Bloated? I dunno, I see hip hop as more than the McDonalds happy meal music I guess. Stuff like Kodac Black and Young Thug just suck. Everything doesn't have to be a grand production or super lyrical but a lot of the newer kiddie stuff that ppl(especially white ppl) flip over just isnt good. It's not memorable at all, dudes aren't even speaking English. The whole trap style is played out. I appreciate minimalism but a lot of the production is so spare.....it's like watching white paint dry on a wall. I get the fact that everyone doesn't want to hear jazz trumpet or a million layered samples but damn...I swear it's like they do a raffle and pick a random dude off the street, give him some random Metro copycat beats and try to build the next trap star. Then again, I'm 34 and that stuff is meant for teenagers
I'll stick with Ferg and the Awful Records roster if I wanna hear some trap related stuff.
I just don't get the appeal. It's not even catchy. Hell I can get into some Rich Homie or Trinidad, I like ignorant shit too but at least those dudes are making catchy disposable music with some hooks not just mumbling and squeaks and squawks over a boring basic ass trap beat
Can't stand the "Can't understand what he's saying!" business. It's a convenient and ultimately silly argument against rap.
Overproduced is kinda what I mean by "bloated." It's sorta interesting that rap is reaching out into other genres, but longer tracks/guitar or horn solos/whatever does not guarantee a superior end product. I blame Kanye for that (yeah, put Bon Iver on that song, that'll sound good!). I like Q, which is why I'm frustrated with this record; I just think he gets lost on
Blank Face trying to be something he's not (that something = Kendrick). It's really hard to make a rap song interesting for 7 minutes (let alone an album for 60+ minutes) and not a lot of people can pull it off. Most rappers don't.
I think, if I were to define the McDonald's Happy Meal of Rap, it would be more like Travis Scott or Wiz Khalifa. The other trap stuff that soars to popularity overnight is kinda like the White Castle of Rap (looking at you, O.T. Genasis) - it's disposable and it's fun (sometimes) and it's not really trying to be anything else. But, I wouldn't go as far as dismissing everything that garners a tiny bit of praise. I think rappers like Kodak Black and Young Thug are good/great because they are so honest - a lot of times it sounds like these guys are rapping for their lives, and close listening to the lyrics reveals something a lot more engaging than bars about cars, jewelry, drugs, guns, etc. It's true that each has some "trap" songs in their ouevre, but these aren't the memorable ones. Shit, I wouldn't even argue that 50% of their output is good (a statistic not unusual for any artist in any genre).
In short: 34 is not old. Rap is largely consumed by teenagers (unless you only listen to Scarface or DJ Quik or E-40), but I don't think all of it is
for teenagers.
