This has replaced my #1 Question for Mitch Cardwell, which used to be:

"Where are my free records??"

I know what you mean about power pop/punk/garage bands here being hard to stomach - most are going for style over substance and pretty much all of them are a little too bubble gum and not enough hard drugs like we're used to in the USA.

It can't be easy - the poor dudes wanna be all "GG ARRIN!" but end up sounding like The Queers.

And about Japanese bands taking so long to do anything- Well have you noticed that most Japanese bands are fucking crap? Aside from the rare good ones, that is. And the good ones are REALLY REALLY good.
Most just emulate and over think and by the time they do anything it's trite and limp that it comes off as complete shit. But most Japanese people love dumb shit in general anyways...Well, most people in the world actually.

I mean, it's all a matter of opinion and what you're into, but I gotta disagree about most Japanese bands being crap.  The ones I see on a regular basis are really enjoyable and I dare say, "really really good."

I won't argue that a lot of them do emulate and over-emulate stuff, but sometimes in works in their favor when they beat the prototype they worked with into the ground and create a new standard for everyone else.

Bands I think that are still relevant and have a long history that are from Japan: Warhead, Nightmare, Tetsu Arei, etc etc - these guys have been going for a long time, gone through member changes, taken breaks, but have never stopped playing and started another band with a different name just doing the same type of music.  Commitment.

yeah beacuse Timmy is the below and believes it and uhh knows how to go to kinkos. I have never gone out with him and him not be flyer heavey. Maybe its me but I thought most of this was common sense now.

True, but isn't some of this based on where shows are done as well?  For example, maybe flyers are still the norm in Austin, while people in L.A. or NYC are much more used to receiving information online - as a result of this, promoters in those areas have decreased the production of flyers and increased their presence there...

There's as much to be said for someone aggressively promoting a show online or offline - I would argue that the medium is only as important as the area it's being disseminated in.  Although, I suppose there's always the chance you could attract a new customer from a well-designed flyer in a store or at a club...but the same could be said for someone who reads something on their friend's facebook wall and decides to give it a shot.

I think Timmy is a good example of how to be a great promoter.

Lots of sweeping generalizations follow:

In the USA, it seems pretty common for bands to start, practice about two months, play some shows and then have a 7" out on whatever label within four or five months (provided the person running the label is a friend, or you are an ex-member of a popular band from before)

In Japan, I've found it's common for anywhere from six months to one year of practicing before the first gig, and anywhere from two to five years before an actual release (aside from a demo) is put out.

What's it like in Europe?

If you ask me, the more relaxed schedule is better, because then you probably have less bands practicing, recording and then breaking up immediately after a record is out (never cool for a label person to deal with), then going on to start a new band.  Is it a lack of dedication in the USA or just a different cultural approach to doing things?

As in: it doesn't have to be perfect, just do it and when it stops being fun, don't wait it out, get done with it and start something else - as opposed to keeping a band name alive for many years, despite taking a year off here or there because somebody decides they don't have time for the band?

You do just press a button over and over after targetting things, but I wouldn't say it is that easy after level four or so...

At my JHS, the student population has dwindled from full to like 33% over the past week because after eight or nine students have the flu in one class, they just send everyone home to keep it from spreading.  So I have more time to sit online, which is cool.

Since I finally saw signs of life in the "garage/punk" scene here, I'm gonna try and interview one or two bands - X-DISCOS and FRANTIC STUFFS.
