I guess I just dont get the DOH hype.  Pretty bland records and looks like you guys just love watching a naked dude with weird shit on his dick and balls.  Seems like a shtick to me but whatever carry on....

edit: The spray painting at the MOMA show was kinda cool I guess.

Saw them a month or two ago and, although they were entertaining to watch, I just thought they were a mess, musically. On record? Don't like them at all. I guess I just like my hardcore to be more straightforward.

Music Shit / Re: What did Metal ever do for Punk?
« on: July 10, 2015, 01:13:36 PM »
Ha! Me and Mr. Termight got into a bit of trouble on another forum for a similar thread a while back. The metalheads got pretty precious and irate that we had a go at the terrible influence metal had on some great hardcore bands...I tried to get into metal when I was introduced to hardcore punk back in the mid-80's (having liked the 70's  punk classics previously) by a former metalhead. Couldn't get into it, though. Tried Death, Repulsion, Terrorizer and all that crap, but, nah, wasn't for me.

Got a friend that doesn't even bother with vinyl in thrift stores anymore, heads straight for the t-shirt rack. You can pay your rent with fucking metal tees in the Midwest.

Yep, I know more than one person who makes a good chunk of rent on metal t-shirts in the area. One (Brett) used to post here.
There was a MRR columnist a few years who used to describe in detail his thrift store shirt finds, same guy who did the vinyl column maybe? I've got a NOFX shirt from '91 I guess that's worth a flip.
Yeah, Graham Booth I think it was.
Yeah, that's him. His column was the highlight of most issues. My MRR sub ran out over 2 years ago.
Still got to get my monthly fix! Some of the columnists are brutal, though. The Hungarian dude (Viktor Vargyai) and Imogen Binnie are particularly bad. I attempt to read their stuff every month and end up giving up.

I like the new Boston Strangler LP! The first was great and this one might not get the kudos that the first one did, but it's still some good hardcore.

I can't get my head around all this "zanycore" stuff, much the same as the Toxic State stuff like Hank Wood, Crazy Spirit and Dawn Of Humans. I appreciate people might want to fuck with the formula a bit, but my neanderthal need for straight-forward trad hardcore overrides any compulsion to "branch out". Having said that, I'll go see DoH when they play here in June. Might be a different prospect live, but on record they leave me cold.
I reckon the last 5 years or so have produced some of the best trad hc since '84; Kremlin, Green Beret, Ecoli, Blank Stare, Career Suicide. I'll be the first to say I'm pretty disappointed with the DOH lp but the Toxic State eps are top draw.

Oh yeah, there's been some awesome tradcore (!) in recent years, no doubt. I guess I'm just trying to say that the ones who fuck with the formula just leave me a bit cold. You just know that MRR will be raving about the DoH LP.

Music Shit / Re: Bombshell LP Allied Recordings

The Sparkmarker track on that cd is really good too. I sent dollars through the post (an expensive hassle in '95) to get their cd and it was crap, nothing like that track at all. I've just heard the Gus lp that's not bad. I guess the fact that nobody has upped the Bombshell lp to soulseek, mediafire, youtube or anywhere else speaks for itself.

I just checked Soulseek and found the Bombshell LP, if interested.

I thought the vast majority of the Allied stuff that I heard was pretty meh, even though I was going through a more melodic/less hardcore period round about then. Maybe I was just biased against anything to do with John Yates after he gave my fanzine a bit of a slagging when he reviewed it in MRR circa 1990! A lot of the stuff from then was veering away from hardcore to a more "emo"/indie rock sound or garage. I could appreciate some of it, but most of the stuff hasn't aged well. Not one of the better periods for punk.

I remember a bunch of us going round to a mate's flat every weekend, getting pissed and he would throw Ween on the CD player. All I can recall is "Piss Up A Rope" and me hating every second of it.

This is great. Featuring the most prolific drummer in hardcore.

Duly Noted! No bullshit hardcore, just the way I like it.

Music Shit / Re: Best & Worst Distros/Labels

Only fair to balance the neg with a pos; Paco at Lavidaesunmus remains a superb distro, fast and communicative with an excellent stock. I must use him a lot as I managed to spell the name without checking it.

Paco is a top dude. Been buying stuff from him for close to 15 years (pre-website) and he's went out of his way for me on a few occasions, too. Frightening to think how much money I've spent when buying vinyl from him over the years!
