Non-Music Shit / Re: Movies I've been watching

Yeah, I was disappointed. I thought the premise of The Lobster was great, so I ignored numerous negative reviews that harped on its annoying stylistic quirks. The impassiveness and awkward action worked well in some scenes (especially the ones with the fuck-maids!), but mostly it just seemed like a conceit. It was like the director'd seen a few Robert Bresson films and said "Hey, I like this actors-not-acting shit!" and decided to appropriate it without bothering to figure out what Bresson was doing, or why. Maybe there's no link whatsoever, but ya know, some people have to blame Henry James or Gert Stein for every run-on sentence they see, and I might be one of those people. True, the sex/romance industrial complex isn't a far cry, but there's probably a movie out there that says it better. The last four minutes were pretty good, though.

The Ear is on Hulu right now with English subtitles. (I've upped my movie-watching quota recently 'cause I read somewhere that Criterion's launching their own subscription streaming site in the near future.)

Watched The Ear (Karel Kachyna) a few weeks ago, and I loved it. Paranoia almost replaces gravity as the force that keeps feet on the ground. The tension kicks in almost immediately and doesn't let up, except for one brief reprieve that's almost terrible; a sudden comic rupture of the movie's tense skin. It's impossible to decide whether to take the incident at face value, though, and ditto for the ending. Incredible film.

I also saw The Lobster. Thought it was terrible.

Love this one, and haven't listened in a while. I think it's an album often slept on from their catalog, with some of the best guitar sounds they've ever gotten.

Agreed; I think Will Sergeant's such an underrated guitarist. Those riffs aren't Guitar Center Playable (tm) because he's playing off the rest of the band most of the time, adding precision vamp or needle or clang where it's needed. (He's kinda like Andy Gill that way, or the dude from Dog Faced Hermans - fitting his playing around the song, diving in/out in fits/starts.) Seriously, in all my Guitar Center years, I've never heard a single yutz try to play "The Cutter", and I think that's a good reason why. And speaking of "Cutter", maybe it's all the garbage I inject directly into my tympanic membranes on a daily basis, but the synth ride at the end of that song makes it sound like the theme to the 1984 Trenchcoat Olympics, the thought of which gave me a moment's vacillation as to whether that was a good thing or not. (Don't worry, it is.)

Uncertain, but Heaven Up Here might be replacing (as I speak! right now!) Crocodiles as my favorite Echo/Bunnymen rec. Ramped-up atmospherics, Carpenter-esque synth stabs, DeFreitas is still pocket as fuck. Will Sergeant's really good at not showing off. Is there a drum machine on some of these? I can't even tell. A "big"-sounding record that also doesn't sound like it was recorded in a grain silo, which is nice, as much as I like Disintegration. "Over The Wall" is a perfect song.

Always erred on the side of liking their radio singles (though "Can't Fight This Feeling" is still a load of crap). That first clip is Deep Purple-esque.
