The Native Cats,
Dallas LP -
http://thenativecats.bandcamp.com/album/dallas - I can't say why exactly this record is their best after only a handful of listens, but I really believe it is. There's a lot of good stuff going on: the quiet opening tracks, the rave-up "Cavalier," the excellent closing combo... man, that 12-minute track at the end is just the best. Native Cats fanboy for life. Gripped a copy from Goner yesterday, but they seem to be out now.
Yi,
Punk Memories 7" - I have this band's first 7" and I only remembered it sounding a little like
I Was Born at Night-era Meneguar. Time to revisit it. This new 7" is a killer, albeit a sloppy, kinda drunk one. That B-side is somethin' else. Punkers take note!
Hank Williams,
Lovesick Blues: August 1947-December 1948 2xLP - grabbed this one from Indoorsman a bit ago. I went into this cold, but I've got a lot of friends that worship at the altar of Williams so I figured why not. It was a good purchase, a nice retrospective to get my toes wet.
Ooga Boogas, s/t LP - Lukewarm reception be damned! This is a pretty solid album. Sure, different from the excellent first LP, maybe a little corny at times, but I also can't stop playing it so who's to say? The Yellow Green Red review kind of nailed it with the "infiltrated by 80's coke-rock" bit, but it's actually much better than that makes it sound.
Daughn Gibson,
Me Moan LP - Loved
All Hell, do not love this one. An increase in recording budget leads to... "Kissin' on the Blacktop." No thanks. Some interesting ideas but nothin' grabs me quite like the Dull Knife 7" or the entirety of the debut.
