Upcoming Shows/Tours/Events / Re: D-E-V-O THURSDAY 6/19 nyc
« on: June 24, 2014, 11:11:57 PM »
There was apparently a 15 minute standing ovation at the end of the CO show and they came out again and post-encored with Mongoloid. Other than that, the sets seem pretty much identical.
Dammit!  I was there but left after 10 minutes or so because I figured they wouldn't be coming out again.  The show was standing-room only, so everyone was standing anyway, but they chanted "DEVO" for a while, and after that died down and some lights were flipped on I took off.

I enjoy Eartha Kitt's cover of "Wear your love like heaven" more than the original:

I'm not a Donovan expert at all, but some songs I like are: Circus of Sour, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Hi it's been a long time, Jennifer Juniper, Young Girl Blues, Season of the Witch, Mellow Yellow, What a beautiful creature you are.

I listened to Space Ritual for three days straight in my car. Trying to decide if I want to make the trek to see Nik Turner on Saturday. Orgone Accumulator is such a killer song. What an amazing band.

Definitely go.  It was awesome - sounded great and great visually as well.  They played Orgone Accumulator when I saw them.

Night Nurses - Let's Not Date (2013)
(streaming from http://nightnurses4.bandcamp.com/)

Rather good minimal post-punk.  I like the bass sound a lot.

Music Shit / Re: Yo! How about favorite punk DISS TRACKS?

Muffs vs. Red Aunts: "you, right in the" = "you, Wright, in the". Subtle, but the back cover photo makes it obvious.
This piqued my curiosity, and although I don't know much about the Red Aunts, it appears no one with the name "Wright" was in that band.  Also, they didn't release any material until after that Muffs single had already been released?  so... are you thinking of a different band? or care to explain further?   just wondering.

Thee Headcoats - "We hate the fucking NME" (lists lots of bands)
Wild Billy Childish and the MBEs - "Bugger the Buffs" (more ranting disses)
Your Mother - "Color Me Badd Religion" (Bad Religion parody/diss)

2.  I have found that a pretty simple way to divide up tracks from vinyl playing
is to boot up audacity and set the sound levels - then record a whole LP side
with Audacity.  Then go back through the file and find the gaps between each song
and cut and paste each track to a new audacity file (open a 2nd Audacity file
by clicking on "New")  and then either save as a WAV file
(my preference) or save as an mp3.  You actually have several choices with
Audacity, but I always choose Wav files.  Just cut and paste like you would
     with any text document.

In Audacity, instead of copying and pasting the separate songs, you can click at the beginning of each song and go to Track->Add Label At Selection, and then just type the track number and/or song name if you want, and then when you're finished labeling each song, click on File->Export Multiple, and you can select Split files based on labels, and use the label names or number them consecutively.  Then hit Export and it saves all the songs at once (splits them up into separate mp3s/wavs).  It also preserves the exact same spacing/silence between songs as on the record if you listen to all the tracks consecutively.

Music Shit / Re: Building a synthesizer

robot (and revmutt) - how much $$$ did your setup set you back?  With a quick ebay search it looks like it's hard to do anything with less than $1500, which is way out of my budget

First of all if one is using modular synths you buy one part at a time so it's more a question of budgeting and patience. Second, vintage is going to be more expensive and with all the amazing new companies around you don't need to bother.

Yeah I don't care about vintage equipment - just thought the prices I saw were perhaps "vintage" and was wondering what the non-vintage price range was for the minimum number of parts to do anything interesting.  Anyway, I'll have to do some reading at the basic level to figure out even what I want to get, so maybe I'll come back when I'm more informed.

robot I dig your track - cool sounds.  I also would like to get into modular synths, but have no idea what I'm doing or how any of this stuff works. I do know how to solder (poorly) though.

Thanks for that link revmutt - seems like a good resource to start with, although it's a bit overwhelming.  I guess I need to do some reading. This seems like a good place to start: http://wiki.muffwiggler.com/wiki/Main_Page

robot (and revmutt) - how much $$$ did your setup set you back?  With a quick ebay search it looks like it's hard to do anything with less than $1500, which is way out of my budget, but I'm not sure if that's because the auctions are for vintage equipment or what.  If you buy the electrical components and hook it all up yourself how much can you expect to spend to get the basics?

I obviously have no idea what I'm talking about, but feel free to give any tips, pitfalls to avoid, etc.  Post some more sounds too - good stuff.
