I like the new ones from Lycus and Mizmor a lot. Need to seek out that new Blood Incantation.

Generally love anything the Body puts out, so their 2xLP on Thrill Jockey and the collaborative LP with Full of Hell are up there for me.

Spectral Voice/Phrenelith 7" is pretty good.

Buried at Sea, Migration 2xLP reissue is worth hunting down.

I'm sure this will get passed over but fuck it.  I think Bradx was the first to actually post about these dudes.  Green Bay Hardcore High Schoolers https://georgesbush.bandcamp.com/  Smokes most art school drop out losers on either coast.  Is it original?  Not really but who can argue some dumbfucks from GB still in HS?

My brother turned me on to these guys. I like 'em.

Recent Alienation 7" is neck-and-neck with the In School 7" for my favorite of the year: http://alienation902.bandcamp.com/album/2016-ep

As far as the age thing goes...I'm talking about trap exclusively not rap....there's a difference.  If you were to go to a Young Thug or Yachty or Kodak show, it's gonna be mostly 18-22.  there's nothin wrong with that, it's kids music...  that's their lane.

Isn't the age demographic largely 18-22 at any given show for any contemporary artist?

it just doesn't do anything for me personally and it just sounds as boring as dudes trying to have symphony orchestras and violins on the track.  Thug just sounds like a poor man's version of Young Money era Wayne....he's not terrible but then again I just don't see what's interesting about him or dudes like him.  The tracks aren't bangers, usually has non-memorable hooks, at least stuff like drill has that punk-esque energy to it.

That is completely fine and I understand, but do not agree with, your stance. I think we look for different things in rap music.

You missed my point about the not being able to understand them.

No, I didn't. Vocals can be an instrument in any genre. Dunno why there's a different standard for rap, especially coming from someone who seems to value production/beats more than lyrics anyway.

but hey if you dig it, that's cool.

Thanks!

Badaboum, s/t LP - Finally got this a few weeks ago. Bruit Direct is a label I really respect, something that took me way too long to realize. All female trio makes monster movie post-punk. A lot of it slipped by unnoticed the first time around (aside from the lumbering opener "Chamois Du Mal") but it's starting to sink its teeth in on repeated listens.

Afflicted Man, I'm Off Me 'Ead LP - I was going to try and do this stupid thing where I listen to all of my LPs alphabetically and weed out the bad ones, dropping 'em off at a shop to make my upcoming move a tiny bit easier. This is the "first" record. That experiment only lasted maybe two nights. I like this record a lot and will not be getting rid of it, something I knew before putting it on. The end.

Perverts Again, Our Big Party LP - Silly/slightly dark/catchy stuff from Clevo that gets better on every listen. This is kinda what I wish Ausmuteants sounded like. Pay-what-you-want download here: https://pervertsagain.bandcamp.com/album/our-big-party

Dark Matter, s/t LP - Top favorite Siltbreeze release of the last couple of years.

Bloated?  I dunno, I see hip hop as more than the McDonalds happy meal music I guess.  Stuff like Kodac Black and Young Thug just suck.  Everything doesn't have to be a grand production or super lyrical but a lot of the newer kiddie stuff that ppl(especially white ppl) flip over just isnt good.  It's not memorable at all, dudes aren't even speaking English.  The whole trap style is played out.  I appreciate minimalism but a lot of the production is so spare.....it's like watching white paint dry on a wall.  I get the fact that everyone doesn't want to hear jazz trumpet or a million layered samples but damn...I swear it's like they do a raffle and pick a random dude off the street, give him some random Metro copycat beats and try to build the next trap star.  Then again, I'm 34 and that stuff is meant for teenagers

I'll stick with Ferg and the Awful Records roster if I wanna hear some trap related stuff.

I just don't get the appeal.  It's not even catchy.  Hell I can get into some Rich Homie or Trinidad, I like ignorant shit too but at least those dudes are making catchy disposable music with some hooks not just mumbling and squeaks and squawks over a boring basic ass trap beat

Can't stand the "Can't understand what he's saying!" business. It's a convenient and ultimately silly argument against rap.

