probably not super popular to defend Burger around here but I'll take a stab at it.  I really love Pangea's LIVING DUMMY release that they put out on vinyl last year and I quite like the Lovely Bad Things EP from this year.  I don't really understand the cassette culture but I have picked up a few Burger cassettes over the years that aren't on vinyl (most recently the Gentleman Jesse - SINGLES AND RARITIES) and I'm glad that they are available to me in some format other than digital download.  The Burger dudes are also a pretty unavoidable part of going to shows around Los Angeles and Orange County, they promote a lot of good shows and show up at plenty of other shows that they don't have anything to do with putting on.

I'll watch this later.

I'm really fond of this BBC Arena profile of Eno, I'm not sure how much this one overlaps with that one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DbKAj-e8_I  Especially love the bit where he passively brags about fucking way more chicks than Bryan Ferry.

Found this at a thrift store the other day for $10.  I'm not sure if it's an original or a reproduction but I'm pretty stoked to have it either way.  Gonna get it framed.

Record Collector on Melrose in LA.  The mind reels.
  [SNIP]... Are they still around?

Yes, they are still around.  I went in there a couple of months back after being warned extensively about much of what you mention in your post and I went in with that in mind.  I tried to be as nice as I could to both of the old dudes working there hoping that it might pay off in some reasonable quotes on whatever I found.  His quotes were pretty ridiculously high on several items I asked about (he wanted $100 for the Pino Donaggio score to DON'T LOOK NOW) but I was able to negotiate him down a bit on The Holy Modal Rounders' INDIAN WAR WHOOP he initially asked $40 and I got him to do $30, which is still high for that record but I really wanted it.  He also sold me Wayne Shorter's SPEAK NO EVIL (late 60s Blue Note) for $20, which didn't seem that bad considering the copy was in nice condition.

I probably wouldn't go back there unless there was something jazz that I was really desperate to find but I didn't have as horrifying an experience as most seem to when they visit there.  The stocker dude was really bizarre though, he talked my ear off in the Rock Room about Richard Nixon and German Nazi propaganda.  He seemed happy to be away from the owner for a bit and have somebody half paying attention to his ramblings.

I got the vinyl from the show they played at Wombleton Records in Los Angeles.  They didn't have it when I saw them the previous night at The Echo and apparently they put them together after the Wombleton show and sold out (or nearly sold out) at that show.  They were awesome both nights.  Here are some pictures of my copy...

Music Shit / Re: Recent Acquisitions

I had an amazing day of Garage Sale scores this saturday.

First house:

First house had a small stack of records on a table, including the Sigur Ros and DFA test pressings, I asked how much and he quoted a dollar on each record (but $2 for the Sigur Ros since it was a double).  I asked if he had any more records in the house and he let me in to browse and that's where I found the OG Olivia Tremor Control and the rather beat up but wonderful copy of Exuma's first LP.  All told, I got 8 records and some DFA pins for $15.

Second house:

Second house had three LP bins, one with dollar records (mostly thrift store quality) and then two bins with $5-15 records, where I found some really amazing stuff.  Finding Flying Nun, Nick Cave and Tindersticks stuff at a random local garage sale was pretty mindblowing.  The lady selling the records said she had worked at several record stores over the years and was now broke and trying to get her collection down to 150 records. I ended up leaving her $100 for 15 records.

Third house:

Initially seemed like a bust.  She just had some vintage clothes and random oddities out on her driveway but I noticed a shelf with records in her garage and closer look found a lot of great 80s post-punk, synth stuff.  I bonded with her Magazine and she told me she recently bought REAL LIFE on CD at Amoeba.  I asked her how much and offered to match $12 for the record, she agreed and then I offered to double it for her entire Magazine collection.  She agreed.  When it came time to give me change from my $40, she suggested I find some other stuff.  So I grabbed the Half Japanese, Bauhaus & Kraftwerk.  All of them were in really nice shape and she seemed really happy that they would be going home with someone who would enjoy them.

Amazing scores. I was high the rest of the day.
