How about stores dealing direct with labels, to keep the price down. Great, when it happens. Before the econ tanked, I dealt direct with over 20 stores, 10 mail orders, and 3 distributors. After the crash, it went down to 5 stores, 3 mail orders, and 2 distros. About two years ago, it was down to 3 stores, 1 mail order, 2 distros, one who wasnt selling anything. Funny thing is that aside from a two year dip after the crash, my sales have been pretty much the same. I went exclusive with Revolver this year, which means no direct sales to stores or mail orders (I still do my own mail order)...and my sales have grown. Most stores prefer to buy from one or two distros rather than a whole bunch of labels.

I think that's what makes curated record stores like Permanent and Green Noise so great -- if you can nail down your niche market, you really can just buy from labels and keep your prices down.  Permanent has been stocking color runs of ITRs new releases presumably by buying direct and not through Revolver.  It seems like the smaller record stores that have no direction except make a shiny, boutique-looking record store with no apparent direction (and there have been PLENTY in LA) are just setting themselves up for failure.

Really interesting breakdown on the economics.  Definitely understand a lot more where labels are coming from.  I think if DC swallowed the arrogance (not the only way to market your product) and dropped a download card in their releases, I'd back them more.  I just want to see labels care about the people who are buying their product.  That's all.

I'll admit the quality of the presses isn't bad, and neither are the jackets, inserts, etc.  With that said, I'd be much more excited about buying a record from, say, Matador -- a comparably priced label with a step up in quality in all aspects of their bigger releases.

I've kind of been tuning out the whole Death revitalization, but I am blown away by how front and center it's been for a label that puts out new records.

I'm moreover bummed that it looks like its now Purling Hiss' home as well with a 3rd DC release coming this fall.  And then when I saw they were putting out a Running 7", I wondered what the hell was going on.  Anyone know what incentives they're giving all these bands to pull them over?

Curious to know others take on Drag City, because I feel like I can't possibly be the only one. Personally, as a buyer, I got problems with DC: Comparatively high prices, mediocre quality presses, no included downloads with high prices, obnoxious copy writing in newsletters and other releases, etc. just feels like maybe they didn't get the memo that the vinyl industry is a buyers market.

And no disrespect to those who work on the label. I'd wanna know if it was my label, and running any independent label these days is commendable. But I smell an air about DC and it isn't too welcoming, ya know?

That black and white watercolor portrait is fucking amazing.

Yeah, I wanted to hear some backstory as well.

Oh, I thought you meant me talking shit about W-Brains vocalist.

Both of the bands you mentioned are dull as hell, precisely in that 90s emo way. Japandroids are even worse because they try to play Flag covers and fail miserably. Cloud Nothings at least know their audience.
That's not fair, everyone who does Flag covers fails miserably. Especially that band...oooh, what's their name? Ah, that's right... Bl'ast.
Cloud Nothings only know their audience because it's made up entirely of their friends and family. I mean, who else would go?

Speaking of Flag covers.....this takes some beating

I was in the audience the other night at the Roxy.  For the record, there are a few tracks on that new Cloud Nothings album that are fucking ferocious.  Anyway, I was bummed to see them live -- they were really bad.  Homeboy looked like a fucking beer-bellied, down-and-out sweaty mess.  And THAT was depressing.

I gotta jump on that Wymyns Prison LP.  Keep hearing about it.

So... what about these days?

Bonus question:  What is Chris Gunn up to these days?

this sounds really good. probably the best i've heard from them. You can really hear that Matt Melt had something to do with it

I was weary of the compression it would endure in Melton's hands, but it's not overbearing. Still getting used to it, but I'm liking.

Man, that was great to see.  I loved that era and all the Bomb Hip Hop shit that was going on.  Thanks for sharing.

Yo, uhh... aside from dudes losing arms and shit (with all due respect), what's the ETA on this bad boy looking like?  I don't know if I can hold off the temptation to stream on Rdio for much longer.

I don't know about any PR stuff, but I am an undercover Alcoholic Beverage Control agent. I'm here to suss out any info on underage beer drinking parties and/or the underground moonshine trade in the mid-Atlantic tri-state area.

There's another good question -- how many regular users do you think are actually under 21?

The Low Life LP and the new Running single on God? Records.

How did you already snag a copy of that Running 7"?

Just got a copy of that new Mordecai LP.  So far liking the cleaned up sound, but not sure if that means I'll grow tired of it sooner.  We'll see.

Also, the Shirks' S/T album on Grave Mistake last year.
