Rikk Agnew, All By Myself LP - Great all the way through, though I kinda hate how "Everyday" is the song that gets stuck in my head after listening to it. "OC Life" is a killer opening track.

Thee Open Sex, s/t LP - Got a chance to see this group a few weeks back - wrecked my bike on the way home. Somehow that didn't break the LP I bought from 'em and that's a lucky thing. I didn't think much of it at first but the live show + repeated spins post-show did the trick. Maybe you have to be drinking Point Pale Ale and cleaning your wounds to really feel it. Rock 'n roll that sounds like it belongs in the late '60s, done without any bells or whistles. Good stuff.

Andy Stott, Luxury Problems 2xLP - I fell head over heels for this record, and now I've cooled off on it. Maybe my system sucks. My brother caught him at some festival in Finland this summer and said it was the sweatiest show he's ever been to - no word on how it sounded, though. I'll hold onto it for now but it seems that Passed Me By and We Stay Together have yet to be topped.

Gonna spin that Boom & the Legion of Doom Detroit LP I got in the mail from eBay today. Thanks to Richie for the heads up! Now I need to track down the EPs...

Two of the dudes (drummer and guitarist/vocalist, I think) in Bbigpigg used to be in a band called the Drayton Sawyer Gang. They played a number of R O W D Y house shows in Alfred, NY when I was at Alfred University, including one at my former place there. I was similarly floored by 'em. I think I have everything they recorded if people are interested. I haven't dug into Bbigpigg too much but the songs I have heard are in the same vein as Drayton Sawyer Gang, which in my mind is a good thing.

Eagles. Always a wild card but setting myself up for disappointment. I'm not sure the huge gaps in the offensive line and the secondary have been adequately filled. Plus, you know, Mike Vick... ugh. Just win like, 6 games, OK?

^ Really not smart to include a picture of the download card.

Why? People do it all the time.

Dunno, kinda seems like someone might use it without buying the item. That might upset the actual buyer and turn into a headache for the seller. But maybe that doesn't happen.

Crystal Stilts, In Love With Oblivion LP - I've been listening to this steadily for the past year or so now, and I found a $10ppd copy of the LP on eBay last week so I finally own it. Saw this band in 2008 in Baltimore with Vivian Girls, Witch Hats and Pygmy Lush and thought they were just fine and then kinda forgot about 'em. I should've kept paying attention, because I love this record. It's a very woozy, hazy, "druggy" (if you must) record, though it's a lot more interesting than the debut. The longer tracks ("Alien River," "Sycamore Tree") hit all the psychedelic buttons but it's in the short tracks where they really shine. I think JB Townsend is one of the better guitarists in modern indie rock - nothin' flashy about him but he's solid, keeps things very pared down. I'm pretty excited for the new album next month.

Silk Flowers, Ltd. Form LP - I get a lot of guff from my girlfriend for listening to this band and that first Daughn Gibson record - she calls it "vampire music" and in particular compared this record to the soundtrack to Castlevania. Oof. This remains one of my favorite modern records. These guys were smart enough to keep vocals away most of the time, and when they used them they were surprisingly human - in as far as that deep voice can be. I guess I mean the lyrics were not forcibly abstract or something. It's a well-paced record and it breeze through its 30 minutes extra quick. Pretty great cover art, too.

2 Chainz Pandora radio - I think it's the strangest thing that 2 Chainz and Future are two of the biggest hip hop artists in the world right now. I always end up with 2 Chainz "Spend It" and Future's "Turn On the Lights" in my head after listening to this. I also really like that "Beez In the Trap" song by Nicki Minaj. It's one verse too long but that beat is hard to deny. Nothin' smart or even really clever about any of the lyrics in any song that comes up on this station, and that's the appeal.

Music Shit / Re: Best & Worst Distros/Labels
« on: August 13, 2013, 07:27:22 AM »
Best distros (probably all of 'em already mentioned):
Permanent
Fusetron
Little Big Chief
Sorry State - though often the packaging is less than satisfactory. I'd say 3 out of every 5 12" records I get from him have seam splits. But I keep ordering so whatever. Not a distro for the fussy.
Iron Lung - pretty great label, too.
20 Buck Spin
Gilead Media
Weirdo Records
Amoeba Records - I've had good luck finding out-of-print LPs in their online store. Free shipping in the US and safe packaging to boot.

