Pop Punk / Re: Bad Religion invented modern punk rock
« on: September 25, 2016, 02:21:48 AM »
I'm on a nostalgic trip, but I really do wholeheartedly endorse No Control. It is soooo sick.

"You" is kind of a bullshit song, but the rest is pretty goddamn stellar. I have a plan in the back of my head to re-record the whole record as a 2016/7 punk record with appropriate vocals and production - it would absolutely be heralded in top 10s around the globe. The songs and riffs are all perfect - it's made not punk by graffin's delivery and the "pro" production that downplays how sick the guitar should sound. But like I said in another thread, it's exponentially the record Out of Step is, if it was a bit late.
Yeah, I've been ripping some of my BR records onto CDrs and onto my PC for my MP3 player. Don't care what anyone says, but BR up to No Control is great. Catchy songs, singalong tunes - what's not to like? Yeah, they got pretty slick from Against The Grain onwards, but they still had some cracking tunes, even their major label effort, Stranger Than Fiction.

I was curious if anyone else was nonplussed by all the mutant, kid core kinda style goin nowadays.  Stuff like Lumpy, mystic inane and all that.....a little too silly/zany/whatever

I get it, I like the Samoans too but enough's enough
Know what you mean. Just seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment. Not really interested in it and tend to stick to boring ol' straight-ahead hardcore.

im working on transcribing my second set of reviews. its a pretty painful exercise just listening in my head to how people described things 30 years ago, but im supportin' the cause.
Yeah, I've done a couple of issues but had to take a break as I was all reviewed out! It's actually quite a lot of hard work, especially mentally. Gonna go back for more punishment soon as I want to keep doing my bit. My issue were a bit more mid-90's when the amount of stuff reviewed got to ridiculous levels.

After that Lockjaw "Gang Violence" LP that's just been released and was wondering if any UK distros will be stocking it? On Antitodo Records.

His drumming on Career Suicide's "Attempted Suicide" is incredible. What a loss. RIP.

I must admit I'm looking forward to reading reviews of the stuff I was involved in that I haven't seen in more years than I care to remember. Also seeing stuff like Tim's review of the Die Kreuzen lp where he just wrote 'this is fucking great' like 15 times or so will be cool too.
What bands were you in, mate?

Yeah, the Die Kreuzen LP review is a classic.

MRR has always ruled, even the worst years were vital. It's 2016, and I'm sure there are a few goof-ass haters still out there, but fer the love of gawd nothing else compares.
Totally agree. Never understood the hate for what is obviously a labour of love for the people who run/shitwork the mag and all for no pay, too. It's done for the love of punk rock, nothing else. So glad that people took up the baton when Tim died as it was his baby, really. Still look forward every month to getting a new issue. Long may it reign!

Government Issue were one of the absolute greatest of the early '80s hardcore bands. All of their records sounded different from that one that proceeded it in their progression. Great guitar tone and these guys had the songs. Sad to hear that Stabb was sick with cancer (I only learned about this just several days ago) and succumbed at such a young age.
True dat. Tom Lyle's guitar tone was amazing, especially on GI5 when they started to get quite psychedelic (that sitar!) in places. Listening to "Joyride" at the moment, their supposed "metal" record. Haven't listened to them for a good few years, but I'm in the process of ripping all my GI stuff (a lot!) onto the computer and using a program to cut out all the gaps between tracks and let the good times flow. Perfect walking-to-work tunes.

Music Shit / John Stabb RIP

Sad to read this morning that John Stabb of Government Issue succumbed to stomach cancer. I absolutely adored this band, especially in the early 1990's when I could barely listen to anything else. All eras of the band were great to me but I had a particular fondness for the more hardcore stuff. Seemed like quite the character and had a wicked sense of humour, from all accounts. Wish I'd seen them live.

Whoa, BLACKBALL is pretty raging.

Agree. A stormer of a record. That "Black Meridian" track just kills. Hope somebody in the UK gets them in to flog.

New band from Malm?, Sweden singing in polish. Reminds me of early Disorder and even more so live.

Sounds cool but, if I may, I'm kinda getting sick of ultra-reverberated vocals. Maybe tone that down a bit, just a thought.

I agree, too. Can't we just have raging punk vocals without the effects?

TVEye77 and Kevin, please give it a fucking rest. It's beyond tedious now.

HOLY SHIT I'm listening to URANIUM CLUB's "Human Exploration" for the first time and I'm about to scream with excitement. What a record! Need to see these humans in the flesh! Top notch sleeve and insert too. The center labels thing is very funny and I can't decide if it's for real or on purpose.

Too late, one of the guys is moving to sf to coordinate mrr at the end of the month.  You all missed it!!!!

I still have a subscription to MRR and haven't missed an issue since the late 80s. I'm amazed but happy that it is still up and running, but that is largely due to the ladies that have kept it afloat in this day and age of the world wide web. Glad to see it continue. Tons of great stuff that you can discover through the magazine that doesn't have much of an internet presence.

The MRR haters are either living in a time warp or parroting played out slaggings that haven't been even remotely true for decades. If you like contemporary punk rock records you should check it out.

Glad they got someone to help co-ordinate the mag as I know they've been trying to get someone suitable for quite a while. Don't know if Grace is staying on or if the guy's taking over completely.

Still love my monthly fix of MRR. Yeah, it can be a frustrating read at times, especially some of the columnists, but it's still a crucial  read for me.
