Non-Music Shit / Re: HOUSE SHOWS
« on: March 10, 2009, 08:49:16 PM »
My house show rules:

- ALWAYS have somebody at the door (take money, keep people out of the front yard, and act as lookout)
- have a responsible person in the show taking care of sound and things in general
- definitely consider end-time (in Toronto 11pm is usually when you start to get noise complaints)

and all of Rick's suggestions are worthwhile

I need to start taking this advice.  I think anyone who's been to my house (not my house, but might as well be) in Seattle will agree it's a fucking amazing place to host shows, but every time we go past 11 now we get the cops.  Stupid fucking assholes hang out outside and yell instead of getting their asses inside the soundproofed barn.

Only got one, but it's from this guy:

http://www.yourmeatismine.com/

Took nine hours in one day.  It's my favorite thing ever--it's so perfect for me, in fact, that I couldn't imagine getting another one.  I feel like it would just diminish the one I have.

Yeah, whatever.  The music's there, and the dudes have to be real assholes to make me enjoy that less.  Doesn't the dude from Black Time do the sunglasses on stage thing, too?  It's just one of those things.

It should also be noted that James Gunn is the fucking man, and anyone who saw slither can back me up on this.  Dude went from writing Troma movies to the fucking Scooby Doo movie and then back to gross-out horror.  That's a career path I can get behind.

a girl walked into my apartment during the net-rape scene of hanzo the razor once when i was watching it alone.  AWKWARD.

I fucking love the Hanzo movies but I learned the hard way they're not easy to recommend to others.  King Boxer AKA 5 Fingers of Death is a personal favorite.  Seconding Riki-Oh and MOTFG recommendations earlier.

Seriously, Ratatouille!  So good.  It'll be great to watch it with my kid a couple of years from now.

Can I use this as a pixar-segue into talking about how fucking awful the Incredibles was?  I hope my kid never sees that goddamn piece of trash.  It had the exact opposite theme of ratatouille.  Instead of "everyone can do it," it was "there are some people who are just better than the rest of us and you should get out of their way and let them do their thing."  I didn't know Ayn Rand wrote pixar movies.

And it was from the same guy who did the glorious Iron Giant, one of the best kids movies of the past 20 years.  A total disappointment.

Babe: Pig In The City
LA Confidential
Wall-E
The Frighteners
Casino Royale
Slither
Kung Fu Hustle
Saving Pvt Ryan

dark knight was good except for bale's performance

Slither is so fucking good--but we're getting a little off the "modern hollywood blockbusters" thing.  I liked Hancock quite a bit.  I do think that Paul Verhoeven fucking rules, and I wait with baited breath for his next science fiction movie.  On top of that, I think the greatest modern blockbuster director has to be James Cameron, Titanic or no Titanic.  Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2, the Abyss--dude made some of the greatest mainstream science fiction movies ever, period.  And think back on it, how often do you see original sci-fi IP hit the big screen?  It's almost always a book or a comic or TV or something first.  I'm really failing to see ways in which Avatar could be anything but mind-blowing.

Steven Spielberg, on the other hand, has lost it.  Guy can still shoot a good scene, but he has lost all sense of structure and, to be honest, common sense.  Pockets of War of the Worlds were good.  Munich was good up until he started pounding your head in with the message of the movie using flashbacks as a fucking sledgehammer.  What happened to the guy who directed Close Encounters?

Great Divide from Colorado, everything they make is great.
Also Oskar Blues from Colorado, super fucking expensive imperial beers with like 10% alcohol that come in cans.  Really, really, really good.  My favorite scotch ale.  And it comes in a can!

best in norcal: russian river brewing co. in santa rosa

Amen, brother.  http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/863/7971/ is the best beer around, right now.  Period.  If you like IPAs at ALL, try it and you'll agree.

I still would like to some day officially release that song we pissed away on that japanese comp, and there were some other things we recorded that didn't see the light of day.

I was always impressed with Patrone's lyrics too.

My friend johnny showed me some pics he took of one of the shows we played at in Seattle... I think it was us, a frames and the pulses... it was funny to look at who was in the background of those pics. People I didn't know then but know now, like the Coolouts dudes and some other people.

Playing after the Tyrades was always akward. The first time we saw them when they came to Sacramento was like, "woah, what the fuck is this?!?!" Damn good band.

Yeah, I've got that comp, that's a great song.  One of like two or three on there.

I'm going to see them on Sunday in Detroit.  I like Tom Goes to the Mayor a slight bit better...but I still love Awesome Show.  However, I can see why people hate them, and am actually shocked they are popular as they are.

Agreed, it's amazing that this has become that widespread.  I won't judge anyone who doesn't find this entertaining in the least, but I still treasure it myself.
