Music Shit / Re: Rap / Hip-Hop 2016

Still need to check out that Lil Yachty tape. Thanks for the reminder.

I have spent most of 2016 listening to Boosie Badazz in terms of rap. He's dropped 5 albums so far, all good-to-great. These three I can safely recommend:
In My Feelings (Goin' Through It): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o51wUEJuinY
Out My Feelings (In My Past) (just skip "The Truth" on this one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-E7dWdCN6A
Penitentiary Chances (with C-Murder): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGbkKvX9LQc

Bentley's Street Knowledge with Parallel Thought is great (pay-what-you-want download): https://parallelthought1.bandcamp.com/album/street-knowledge

Have not listened to this yet, but there's a new Kodak Black mixtape that I have high hopes for: http://www.datpiff.com/Kodak-Black-Lil-BIG-Pac-mixtape.787992.html

I like Still Brazy by YG a lot, too.

Great show in Knoxville last night. Delivered on all fronts. Go if you're on the fence.

Related to above via show business, In School's new shite also tops + step above 7" #1.

Agreed, bests all 7"s I've heard this year so far. That new Barcelona 7" is up there, though.

Terry, Talk About Terry and 8 Girls 7"s - Still prefer Talk About Terry on the whole but "8 Girls" is definitely their best song yet. Sunny and sharp. Looking forward to the LP this summer.

Parquet Courts, Human Performance stream - Haven't purchased this one just yet, but it's been sneaking up on me lately. Have not checked in with the band since Light Up Gold and the amount of times I've played this new one has me thinking that maybe I oughta. Lots more restraint here than Light Up Gold and loads more variety. Some truly great guitar playing at points. "Captive of the Sun" reminds me of Cake but overall highly enjoyable - first three tracks are especially potent.

Black Sabbath, Vol. 4 LP - Found a nice clean used copy of this for cheap. Works well with the oppressive heat (for now).

Andy Stott, Too Many Voices 2xLP - I can't tell if I actually like this record or just the presentation of this record. Either way, been pulling it out a bunch. Pretty spare and chock full of kitschy pre-programmed noises, occasionally coalescing into something transcendent ("Butterflies," "Too Many Voices") but largely shuffling around and creating interesting textures.

Pretty much everything Paradise Daily has been putting out to get my Australian underground fix: https://paradisedaily.bandcamp.com/
I recommend Dry Finish, Sex Tourists, the Rangoons and Seating Plan especially.

Drose, boy man machine LP - Best LP of the year so far for me. Dark, industrial, plodding, intense. Kinda "metal" but with a sense of restraint often eschewed in the genre. Unnerving. Listen: https://droseohio.bandcamp.com/

Been listening to the self-titled album by Wilderness lately. Mid-aughts Jagjaguar band that sounds like a more melodic version of Lungfish.

Very highly rated record in my book. I even have a soft spot for Vessel States, too.

I had the chance to see Anthony Braxton twice over the weekend at Knoxville's Big Ears Festival. Both shows were head and shoulders above everything else I saw. I don't go for CDs much (which I'm starting to reconsider) but I grabbed his new 3 Compositions (EEMHM) 2011 3xCD and it smokes. It's Braxton with a cast of musicians playing atop iPods loaded with various points in Braxton's discography. Probably the closest thing to my memory of his 10+1Tet performance that I saw. Stream all three hours of it here: http://firehouse12records.com/album/3-compositions-eemhm-2011

Also, recommendations for Braxton's stuff are welcome. I've had For Alto for ages but now I'm ready to take the deep dive.

In rotation the past few weeks:
The Lavender Flu, Heavy Air 2xLP - But everyone has this by now, right?

The Pheromoans, I'm On Nights LP - Never was big on this band (never really tried, either), but this one is reminiscent of that great Bomber Jackets LP from a few years back. Getting a lot more play than anticipated.

Boosie Badazz, Out My Feelings (In My Past) - The mixtape to beat this year so far.

Various UGK cuts/Pimp C produced songs because it's warm and sunny in the south.

If that's June 1st and not January 1st... I might have to take a road trip. Stacked bill. Really into the Heron Oblivion record, and Forsyth & co. are always worth seeing.

^ Agree with lots of the above, but would choose Courtesy and Good Will Toward Men over My Love Is Higher...

x___x was not that good in Knoxville. Buncha guys reading lyrics from notebooks, standing completely still and playing the hits at 80% of the normal speed. Bim looked like he was gonna fall asleep several times behind the skins; I felt the same way most of the set.

Obnox's set more than made up for it. I don't remember the drummer's name that he's touring with, but they were a fierce duo.

Don't know why I never copped these. I figure maybe someone's sitting on some distro copies or could do without 'em. Anyway, looking for:

Loneliness Is a Dirty Mattress LP
Bitter Defeat/Down 7"

Get in touch if you've got a lead. Thanks.

Music Shit / Re: 2015; 6 months gone already, what's been good?

Is there someone "cool" in Tenement that's making everyone like them? Or some sort of association? Because that band sounds like Hot Water Music or something equally as offensive. Somebody please explain this to me.

I don't understand the phenomena either.

On track:
Russell St. Bombings, s/t
Future, 56 Nights mixtape
Bell Witch, Four Phantoms
Obnox, Know America
Quttinirpaaq, Dead September
Aye Aye, s/t
Constant Mongrel, DCM 7"
Blaxxx, For No Apparent Reason 12"

I bought a ticket to see them about a month ago, didn't realize 'til recently that they're not coming. Maybe next time.

Thanks for all your hard work in bringing these titles in, Bruce. Definitely appreciated here.
