Haram were fucking great tonight. that nog watt-ass guitar is so sick

Not been tuned in to much recently but heard the demo this morning and it's nice, love the guitar tone. Also heard the Drip demo from Philly, what a tape that it.

Mixed Up Records in Otago Lane out in the West End is one of the best. There are a couple of great wee coffee shops around there too. There's an Oxfam Books and Music on Byres Road as well that can be ok. Monorail in Kings Court is worth a look see and if you don't mind digging through a pile of rubbish Missing under Central Station can be alright from time to time. Haven't been out to any bars in Glasgow in ages, had lunch in the Hillhead Book Club which was ok, but trendy for me though (and I felt far too old from all the students walking about). West End is definitely one of the best areas just for wandering about

Music Shit / Re: What record SOLD YOU/corrupted you?
« on: September 25, 2015, 06:01:56 AM »
Like many others growing up in the late 90s it was initially Dookie. Not ground breaking for me now but was a gateway on to other albums. That and Nirvana led to me finding of about older bands although being back in the dial up connection days it was hard to hear much of it in semi rural Scotland. Eventually found copies of Ride the Lightning and Minor Threat's discography CD in a record shop cum tattoo parlour in Ayr when I was about 17. That was the first moment when it meant something, when I connected with the music. Not long after I picked up Mudhoney's March to Fuzz and from there discovered Black Flag and Void amongst much else - much shit was lost to Fix Me and Dehumanized over the following months and years although my more metal inclined mates couldn't deal with Void unfortunately.

A couple of obscure (ish) tracks to check out:

Tyrant - 'Hold Back the Lightning'
Glory Hunter - 'Thoughts of Destiny'
Holocaust - 'Jirmakenyerut'
Angel Witch - 'Angel Witch' (I'm sure you know this one but it's just such a classic for anyone who is unfamiliar with it)

Cities / Re: Iceland
« on: March 05, 2015, 01:24:28 PM »
Was in Iceland last summer (with 20 odd teenagers in tow!!) on an organised tour. The countryside was amazing. I'd love to go back to Reykjavik - even just walking along the front and around the Tjornin (central lake) was amazing. The main shopping street Laugavagur looked pretty cool, lots of independent little shops and it has the Bad Taste/Smekkleysa record shop. Definitely also take time to go and see the Hallgrimmskirkja and go up to the viewing platform. Perlan, the geothermal energy store, also has great views over the city but isn't quite as grand.

As for the interior - we did the Golden Circle type stuff which was all great if you're a geography/geology buff (as a geography teacher I'm firmly in that category): Gullfoss, Thingvellir, Geysir/Strokkur. There are some amazing waterfalls along the SW coast, Seljalandsfoss being one but there are smaller, less known ones that are just as, if not more, amazing to see and walk around. We also went up to a glacier along the coast which for me was the highlight seeing small pro-glacial icebergs calve off. Stayed in a really nice and welcoming farmhouse called Vatnsholt which had quite a few rooms and was in the shadow if Hekla and Katla, two of the larger volcanoes.

And I know it's kinda touristy but the Blue Lagoon was a great way to end our trip - just so surreal to be out doors and be so warm in the water. It is rather pricy but such an experience - a bit like the country itself really.

Hope some of this is useful, the names might be a little off but hopefully they can point you in the right direction. Icelandic is a difficult language to grasp, although being Scottish a few words are pretty similar (oot for out, bairn for kid and such like)

Maybe a bigger region, but anything private press and punk/post punk/synth or weird from Scotland circa 1977-1986 is picked up pronto. Started collecting that way as I thought it would rein in my spending but been digging so much I've found out about numerous bands whose records to for big money so not saved much at all

Great looking collection but I want to be able to flick through my records while listening to whatever I have on, not have to traipse to a cupboard/other room every time I want to browse for the next song. I mean I like things neat and in order but that's just too far.

Non-Music Shit / Re: Django Unchained

I loved that scene as well. Was hilarious in its peddling the minor, everyday, mundane elements of life. Really liked the film in general. There was a review over here in the UK where the reviewer wrote something along the lines of 'for the first 9o minutes Tarantino is making a statement about slavery and the prevalent attitudes in America at the time but undoes all of his good work by having a gruesome, bloody, unnecessary ending'. Like, what did they expect, it's Tarantino - there's going to be lavish blood letting at some point.

Cities / Re: Stockholm record stores

Heading to Stockholm in a couple of weeks and haven't been for a couple of years. Is Trash Palace entered through Nostalgipalatset or is there a separate entrance next door? Also, is the Stadsmission off of Karlbergsvagen any good for post punk/new wave singles?
