just want to add to the vocoder ≠ autotune issue. I really wish people wouldn't use these words interchangeably. Vocoders are awesome and always sound great. They sound like sad robots, and they are timeless. They can also be used in totally awesome ways that don't have anything to do with robot voices. They're effects boxes where, simplified, one signal is matched to another. You can plug a guitar and a synth, or a synth and drum machine or whatever.

 Excessive use of autotune is the current fad and it sounds robotic because it automatically pitch shifts your voice to the "correct" note according to whatever scale/key you're supposed to be in.