Worst distros:
Katorga Works - I mean, actually Adam is fine but he just takes for-fucking-ever to mail anything out.
Video Disease - same as above.
16oh - been waiting since May for a record, keep getting excuse after excuse.
Pesanta Urfolk - the guy carries a lot of garbage in his distro (petty, I know) and he takes about 4-6 weeks to mail anything out. Guess that's what I get for listening to Ash Borer and Hell! He does have the best packaging of any place I've ever ordered from, though.
Broken Limbs - took about 6 months and endless emails to get a record I ordered from them once. "We sent it out today!" followed by nothing in the mail for a month, then another "Oh sorry, must've been a mix-up, I dropped it in the mail today," and repeat.

Pop. 1280, Imps of Perversion LP - I've always liked this band, and I think they really found their footing on last year's The Horror. I think this new one, while a bit uneven, might be a hair better. Songs like "Nailhouse" and both parts of "Human Probe" are some of the best I've heard this year.

Royal Headache, "Stand and Stare" b/w "Give It All to Me" 7" - They're both good tracks, but isn't "Stand and Stare" basically the same as their own "Down the Lane"? I think so.

Urinals, Negative Capability 2xLP - Very glad to have this on wax. Playing one side of an LP > playing three 7" records. The live tracks are the real reason to get this, though. I always loved the live take on "Hologram" myself. "Male Masturbation" is another favorite track. A job well done all around by In the Red.

Lycus, Tempest LP - http://listen.20buckspin.com/album/tempest - I haven't listened to much metal this year, aside from a handful of records: LPs by Primitive Man and KEN mode, Ash Borer's Bloodlands 12" and the Body's EP. This new LP by Lycus might just get me back into it. Really excellent, fluid doom metal, not unlike LPs last year by Samothrace and Anhedonist. Lots of twists and turns that make the record's 40 minutes fly by, which is rare for the genre. No hokey spoken word bullshit, either. A real winner right here.

I was listening to Rubba Band Business 2 and Blue Dream and Lean a ton last summer. Not many people can make almost 30 track mixtapes that are listenable the whole way through. Here's hoping his new stuff doesn't have too many (or any) Wiz Khalifa guest spots.

I guess that's not strictly "classical" music though.

I can't add much, but when I took a "Music Appreciation" class my senior year of undergraduate, I was exposed to Krzysztof Penderecki's "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima," which floored me.

Received my copy yesterday. Really stoked that this exists on vinyl now. Sounds great, and the price is right - pull the trigger, people!

Hoo boy. Guess I'll go eat worms! Only been here a few months, so my apologies for missing the discussion.

It was reviewed (favorably) by yours truly for this rag.

Saw several very positive review for it, actually. Considering the small pressing, limited functionality of the band and general outsider vibes in general, I'd say it was a resounding success.

Will be looking this review up shortly.

Shut the fuck up, aleatorick.  TB practically invented that record.

That's the ticket!

Modra, The Line For the Men's Room LP - Seemingly everyone except Matt at Yellow Green Red missed this record last year (myself included). That's a shame, because it's a fascinating and unsettling listen all the way through. There's a throbbing bass line in "The Restless Dream" (I think... might be "She's Too Big") that had me making sure my doors were locked last night. The record just kind of oozes, moving slowly but staying put when it makes its way somewhere. It's really somethin' else. I was inspired to listen to it because I was streaming that Cured Pink 7" yesterday and it's got the same aura about it.

Charlie Tweddle, The Midnite Plowboy LP - Never knew about this record until the thread in "New Releases" was bumped to the top. Played it about 5 times in the two days I've owned it. Singer-songwriters are generally a hard sell for me, but this is a great full-band recording. Charlie seems like a man full of wisdom; mistakes are made and then ya move on. It's a heartbreaking record but the melancholy is natural and not oppressive or forced. You might say that it feels like a classic.

Los Saicos, ¡Demolición! The Complete Recordings LP - Excellent record. Pretty wild and extremely fun music. I am living with roommates for the first time in 4 years and right now this is my go-to record when they're around. A tasteful crowd pleaser.
