Melbourne horror synth heavyweights The Night Terrors return with their new album Spiral Vortex. Featuring the haunting theremin melodies of Miles Brown, plus an orgy of vintage electronics, Spiral Vortex sees the band build upon their post-prog roots to explore a broader universe of warped psychedelia, thunderous dreamscapes and dark cosmic dance.

"After the punk rock slurry that?s been dished about the Australian landscape, we all could use a breather. And this is one heady trip with plenty of room to breathe. A reissue of a 2009 CD, ?Back To Zero? is made up of atmospheric post-rock instrumentals featuring a heavy dose of haunting electronics and Theremin. The Night Terrors could speak to the Tortoise or Godspeed crowd, but they seem steeped in horror film lore and the pulsing Death Waltz / Dagored label soundtracks than either of those outfits. (I must not be too far off; I see they?re doing a stint opening for Goblin). You could literally fly to Melbourne and grip a copy of this LP before I could finish breaking down every track. Kudos to Homeless for stepping out of their piss soaked cardboard box of a house and releasing this epic journey. There?s a song titled ?Existential Revelation In The Circle Pit At Slayer? on here. You should probably buy this just to have that on your shelves." (RSF, Terminal-Boredom)

**************************************************

"Folks you should check out this incredible record by The Night Terrors. It is pretty awesome it's like Bruno Nicolai meets MBV jamming with a gigantic theremin."
(Death Waltz Recording Company)

Merchants on the high-sea of Antipodean negativity and paranoia. Suburban dislocation filtered through corybantic hate. Melbourne?s GENTLEMEN scrawl through 7 tracks of anti-modern thuggery, indebted to a lineage of afflicted Neanderthals. The ugliness of FRANCIS HAROLD, the nihilism of FLIPPER, the obnoxious repetition of STICK MEN WITH RAY GUNS, masticated and spat-out across dog-eared copies of ?MEET MY FRIEND VENOM?. The cult of GENTLEMEN continues with the re-issue of SEX TAPE on HOMELESS.
Dragged kicking and screaming into higher-fidelity by MIKEY YOUNG.

"Ugly rock from Australia. Think FEEDTIME for an old comparison, USELESS CHILDREN or SLICES for a modern one. Chaotic, really dirty and "I Wanna Be A Closer" is my favorite song of the day, though I can't imagine GENTLEMEN would care. And that is why they are awesome." ? MAXIMUM ROCK AND ROLL

?Being a punk band a couple decades ago must?ve been tough.  Being a bummer punk band like Flipper, Stick Men With Rayguns, Drunks With Guns, or feedtime must?ve been even tougher.  GENTLEMEN, along with the Lamps, Shaved Women, Francis Harold and the Holograms, Pissed Jeans, Watery Love, and a half-dozen or so others are admirable.  They make the kind of ugly, bleak noise rock I need in my life.  The kind that?s equally influenced by the aforementioned bands and side two of My War.  I couldn?t tell ya exactly why I wanna hear this kind of music, it?s just in my blood.  What I do know is that my blood boils every time I hear of a new band creating this raw, uncompromising, completely unmarketable kind of rock?n'roll (a key distinction?this is not just noise).  If you put a thermometer under my tongue while I was listening to Sex Tape I surely would?ve shot mercury all over the wall, and that?s not all.  Ok, maybe that?s all.  Regardless, if the name dropping I did in this stupid review got you excited, you?ll climax your mind over this tape.  Someone please press it into vinyl already.  Tapes are so 2010.? ? These will not be enough to go around. Homeless has been inundated by stores wanting to preorder before we've even offered them.

Seemingly spontaneously, the tiny Hobart music scene underwent a radical upheaval in the late 1990s. Not content to slog it out on the local cover band circuit or to court the indie mainstream prevalent on the mainland, young bands like Sea Scouts, 50 Million Clowns, Little Ugly Girls, The Frustrations and The Nation Blue turned inward, channelling the experiences of growing up in an insular outpost of civilisation into an uncompromising din of noise rock that bore little or no resemblance to what was happening anywhere else in the world.