Overproduced is kinda what I mean by "bloated." It's sorta interesting that rap is reaching out into other genres, but longer tracks/guitar or horn solos/whatever does not guarantee a superior end product. I blame Kanye for that (yeah, put Bon Iver on that song, that'll sound good!). I like Q, which is why I'm frustrated with this record; I just think he gets lost on Blank Face trying to be something he's not (that something = Kendrick). It's really hard to make a rap song interesting for 7 minutes (let alone an album for 60+ minutes) and not a lot of people can pull it off. Most rappers don't.

I think, if I were to define the McDonald's Happy Meal of Rap, it would be more like Travis Scott or Wiz Khalifa. The other trap stuff that soars to popularity overnight is kinda like the White Castle of Rap (looking at you, O.T. Genasis) - it's disposable and it's fun (sometimes) and it's not really trying to be anything else. But, I wouldn't go as far as dismissing everything that garners a tiny bit of praise. I think rappers like Kodak Black and Young Thug are good/great because they are so honest - a lot of times it sounds like these guys are rapping for their lives, and close listening to the lyrics reveals something a lot more engaging than bars about cars, jewelry, drugs, guns, etc. It's true that each has some "trap" songs in their ouevre, but these aren't the memorable ones. Shit, I wouldn't even argue that 50% of their output is good (a statistic not unusual for any artist in any genre).

In short: 34 is not old. Rap is largely consumed by teenagers (unless you only listen to Scarface or DJ Quik or E-40), but I don't think all of it is for teenagers.

Still one of the year's best rap songs.

The new Schooldboy Q is really good, a pretty big improvement over Oxymoron

Coulda used a little editing but still really good.  Production is heat

Coulda used a lot of editing. I'm admittedly not a fan of these big bloated rap albums of recent (see: anything by Kanye, "To Pimp a Butterfly," etc.). Production is good, rapping is fine, but nothing really sticks after I run through it. The two tracks that caught my ear were "Ride Out" and "Dope Dealer," and I think only because of the guest verses by Vince Staples and E-40. Gonna give it another go but I don't think this one is for me.

Liked that Lil Yachty tape OK. Lil B vibes, which is not at all a bad thing.

New Kodak Black mixtape rules. YG's album is quickly becoming my favorite for the year.

Imperial kinda seems like Curry's testing the mainstream waters. Good for him if it works out, but there are some really bland tracks on there. Can't fault "ULT," but, yeah, he's not even close to "Lord Vader Kush" or "Void" on 32 Zel.

Will check out Blank Face this weekend - thanks for the tip.

Les Rallizes Denudes, France Demo Tapes LP - this year's reissue. They did a nice job and it all sounds great, despite cramming 28 minutes on side A. Wasn't privy to these recordings before but this kinda seems like the Denudes record to own. Redefines "slow burn."

Exhaustion/Wanders, II LP - second installment of the collaboration between Exhaustion and Kris Wanders. The first one meandered and this one is in attack mode. Thought I knew what I was getting into but I've been stuck on this one, big time. B-side is ruthless. Thunderstorm music.

Sir Richard Bishop, Salvador Kali 2xLP - reissue from Exiled, who put out that Lavender Flu record this year. Quality control is high there. I don't go for solo guitar records too often, but if I do, I want Rick at the helm. I'm glad they gave "Al-Darazi" its own side.

Lots of UGK in the car, along with YG's Still Brazy, which gets better with every listen.

Also, this Black Hippy remix of "THat Part", which features a mention of Alton Sterling.  That didn't take much time!
https://soundcloud.com/topdawgent/that-part-black-hippy-remix-1

I do wish Black Hippy would do more together, though.

This song is really good. Oxymoron was pretty damn good but Habits & Contradictions was/is a really special rap album to me. Will hesitantly check out the new one by Q.

fuck relsitened to Denzel Curry "32 zel..." today at work....that shit is hard.....fucking amalgamation of Outkast/Houston/Memphis and none of those at all at the same time....dude seems to be well versed in history and moving into the future as well.

That one is really good. He put out Imperial this year, and it's got some tracks, but it's not nearly as cohesive as 32 Zel/Planet Shrooms: http://www.datpiff.com/Denzel-Curry-Imperial-mixtape.771698.html

I am also on Team Awful. I like almost everything they put out.
