Sorry Ma is a damn good record, but it ain't punk. Neither's the band. Sure, they were loud, juvenile, drunk, fast and sloppy (initially, at least), so if you buy the "punk-as-attitude" argument, then it must make sense to throw 'em into the bag. Platonically punk, maybe. A borderline case: epistemic vagueness at the intersection of p-rock and rock qua. I always had the impression that their putative "punk" songs were parodies of punk songs - that they were sending up what they saw as the witless sturm-und-drang of their contemporaries by spoofing it in two-minute squalls of adenoidal disdain. Stinson's shredding is the handy giveaway, but beyond that, even in loud-fast-rules mode, they've got more in common with the basics of amped-up blue-collar American r-n-r than the velocity of, say, The Damned.