Foremost among this group of restless explorers were THE STICKMEN. Their sound was a dark blend of post-punk rhythms, mutated surf-rock guitar lines and tightly wound nervous energy. Out of nowhere, only a year after the band's formation, their genius burst forth fully formed on their self-titled debut album in 1998. On songs like 'Strangeworld', 'Night' and 'Creep Inside', Guitarist/singer Aldous Kelly conjures a foreboding atmosphere that perfectly reflects the damp, crepuscular ambience of cold winter nights in Hobart. Drummer Ianto Kelly and bassist Luke Osbourne lock into skittish grooves, while Matt Greeves' innovative use of turntables acts both as a rhythmic device and source of unsettling atmospherics.

Their follow-up, Man Made Stars (1999), represents not so much a progression as a consolidation of The Stickmen's vision. Having made tentative forays to Melbourne, where they dazzled small audiences with a bunch of explosive live shows, this album sounds more self-assured, delivering bona-fide classics such as the title track and their signature tune 'City Is Dead'.

In typically uncompromising Tassie style, the band did not see out the end of the year though. Having made their point concisely and definitively, they disbanded to pursue other interests and musical ventures, Aldous eventually relocating to the even bleaker environs of Greymouth, on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island.

That should have been the end of The Stickmen. Unbeknownst to the band though, over the years their legend grew. Enthusiasm was fanned by ex-Hobartians who had achieved a degree of influence in the Australian music scene, such as Mike Noga, drummer of The Drones, and The Nation Blue's Tom Lyngcoln, who released a Stickmen compilation CD, Who Said It Would Be Good?, on his label Solar/Sonar in 2008. The unhoped for occurred in February 2013, when the band reformed to play All Tomorrow's Parties in Melbourne, at the behest of festival co-curators The Drones. It immediately transpired that The Stickmen had lost none of their chemistry or propulsive power, and they made a further surprise appearance at Hobart's Dark MOFO festival in June, being rightly celebrated as local heroes.

It is extremely timely then that HOMELESS RECORDS re-releases both The Stickmen's classic albums. This also marks the first time these recordings, remastered by expert engineer Mikey Young, are available on vinyl. Limited edition of 500 copies each, 150 of which are beautifully hand crafted & silk-screened, the remaining 350 featuring old style ?tip-on? sleeves.

Second album of 2013 for Melbourne's CUNTZ. With Alex Macfarlane (Boomgates, Constant Mongrel) behind the desk yet again and both camps benefitting from being a year older, CUNTZ have produced another thug punk classic in Solid Mates. The debut Aloha, polarised critics mainly due to the band's chosen moniker, and those that didn't get the sardonic humour present missed out on fully enjoying Aloha, although one commenter nailed it when stating "the informed listener can choose to either get it or be put off by the irreverence. Cuntz are dedicated to the hoon, and dedicated to supporting each other in their own respective hoons, and they don?t give a fuck about what anyone thinks about that."

And so, with Solid Mates tucked securely into their pants, CUNTZ are about to embark on their most ambitious project yet with the band undertaking a US tour, commencing September 2013 and includes an appearance at Gonerfest 10 in Memphis, alongside the Cosmic Psychos, Mudhoney, Wreckless Eric, Quintron and Guitar Wolf. Tour includes shows on the East & West Coast of America. You've been warned.

"...these new Australian bands just continue to kick asses and take names. 'Aloha' kicks off with a massive headache, coming off like Flipper and Venom P. Stinger in a head-on collision. Thank god for them."
- RK (Terminal-Boredom)

"It's delightfully maddening and miserable. Imagine an Australian Pissed Jeans, maybe, or these guys' '80s/'90s predecessors Venom P. Stinger (going back further, the Sick Things) on a hard drug binge. Get it if you like your rock ugly and unhappy, but with a sardonic sense of humor."
- (Aquarius Records)

