Non-Music Shit / Re: Ben Affleck is the new Batman

Well he replaced Christian Bale in To The Wonder and that's the worst movie I have ever seen so....this should be pretty terrible.

Since part of this is a Michael Shannon thread I also mention the first flick I saw him in, Revolutionary Road. The movie as a whole is mildly terrible, but Shannon is wicked in it. Blows the rest of those chumps out of the water. Makes it worth it alone.

Michael Shannon as Kim fowley was the highlight of that flick

Truth. I think this is the best I've seen him in anything, undoubtedly.

Cities / Re: Things to do in L.A.

Planning on heading to Wurstkuche for lunch tomorrow

This place is the shit, had the duck last time. If you have the time hit the desert place across the street then head to the Last Bookstore on Spring downtown. Cheap records and books in a cool spot.

i have a few friends with library science master's degrees.  they are all stuck doing endless scanning of old documents in windowless basements.  or organizing and reorganizing filing systems.

Are they hiring?

Non-Music Shit / Re: Writing workshops?
« on: June 27, 2013, 08:43:43 AM »
I write fiction and I've been to a few workshops though it's been a decade or so since the last. The only things that really helped me were Ray Bradbury's Zen in the Art of Writing and Dorothea Brande Becoming a Writer. I learned more reading those two texts then some dipshit who isn't a writer telling me about the craft ever taught me.

Music Shit / Re: Thrift Score

My local Goodwill is great for books.  They get frequent deliveries from some central warehouse which includes some very good donations, but the shoppers there are very unsophisticated, so things that would sell in an NYC thrift in less than an hour will sit for days and days.

One of the benefits of living amongst rubes.

Music Shit / Re: ASK A PUNK.........for a loan?

MacKaye also owns the rights to everything he put out. And while Minor Threat and Fugazi aren't selling 10 million copies, they do sell steadily (Insert Steady Diet of Nothing joke here). ALso, aren't Minor Threat t-shirts fashion items now? Wasn't some dipshit like Chloe Sevenichy wearing one around. That would help the wallet. However, 25 million? Seems insane.

From what I understand Dischord and the bands never sold or produced any of those shirts. Any Minor Threat/Fugazi shirt you see is a bootleg. As I heard MacKaye put it, "Miles Davis never sold a t-shirt so why should I."

Non-Music Shit / Re: Top 10 Richest punks

You know you care! The big surprise is Ian MacKaye, worth a whopping $25 million yo!

I don't doubt most of these, but there's no way Davey Havok is worth that much.

I hope that's an alternate universe.

This isn't quite a thrift score, but at my apartment complex there's a share bench where people basically put anything they don't want anymore for others to take. Usually it's crap like seaweed chips, or an old blow dryer, or a telephone chord. This past weekend someone left a Sansui 5500 amp/receiver out there. Thing weighs about 50lbs and really cranks. Quadrophonic sound and all the bells and whistles are good to go. Looks like it gets a few hundred dollars on ebay.

Music Shit / Re: Replacements Reunite...kinda
« on: June 14, 2013, 05:46:39 AM »
I would HOPE the Replacements reunion show would only be bad drunkin horrible cover songs for like an entire hour. Just like they used to do. That would be hilarious.

In a weird way isn't this exactly what it is.

I'd go with Nate K and do it on a record you're willing to let go first. Myself, I've done this multiple times and each time it's worked out just fine.

Good Luck.

I've been reading this board for about a year and a half, and posting for a lot less and I love it. I hope it never goes anywhere. Everyone here seems cool and funny and mostly helpful. I will say that my tastes differ slightly from the overall tone of this board, but it's nice to go to a place where people don't care about the more popular or hipper aspects of music culture and instead just do their own thang.

I wasn't here in the beginning, but I will say nostalgia is a simulacrum that often fools people into the restorative powers of memory. You can't get anything back you can only recall how you felt and try to find that once again for the first time.
