I got a pair of the Monitor Audio BX2s almost a year ago, I've been really happy with them: http://www.monitoraudiousa.com/products/bronze-bx/bx2/

I hear ya. I still think Tenney Park area is nice, and if you can afford it the Willy St. area is quite nice too. It can get pricey because it's right along Lake Monona. Near west, like the Vilas neighborhood, is really nice too, though it can be a pain on Wisconsin football game days. But if you live far enough away from Camp Randall I imagine it's no problem. Also you can rent out your driveway for $25/car and make a couple hundred on game days, too.

Thanks man!  Is the near eastside like Tenney Park?  Any areas to stay away from living?  I was hoping the university brought in some diversity.  That's a bummer.

Yeah, near Tenney Park is good. That's where I lived for most of my time here. Anywhere on the isthmus is alright, really. I would avoid living on campus (obviously) and State Street, personally. Far east/far west are probably no good either. Is this for school, or work, or what?

when i went to school there, there was an embarrassing moment where they superimposed a black kid's face onto the cover of the welcoming pamphlet, or whatever. a sea of white football fans with an awkwardly placed black face photoshopped in. trying to show diversity, major backfire. funniest part was the student they stuck in there was kind of a nerd and said he would never attend a football game. think it was even covered on Daily Show. good stuff.

Ugh, yeah: http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2009/09/02/doctoring-diversity-race-and-photoshop/

If you mean Wisconsin, I can help. I'll actually be leaving this fall but I've lived here for 5 years now.

It's a very, very white city with lots of great restaurants and lots of live music. Now, as to whether you'll be interested in the shows is up to your personal taste. Tone Madison is the spot to check for events, that should give you a taste: http://www.tonemadison.com/

It's getting a little expensive to live downtown/near east side but those are the best spots. If you live west of downtown it's a lot cheaper but there's nothing going on.

Happy to help with any other questions you might have.

The Fieldhands are such a weird band. Like you said on paper it seems like it would be terrible but their discography is surprisingly solid. Plenty of songs I don't care for but not sure they ever cut a bad record. I like Discus as much or more than Wattle & Daub and the early SB singles and "In the Pineys" 10" are highly recommended if you dig those.

Feel 'ya on Letha's latest as well. She just kept getting better w/ each new release...

Late on this, but thanks for the Fieldhands recommendations. And yeah, I didn't expect to like Shimmering Ghost more than Handbook for Mortals but I'm pretty sure I do.

Aye Aye, s/t LP - Really into this record. Instrumental slow burn, smoke pouring out of the speakers, rising up and eventually clouding the room. I was worried about the inclusion of harmonica (or "harp," as it says on the back cover), but the wheezing, long, sorta-mournful accents atop the twin guitars works great. More reminiscent of Earth than any of the other bands Aye Aye's members perform in. All-around tops. That being said: the resemblance of the guitar riff in "Devils" to that in Everlast's "What It's Like" is uncanny.

TRTRKMMR, Avec La Souillure Nous Entrons Au Règne De La Terreur LP - I bought this because I remembered liking the TRTRKMMR split LP with Dead Times. Perfectly serviceable power electronics, blackened noise, what-have-you, with percussion allegedly created through the use of sampling damaged records. I don't feel much other than annoyed and kinda embarrassed when listening to this. Nice packaging though.

The Isley Brothers, Givin' It Back via YouTube - Obnox played here a few weeks back, and a local arts website interviewed him prior to the show. He mentioned the Isley Brothers' cover of Neil Young's "Ohio" (smashed together with a cover of Hendrix's "Machine Gun") and I've been hooked ever since: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDTgHRVgvU0

Zebra Hunt, City Sighs LP - I can't believe how many times I've played this thing. Lots of the Clean-influenced strummy guitar from this Seattle trio. There are some really embarrassing lyrics in the first few tracks, some annoying "la-la-la" parts, but I keep persevering through it all, because the last two tracks are a big payoff. The slower tracks like "Memphis" and "Isle of Songs" are also high points for me. Maybe the sun coming out again has got me soft, but there's no denying the teased-out riff during the coda in "Haze of Youth."