Sewers demo cassette
Brisbane fuckers with a demo tape they recorded in a storage space. Fuck garages. "Human Spray" is some hillbilly-punk shit, like Pogues if they were actually as cool as they looked in 'Straight to Hell' and were actually King Snake Roost and not The Pogues. But the guy still sounds like Shane drunk and singing, but probably with slightly better teeth. Music is surely rooted in the dirt a la feedtime or 3TS, more outback and dusty grime than swamp-n-muck. Excellent songs, with good titles even. "Grease My Chain"?! And it's a fucking hit too. Almost what I hoped Axeman's Jazz would be like. Screeeeeeee and jazz and trudge. "Human Spray"! "Fishing"! That bass player is fishing in some deep holes, I'll tell you what. I like the cut of these guy's jib for sure. "Ugly Party" is just that- a party with ugly broads, very martial and rat-a-tat drums. I don't think the singer is totally shitfaced though, I think he's got a good buzz going where his slurs sound sort of pissed but not unintelligbile. Tasteful slide-screech solo. "Sinkhole" is fucking country with live disco drumming or some shit - which they swerve into a take on "Bitches Fuck Off"....Whoa there fellas, pump the brakes...you don't cover Wallers, just like you don't cover The Fall or The Stooges. You guys got a lot of fucking balls trying that shit. I'll look the other way this time...These guys had a track on the NGL comp that wasn't even half as good as any of the songs on this if I remember right. They have an LP coming out on a label I can't figure out ("that old bastard"?), but it'll fit right in on Homeless next to the Cuntz LP. Some upper deck Aussie shit right here.

Melbourne instrumental heavyweights The Night Terrors offer a mind-melting mix of dark synth magic, thunderous dreamscapes and other-worldly electronica. Featuring the haunting theremin melodies of Miles Brown (student of Russian theremin queen Lydia Kavina), vintage horror synths and a powerhouse rhythm section, The Night Terrors have earned a reputation as one of Australia's most unusual and original acts.

Since the initial release of Back To Zero, The Night Terrors have toured the world with the likes of Hawkwind, Black Mountain, Melt-Banana, Serena Maneesh, and shared the stage with Goblin, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Boris, Bardo Pond, Marc Ribot, Pink Mountaintops, Nick Oliveri, Midnight Juggernauts and HTRK. The band has toured Europe extensively and appeared at international festivals such as VIVID Live (AUS), Polyhymnia (DE), Bracara Extreme Fest (Portugal), Denovali Swingfest (DE), Incubate (NL) and recently composed a 50 minute original piece for the Melbourne Town Hall?s Grand Pipe Organ as part of Melbourne Music Week 2012.

The Night Terrors new full-length album "Spiral Vortex" looms February 2014...

Exo Records is good records. Night Terrors music is good music. TNT has a serious Goblin-vibe happening here. They could easily score a horror film set in American Apparel. I could picture tram-loads of Gentlewomen with the same body shape, clothes, opinions and haircuts walking around the racks in a zombie like state, just tripping on all the offensive colours and price tags. 10/10
VICE Magazine
________________________ ________________

"If you want to play in a rock band without a singer you need musical ideas with the strength to carry the music. The night terrors have got it in spades....tracks from the new album "Back to Zero" are crammed with epic melodies, cinematic textures and and the even odd moment of sunshine. A truly original sound. I bought the album."
AIR Charts
________________________ ________________

I put the CD on when I get home and when it reaches its conclusion, get up and press play again. It's fucking phenomenal. Like the sound track to a video game made in the eighties but set in the future. A game of not just linear laser battles of light ships, but an involved personal account of the struggles endured by a character in just such a setting. A veritable space opera covering love, loss and thrilling light speed chase sequences that is exciting as well as all-enthralling. Don't listen to this album unless you have the time to sit down, absorb and fully enjoy it. The Night Terrors are my new favourite band. Back to Zero is my new favourite CD.
Beat Magazine
________________________ ________________

"The Night Terrors? debut full-length album Back To Zero introduces itself somewhat similarly to one of Goblin?s soundtrack releases or Jean Michel Jarre?s original Oxyg?ne record. Within seconds the listener is transported to a world created entirely by the Melbourne band?s synth, drum, bass and theremin combination ? a place where wolves fly rocket ships protecting helpless planet folk from intergalactic volcanic eruptions (or any arrangement of associated descriptors)...The Night Terrors? Back To Zero is a singularly impressive 66-minute album that should prove to be a success with any audience across the globe. 5/5"

If anybody in Australia has taken over the mantle of revered older players like Rowland S Howard, Kim Salmon and Stu Spasm and added something entirely their own to the mix, it?s them. There have been a number of bands inspired by these artists in recent times, but what The Stabs demonstrate is how important it is to outgrow these influences and develop a style entirely their own. As such, Bad Seed Mick Harvey?s choice to invite The Stabs to play ATP was an inspired one that cements their place as one of our most extraordinary and potent bands.

