But still:

Another paypal wrinkle: the uselessness of paypal protection on cheap overseas records. Just went through this with Vinyl Tap.
Usually reliable, ordered a $15 record from them in a larger order. They blew the grade, record was trashed, it happens. I ask for a partial refund just for the one record, they respond "Send it back." They've got you. Paypal won't process a refund request until you post a tracking number in their system, so that's $13 shipping for a single to Europe plus the $13 for a tracking number so spend $26... to get a $15 refund...yeeeeah. Non-starter.

BOTTOM LINE: you can only get a refund for non-receipt these days. Otherwise the $$ you have to spend to get a refund on a cheaper record does not add up. Pick your sellers online/Discogs carefully, if they are shitty graders you are out of luck. Returning for a refund only makes sense for a $$$ record. Laaaaaaaaaaaaame. But that's the new reality, and the sellers know it. The only leverage you have is if you buy via ebay...and have the threat of negative feedback.

In a similar position right now. Bought a record with a sleeve graded as 'Near Mint'; in actuality totally trashed: ringwear, seam splits, promo hole, spine cracked. I've sent the thing back to the seller but I have a feeling that he'll somehow try and get out of fulfilling the refund.

I think - if one is suspicious of a seller's grading and particularly if it's a pricey record - asking for photos before buying is a must considering paypal's refund policies.

Music Shit / Re: Graham Simpson of Roxy Music

Bracewell's stuff on Roxy Music is primarily focused on the artistic and cultural contexts that led to the band's formation and ends just as the band forms, so I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a basic career overview.

But, as an account of the development of Pop Art in the UK - particularly the role of Richard Hamilton - and of the interplay between revivalism and futurism in UK art/fashion/music scenes of the late sixties and early seventies and how these factors influenced the people that would go on to form Roxy music,  Re-Make/Re-Model is absolutely essential and an extremely worthwhile read.

The Wire (September 2010) ran a really nice interview with him to promote that film:

'In Michael Bracewell's excellent Re-Make/Re-Model, Ferry recalls that Simpson played at a private rehearsal for Island Records with tears streaming down his face. Simpson remembers the occasion: "One of the most incredible experiences of what I can only describe as the impression of a very fantastic beauty, that I felt in my heart, and I couldn't help but weep with emotion at the sensation that I felt all over my body."'

He used the £2000 he received from EG for signing away his involvement in Roxy Music to travel to India where he studied Sufism. Later - attempting to fund a pilgrimage to Mecca - he cracked safes in Morocco before being arrested and repatriated to the UK.

After PR my plan is to start experimenting with something a little more electronic/experimental.

Cool.

Fripp & Eno, Air Structures. Live concert boot from seventyfive, direct from th' Internet. First disc sounds like mostly No Pussyfooting stuff, with a little something from Discreet Music (I think). "Heavenly Music Corporation" turns up the 'sike, whiffs of Ash Ra Tempel, or something. Fannnntastic.

Extremely boss. I wish someone would put out a legit issue of this.

It's Bower and Samantha Davies (from Voltigeurs, Skullflower). Cruder and more diffuse than Sunroof! - the addition of 'Black' to the name makes perfect sense. The LP is called Feral and is on VHF.
