Otherwise it'd probably be some rave or that Old Barn Fest where people stole and blew up a car and the cops came and were scared of all of us. I smoked a joint right in front of a cop silently daring him to say something and then find himself torn limb from limb by the three thousand train hopping crust punks that were there.
Actually, Old Barn Fest is one of the most important shows for me, too. Trekking across the country for the first time. In retrospect, our trip was so poorly planned it's funny, we had little money and no credit cards, no cell phones, etc etc but somehow pulled it off. Car broke down in DuBois, PA where I was threatened by a local for allegedly photographing their car as it drove by (they saw me push the button?). Broke down again in Indiana with what proved to be a cheap fix but caused a huge scare when we found our trunk on fire(!). We exhausted all of our cash to fix the car, made it to Old Barn, met up with friends, saw a million bands and some crusties burn a car, then headed home. It was great.

Cress "Monuments" LP
As I recall, I picked this up from the Tribal War Distro, helmed by Steve Distraught at the time, when Los Crudos played ABC No Rio on the "Canciones" tour. Also picked up the Charles Bronson 12" and aforementioned Crudos 12". I can't remember if I picked up Cress because I'd read an MRR review or if I just liked that the name was an allusion to Crass, but I fucking loved this record. Cress followed it up with a split w/ Doom, maybe some other records none of which moved me like this did. Diminishing returns. Somewhere along the line, I guess I decided that since I had all the peace punk records Cress were ripping off, it was time to get rid of it. I was surprised to find that Cress did a US tour this summer. I wasn't around or was at other shows when they were in NYC, and although I'm kind of curious about how they were, it's 17 years later...but, memories of the late '90s, I did download this LP, and finally gave it a spin this afternoon while out jogging. And, well, it's fucking great. Really. Holds up better than Conflict does. Smart peace punk, anthemic songs. Gotta find a copy for myself. Curious if I should bother with their other records that didn't get me the first time around. I'm older now.
Spot on about Cress. FYI, the split 10" with Doom is excellent. Definitely worth tracking down.
