Music Shit / Re: What music do you listen to when you get jaded with punk?
« on: November 10, 2015, 12:03:25 PM »
When I dropped out of things in the late 90's, I discovered soul/funk (especially Southern, more gritty stuff), hip-hop and even a smidgin of reggae, which i'd previously hated. Don't know the last time I listened to any of that stuff since I regained my love for punk in 2001 or so.

In the past few days I've been rediscovering some of the "noise rock" that I got quite into back in the day. I'll also throw on some stuff like Seam or Versus. "Pretty" music, but still with an edge. I guess I just like guitars.

Heresy/Concrete Sox
Oh, wait...they're both shit.
Agree about Faith, terrible band. The Untouchables tracks on Flex are classic though.
Insane/Septix, the Septix are crap

Septix are so crap you can't even remember their actual name, The Skeptix :)

I know it's hip to always big-up the Void side of the split, but I really like the Faith side. Just good, solid hardcore. Love the"Subject..." 12", too.

I used to quite like the Heresy side of the split, though it was a bit metally. The Concrete Sox side sucks, I agree.

Career Suicide/Jed Whitey - Jed Shitey, more like.
Heimat Los/Kromozom 4 - K4 are annoying as hell what with all their "comedy" skits while Heimat Los rage away.
Most of the splits Seein' Red did were with vastly inferior bands.

Music Shit / One-sided split records
« on: October 17, 2015, 04:23:34 PM »
What I mean is split records where you only really listen to one side and ignore the other, or certainly don't play it as often.

One that immediately springs to mind is the Larm/Stanx LP. Just can't bring myself to listen to Stanx.
Inferno/Execute - LOVE the Inferno stuff and was never mad on the Execute stuff, but can listen to it more now.
Los Crudos/Spitboy - the Spitboy side is absolute garbage and the epitome of that 90's PC/Heart Attack dirge masquerading as hardcore.

Any others?

Must be time for a new Gauze lp.

It's been, what, 8 years or so? I think you're right.
They're the only band I can think of who have improved with each lp.

Had the honour of seeing them live with Chaos UK in about 1990. My mind was blown, as you could guess.

This may be the most non-sexually jealous I've felt since I learned that my childhood friend was on Global Guts

Yeah, it was pretty orgasmic. It was at the 1-In-12 Club in Bradford when I was down there visiting my friend who'd introduced me to hardcore when we were at school a few years previously. An abiding memory was the Gauze bass player (Shin?) bulldozing through the crowd at the end of their set to get onto the stairway as he was so fucked from the heat and intensity of their set.

The new Gas Chamber ep sounds like mid 90's French emo like Fingerprint or something, weird.

I think the only mid-90's emocore that's pretty much stood up is Assfactor 4, if you could call them that. There was an absolute glut of stuff like Fingerprint and Anomie then. Hardcore was pretty much a busted flush at that point - minus the odd band -  until the Y2K thrash stuff pumped some life back into it. Certainly got me interested in hardcore again after dropping out of things in the mid/late 90's.

Saw NMN maybe in 1994 or so. Thought they were boring. They always struck me as a band for people who were moving on beyond hardcore, or certainly the people I knew at the gig. They just seemed like too much hardwork. Either that or I'm basically pretty narrow-minded, musically.

Far as I'm concerned, a modern major pop song about rehab sang by someone like that is pretty special. I just don't wanna hear it ever again.

that pop record was not at all representative of her actual style, or talent, really.

Ditto.

Before switching to the 60s style pop that made her famous she was singing in a jazz style.
Regardless of the style tho, her voice was phenomenal at every stage of her tragically short life.

4 minutes in here is where to hear her unfold - startlingly intense. (In her pre-commercial success days)

Funnily enough, I was thinking of that performance when she got mentioned in this thread. Although it's not my normal kind of music, you could tell she was very talented and actually a pretty girl, before it all went tits up. I'm sure that had she not crossed over into commercial success, she would still be with us now.

OK, not a record, but as a 15 year old I watched "The Great Rock & Roll Swindle" late one Friday night on my little black & white portable TV in 1985. Blew me away and I knew that punk was what I was missing in my life. Not too much of a push to say that it changed my life (for the better) and here I am 30 years later.

Seeing the Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle on my little black and white portable TV in 1985 when I was 15. Made me realise there was something missing in my life, and that something was punk rock! Haven't looked back since.

On the skate vid topic, Chris Senn's part in Jump Off a Building was almost my skateboard equivalent to the Sex Pistols, except that I was SOLD on punk rock, interest in skateboards didn't last.

Ha ha! Just shows you how old I'm getting. My memory is shot to fuck!

Paco's got the new, upcoming La Misma LP up on the LVEUM Bandcamp page.  Sounds really good.  Less bouncy than the 7" and demos, and maybe not even hardcore anymore (depending on how pedantic you want to be), rather focusing more on melody, especially in the guitar work.

Unintentional post-punk record of the year. Such a big evolution from the early stuff. Toxic State copies should be ready in two weeks!
Got record of the week in Spin(!) Really looking forward to seeing them a week on Saturday before they support Taylor Swift!

Really looking forward to the Blood Pressure 12" that's coming out on Beach Impediment. The promo tracks were awesome.

YDI - white rabbit

Love YDI, but never heard this and can't find it anywhere.  Was it ever recorded?

PTL Klub did a great version of this.
