Music Shit / 'Sheen of Gold' documentary about the Skeptics now online
« on: December 11, 2020, 04:46:32 PM »
One of the best documentaries about any NZ band is now online. Check out 'Sheen of Gold', about one of Flying Nun's most underrated yet locally cherished bands:

Surprised this hasn't turned up on here, unless I've missed it:

https://www.analogplanet.com/content/major-vinyl-production-catastrophe-apollotransco-lacquers-burns

TLDR: The plant that supplies the world's cutting engineers with lacquers -- that is, aside from Japan's MDC, who are undersized and not taking new customers -- burned to the ground last week.

I work at a pressing plant but haven't heard anything yet from my bosses about this; anyone on here have any inside info? Are the doomsday headlines overblown? If not, it sounds like it'll impact the entire vinyl industry right down to the consumer.

Christchurch's CHEAP THRILLS music zine: 142 pages of top-quality reflections on modern weirdo NZ music culture.

In my experience of sifting through tree matter, this is the best example of how to get it right. No wasted paper here, folks: everything you need to know about where NZ underground/punk/etc is at right now. (And a little bit of the old stuff.)

≈ key features:

-Intimate thoughts on PETER GUTTERIDGE's inner workings
-OPPOSITE SEX talk about their new album 'Hamlet'
-KRAUS in Europe
-My very own GIRLS PISSING ON GIRLS PISSING writeup
-The ANTIPODEAN GOTHIC: Jasmine Gallagher connects the dots that make up NZ's current wave of miserable darkness
-On SALAD BOYS' joe sampson and his billion other bands
-And 19 more cleverly-crafted articles, interviews, and artwork that finally give due credit to the stuff you won't hear NZ On Air or VNZMA or Universal Music bragging about.

Whether you're in an NZ band or an american band trying to sound like an NZ band, any and all people curious about where new zealand underground music is at should buy this, and fast, cos these hotcakes are selling like babies!

Copies are $20 each (nz) / $30 (international). Hit me up at michaelm2391@gmail.com or on here.

Music Shit / What music do you listen to when you get jaded with punk?
« on: November 09, 2015, 04:41:04 PM »
Greetings, fellow white middle-class authenticity-seekers!

Like most Boys With Something To Prove In Ways Other Than With Their Disposable Income, thoughts like the above bum me in relation to the fallacies, contradictions and dogma within the 'punk' category, and whatever that word even means anymore. For that reason, I've been digging into other stuff lately. So far I've dug weirdo euro-synth, dumb disco, goofy rap and stuff the body responds to better than the mind.

One very hilariously commercial example comes in the way of Candy Girl by New Edition:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAFg2TQk9v0

Self (and else) deprecation aside, I'm sure plenty of you 'get' being jaded by the hypocrisies and contradictions within a genre that should really be taken a lot less cartoonishly than it usually is. So how about it, any other hits n' smashes that tick boxes that the usual punk stereotype simply can't? I'm looking for recommendations.

I've been trying to get a ticket to this damn thing for months... first marred by my own unstable income while on tour, now marred by tickets selling out weeks ahead of the shows, wildly unforeseen by my inept former self. Now, the event page is literally littered with punk kids (and grown-ups like, ahem, myself) trying to score last minute tickets.

Should I grow a mullet and attempt to blend in with the crowd? Should I be in several famous bands? Should I milk any and all exotic charm so reliably proven to be lapped up by American fans with full-time jobs? Such is the Melbourne way, it seems, but none feel a right guarantee for this unwelcomed NZer. Despo times call for despo measures, so I must resort to threats:

Who is the real winner here? The real winner is aptly-named punk festivals. If my weekend continues en route, I'll be exemplifying just what festival names like Maggot Fest and Berserktown say punk is all about: Chilling out and having many showers.

Oh, and Noisey. (not bitter. i just burn bridges for fun!)

All Babies Are Selfish Cowards: A pamphlet by Michael McClelland

Everyone knows that all babies are spineless bludgers who take advantage of all our hard work for their own corrupt, selfish benefit.

What perhaps many do not realise are the extent to which these babies and their greedy ulterior motives are tearing apart the social fabric of our world.

