Music Shit / Re: Were there any forward-thinking albums in 2015?
« on: November 28, 2015, 04:19:38 PM »
Speaking of electronic music, the new Oneohtrix Point Never album I thought was one of the really interesting records I heard this year. It could be that I'm lacking the proper reference points there, but I haven't heard anything that really sounds like it as a whole.

Also while I loved the LOTION lp, I have to say I don't think they're doing anything that original, they're just doing it better than anyone else.

Music Shit / Were there any forward-thinking albums in 2015?

So, just by the nature of finding music on the internet I tend to fall into genre holes, and most of what I've heard this year has felt a bit reheated. Not a bad thing, some formulas absolutely don't need fucking with, but I'm curious what you guys think has been looking to the future in 2015? Any style of music, as long as it was something you enjoyed recently

Spaceshits, Misbehavin'.  On YouTube.  I bought this on CD the week it came out.  Didn't have the foresight to buy it on LP. (Did have the guff to buy many of their other releases on vinyl at the time.) Too expensive on veenulz now.  "We Know Where the Girls Are" is one of the best songs of the era/genre.

Bukka White. A few diff collections on LP.  Some vids, too.  It's all stunning, but if you're impatient, start five minutes in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ptrcBDeiLk

Arthur Blythe, Bush Baby LP.  Disjointed but somehow fluid.

VU, Sweet Sister Ray 2xLP.  The boot from a couple-few years ago.  Mostly unnecessary with some brilliant flashes.  Still waiting for the bootleg of them doing "Happy Birthday," "Auld Lang Syne," "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," "Hava Nagila" and "Louie, Louie."  I will sell this to you for less than anyone else will.  Same with the similarly unnecessary La Monte Young thing that came out around the same time.  C'mon, admit this shit is stupid.  Or admit you're stupid.  I'm fine either way.

Cindytalk, In This World LP.  Hadn't heard it in about five years.  Sounds like the soundtrack to a particularly grating indie film.  I like it a lot.
I am stupid, and I also need a copy of Sweet Sister Ray and whatever La Monte young thingy you have

- Robert FRIPP & Brian ENO "Evening Star" (LP. 1975) [UK]
- Ry COODER "Paris, Texas" (LP. 1985) [US]
- Lizzy MERCIER DESCLOUX "Press Color" (LP. 1979) [FR/US]
- ROSA YEMEN "Rosa Yemen feat. Lizzy Mercier Descloux" (12". 1979) [FR/US]
- Imrat KHAN "Raga Malkuns" (LP. 1975) [IND]
- The WIND HARP "Song from the Hill" (2xLP. 1972) [US]
- Ariel KALMA "An evolutionary Music (original Recordings: 1972 - 1979)" (2xLP. 2014 / rec. 1972-79) [FR]
- Pat PATRICK & The BARITONE RETINUE "Sound Advice" (LP. 2015 / rec. 1977?) [US]
- Pekka AIRAKSINEN "Buddhas of golden Light" (LP. 2015 / rec. 1984?) [FIN]

God I love Press Color. Not even particularly impressive songs but she just has so much charm it carries the whole album. Finding out she and Richard Hell were an item makes so much sense

How has there never been a decent Velvets documentary? We got one about fucking Jandek for christ's sake!

I don't hate the Chron Gen version either, it's nice and fast, reminds me of the Bowie and Velvets covers that Eater did. Not great, just fun

Music Shit / Re: nerdy pressing details thread

Anybody know of a '77 (or any) pressing of Young Loud and Snotty that came with an insert? My copy has none, only one I see on discogs is the Japan pressing but it seems fishy to only give a lyric sheet the Japanese...

What do we even mean by confrontational bands? I always thought the antagonizing the audience shit was extremely lame. Like sure it looks cool in some grainy video of sakevi shooting a flamethrower or whatever but  why would this something to even look for in a group?

Are these out yet or nah

Anybody mentioned how fucking good the L.O.T.I.O.N. LP is? Outstanding packaging even for Toxic State standards, and just a killer god damn record. Maybe it's just that nobody else is doing this sound right now but it sounds really fresh to me, good track sequencing, production is perfect for this sound, lyrics are direct enough to not be cliche but broad enough to not be cringey.

Music Shit / Re: jazz jizz

Is this a safe space to ask for recommendations? A lot of the classic stuff (early to mid-period Coltrane/Davis etc.) sounds a little too perfect for me, but a lot of free jazz is just TOO loose and disjointed for me to enjoy over a whole album. I love Ayler's playing, but find myself wishing the arrangements had more structure.

Last night I put on an Archie Shepp record (On This Night) and was really struck by the kind of controlled fury in his playing. Can somebody suggest something where this sort of passion is evident without sounding schizophrenic? Something maybe slightly less polished but still approachable? Or even where to go next with Shepp? I really feel in my heart that I could get much deeper into jazz, I just need a little direction here