The entire proceeds of 'K-85' go towards the Letha Rodman Melchior fund and her 2+ year battle with cancer. In January 2011, Letha was diagnosed with cancer and since then she's been in a pretty hard fight, requiring some operations and much treatment. She's been unable to work. Dan's role as her caretaker has taken him out of the work force. Letha has basic medical insurance but that really doesn't mean a whole lot in the USA. Debt is piling up. And the state that they live in, North Carolina, doesn't offer much in the way of aid. Dan and Letha need our help:

Reviews:

CUNTZ - ALOHA LP (Homeless)
Second release on Homeless records after Bits Of Shit's debut full lenght and it's yet another winner record. Hailing from Melbourne Cuntz merge sludge with dissonant noise-rock and 70s punk. Many current bands play a simular brand of music, but Cuntz unique and authentic style set themself apart from the common noise punk. "Aloha" is characterised by it's sheer ugliness without a spark of hope both lyricaly and musicaly. Massive drum beats, that sometimes seem to break together are paired with powerful bass lines and a excellent mixture of straight blasting punk guitar riffs and manic squeaking. In some songs they also use alien-sounding synth-parts, making it even more weird. The super harsh vocals are modified with reverbs. They sound like they were recorded in cold echo cave. Of course Flipper are a obvious reference. Even if currently everything noisy seems to be compared with Flipper it's appropiate here. Add some Jesus Lizard like noise-rock and classic Aussie punk vibe in the vein of X and Psycho Surgeons and you might get a idea, how great this record is!

I'll say it for the hundredth time: these new Australian bands just continue to kick asses and take names. 'Aloha' kicks off 2013 with a massive headache, coming off like Flipper and Venom P. Stinger in a head-on collision. Pick up the pieces and glue them back together haphazardly and you get this. "Homeless" is not a dedication to their label, but about the actual homeless. And eating ice cream. They are truly delving into the seedy side here. Songs about meth, bums, alcholism, gambling and other filthy vices. I was sure this band were a bunch of grizzled veterans, but from what I've gleaned they're a bunch of young up-n-cummers, a new wave of Aussie muckers rolling about in the dirt. Thank god for them. There are plenty of throbbing basslines here, a rhythmm machine that operates at two speeds: steamroller and tank. The vox are a treat, as the fella sounds like a nutter, spitting out his tales from the wrong side of the tracks like a forceful drunk conversationalist - staring direct in your eyes and talking AT you, not to you, and certainly not allowing you to get any words in edgewise. They're not just head-down pummelers though, these guys have some finesse, some clever post-punky tricks, a devious Fall-like twist of the shiv here and there. "Lost" slips in an electrified keyboard bleat while this guy puts a new twist on the David Yow lyrical approach. This melts into "Meth", which pastes together a sticky synth-line and pointy guitar. Really seasick in a way that truly does recall Flipper. "Hip Hop" comes up with another incredible synth sound (or is that a fucking guitar?!) that I believe they stole from a Tubeway Army record and repurpose here for ultimate rhythmic hypnosis while this guy mumbles his lines like he has dementia. "Punt" is ground-in-the-dirt pound with a touching AC/DC tribute. As I've said already, the singer does a good thing by using Yow's stylish cadence/ramble for his delivery but not adopting the actual singing voice (if that makes any sense). At this point in the record you'll feel as if you need a punch in the face, and "Hoonin'" delivers it. "Mum" is a monolith that sounds like heavy mining equipment operating in a massive cavern a few leagues under sea level, very dangerously close to the earth's crust. They end the record on a pleasant note, which I'll leave you to discover on your own. Just a massive, massive record, and one of a very few (if any at all) that are deserving of the Venom P. Stinger namedrop. Scum stats: painfully limited to 300 copies, but I've heard rumors of a repress...(RK) terminal-boredom

CUNTZ are from Melbourne -- a punk band in the tradition of the best Australian punk bands. Simplicity is the aim of the game. Riffs of abrasion, akin to the earliest work of the Victims or Venom P. Stinger. Lyrical starls/mumbles similar to Mark E had he not been a midnight rambler. CUNTZ offer a refreshing take on the "gutter rock" that has permeated the Australian underground in recent years.