For far too long, these lazy babies have been coasting on by, their every whim pandered to as a privileged minority. It's time we said NO. These babies need to learn the virtue of hard work.

Simply put, these babies must be stopped.

This informative document explores the Baby Agenda in detail and proposes solutions to curbing this alarming trend.

How did these babies come about? Where do they come from? And why should WE give them a free ride? These questions and more will be addressed.

Babies are to be feared and closely watched, lest they may rebel.

Foreword by John D. Morton (Electric Eels, X__X).

Sigh, here goes. I was gearing up to book/tour manage a full US tour for a New Zealand band in September, and they just bailed on me. Decided they wanna do it by themselves. Now I'm 3-4 months out and would usually start booking right now, not to mention already have purchased my flights. Shit's fucked.

Anyone want an NZ tour booker/manager/roadie/driver in exchange for a way for me to get around the country? I've got 2 full US tours experience, many more in NZ. Worked with small and big bands. I got buddies I wanna catch up with. Couple people on this forum can vouch for me I'm sure/hope. Can tell you about all the good NZ things.

I think I'll hit up Berserktown and/or Gonerfest, so bands travelling to those things might be interested.

Alternatively, fuck, play in one of my bands and we'll do it that way.

Here are my bands, they can help you gauge my taste:

Team Ugly toured the US in 2012 and I TMed for Civil Union last year if you saw em:

Hello! Usually I post about NZ bands that are on the Melted Ice Cream label, but as soon as I caught wind of new releases by Girls Pissing On Girls Pissing I took to the internet as soon as I had the chance. It's 2015, and the world must know that the trying-est band on this planet are MY FRIENDS. I would be a bad friend if I didn't somehow persuade you and all your friends to buy the shit out of my friends at once. That's just how this music industry works. And since nobody's paying me to say that, it either means they really are that great or I'm not getting paid enough.

GIRLS PISSING ON GIRLS PISSING RECENT RELEASES

Like all New Zealand success stories, this band is relatively unknown. Yet the waxy blah that has now been secreted from sheer lack of compromise finally certifies my opinion: this deserves the nerdiest of perusals. From Sharpie Crows (of Flying Nun, real obscure label y'know) came Enya fan Casey Latimer, who at said band's point of dissolution did ensemble his way into a more din-friendly sound: Steve Huf's staggering bass, Alex Brown's twisted clarinet and Aki Bukake's spirit-shriek all sit atop those hypnotic cycles that make Catherine Cumming one of the darndest drummers there is.

These are the nicest guys to ever scare you. The greatest team that ever played band-sports with their fingers. The best group ever hyperbole'd. As every rock-ad goes: Read the myth, purchase the music, hear the band! Buy! Buy! Buy!

Split w/ Looks Like Miaou 12" [Tendresse]
GPOGP doubled up with a Belgian band who by all meaningful accounts actually sound pretty similar to them. That's what splits usually do, I suppose, but we're talking about a particularly unconventional sound, as far as goth-twang goes. What's also nifty is that there's a reversible sleeve to make the package feel all that more tangible.
http://tendresserecords.bandcamp.com/album/girls-pissing-on-girls-pissing-looks-like-miaou

Nine Of Swords b/w Ng. 7" [Crane Fortune]
"Single sided 7" vinyl with re-mixed and mastered version of Nine of Swords from 2011 album Eeling. B-side has been made un-playable." Made possible thanks to a particularly warm Termbrother!
http://girlspissingongirlspissing.bandcamp.com/album/nine-of-swords-ng

Gotta catch 'em all, to quote a repressed memory.

GIRLS PISSING ON GIRLS PISSING NEWS

They have an album coming out soonish. I've heard the rough cut, and my ears are thanking me! They need a distro'er for the US, small run, sub-100 copies definitely... get at me on here and I'll put you in touch. Do it for the sleaziest sax solo there is. (And, in a rare moment of comprehensibility, I'll admit that it's the best local album I've heard in years and years. Fucking get in there before Captured Tracks does.)

If you missed it, and you probably didn't, I wrote this NZ 'scene report' on Termbo that included the 'Girls.

For live videos, there's plenty here.

Enjoy that dirge!