Ran through the new Kendrick Lamar album once quick, liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I'll probably shell out the $15 (!) on iTunes to get it so I can digest properly. Squeezing in a few tracks from last year's Rich Gang mixtape (which has really grown on me) every now and then, too.

Strapping Fieldhands, Wattle & Daub LP - Very glad for the inexplicable inspiration to pull this out. Never really clicked before but now I've played it several times over the past two days. Good mix of indie rock from that period, scattered experiments, some Brit pop, some whimsy (oh the whimsy), this mess somehow coming together in a coherent way that bands like the Olivia Tremor Control could only dream of. I only have this and the latest 7" on Richie so I've got some backtracking to do.

Letha Rodman Melchior, Shimmering Ghost LP - Her last one really hit me in the chest, but I think that had a lot to do with going in with zero expectations and hearing this playful, mournful, transportive memory device. This new one's hard to separate from her passing for a lot of reasons, and musically it comes across as a lot more somber and dark to me. Harp flutters in and out of these low droney affairs, mumbled passages wrapped in static or lost in the fog, all of it giving the idea of living with restricted access to the outside world. A slow separation. It's a heavy affair but it's also been great company on late nights when the outside traffic dies down.

Liturgy, The Ark Work - Total fucking clusterfuck that I can't stop listening to. If more people had a chance to ignore the press release and any interviews with Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, I think this would be a lot easier to swallow for the metal community. But the internet being what it is, hardly anyone will be able to listen to this without some bias, myself included. It took a few listens and now it's really coming together for me. There's a lot to digest as it's instrumentally dense like latter-day Swans, but it's fluid and it swells and breaks apart, and really goes by fast for being an hour-long record. Not a huge fan of the vocal style - a friend made the point that he should be singing from his throat, not his nose - but it's a small contention, as the vocals are usually chanted in a way that makes them blend in over time. And Greg Fox is still one of the best drummers in the game.

Still regularly listening to Starlito, Fried Turkey is a pretty great mixtape of his. New Freddie Gibbs EP was kinda disappointing after a few listens.

Gotta grab that Brando's Island 7" from Bruce, that fucking "You don't have to get, out of your SEAT" line has been stuck in my head for days: https://soundcloud.com/million-dollar-records/brandos-island-auto-warfare

Never thought I'd have the chance to see Low Life. Definitely going to the Madison show.

Mostly rap the last few weeks.
Recent mixtapes/albums by Starlito are all pretty great, especially Black Sheep Don't Grin. Dark rap, bordering on depression when Starlito is croaking out his verses in a stoned haze.
Boosie Bad Azz's Life After Deathrow caught me completely by surprise. It's tough to come out swingin' after being incarcerated (see: T.I., Gucci Mane, etc.) but Boosie sounds better than ever here.
The recent shooting death of the Jacka (R.I.P.) reaching headlines got me to finally check him out, both in extensive interviews and his records. What Happened to the World and his Highway Robbery collaboration with Freeway are both so damn good, this tense push-pull between his religious beliefs and the streets tempered by his sleepy, sing-songy delivery. Gotta start working backwards through his discography.
Shy Glizzy's Young Jefe isn't new, but it's new to me. Trap rap concerns are covered heavily but injected with a lot of consideration towards mortality - makes this one stand out. Gotta catch up on his LAW mixtape series.

Still playing that American Jobs LP nearly daily.
I have played Mordecai's Neil's Generator more in 2015 already than I played all of 2014. And I played it a lot last year.
Pura Manía 7"s that I missed from last year. Fucking awesome.
Frightening Lights LP is a woozy gem, just enough noise to keep Mazzy Star comparisons at bay.
This Aye Aye track have my hopes high for their self-titled LP out on March 17: https://soundcloud.com/testostertunes/aye-aye-remains/s-CaZUk
